~Chapter 18~
âAh!â
âWhy do you keep barging in when someoneâs eatingâŠ!â
Uncle stood up abruptly, looking genuinely annoyed.
Waitâhow could that thick, heavy door break apart like a piece of paper?
âWhere is she?!â
The voice roared like a wild beast.
âAn angry lion!â
Stepping over the broken door appeared an elderly man with a full head of white hair and eyes glowing cold blue. His huge mouth was open wide.
A wild beast had appeared!
âThe Grand Duke of Jebert!â
His huge body, towering height, thick and tough skin, and roughly swept-back white hairâhe radiated the presence of a mountain standing before me.
âSo he wasnât bedridden from illness at all?!â
How could someone âsickâ have such overwhelming energy?
âBring the new kid here!â
âSheâs right in front of you.â
ââŠ.â
The Grand Duke lowered his head, scanning the area, until his eyes met mineâstanding right next to Uncle.
Wow, that look. Not a joke.
If Uncle Leviathanâs aura was like a finely sharpened blade, the Grand Duke felt like a huge, heavy axe.
Either way, both were weaponsâŠ
ââŠ.â
ââŠUh, hello?â
I greeted him cautiously.
His gaze narrowed slightly, the corners of his eyes twitching, his lips slowly parting.
âWhatâs this⊠a little snot?â
âIâm not a snotâŠâ
âA talking snot!â
âMy name is Ruby⊠But did you just punch down the door with your fist?â
I couldnât help asking. Steam was rising from his knuckles.
So those loud noises earlierâwere they him breaking through the castleâs main door?
âHmph.â
Suddenly, the Grand Duke crouched down to my level and stared straight at me. After a moment, he reached a hand behind him.
âBring it here!â
âOh dear, Lord Balrog.â
A thin, bony man hurried inâhe looked like the Grand Dukeâs butler. He was holding a large board.
âPlease slow down a littleâŠâ
âGive it here!â
The board was marked with strange height measurements.
The Grand Duke snatched it and placed it right next to me.
âWhat are you doing?â
âHmm. Barely taller than a low-level beast.â
Did he just measure my height in beast standards?
I stood there speechless.
Before I could even argue, the Grand Duke crossed his arms and shouted,
âUnqualified!â
ââŠHuh?â
âSnot, youâre going straight back to the capital!â
âHey, Father, who saysââ
Unable to watch any longer, Uncle stepped in. Immediately, the Grand Dukeâs glare turned on him.
âYou rascal. I knew you were cold-blooded, but I didnât think you were rotten to the core!â
The Grand Duke stood up and pointed a finger at his son.
âHow could something this small ever hold a sword?â
âI-I can fightâŠâ
âI told you to bring a capable knight or soldier, and you bring a child? Did you forget thereâs a beast subjugation coming soon?â
His booming voice rang through the air.
Without thinking, I slipped behind Uncle and gripped his clothes.
âLower your voice. Youâre scaring her.â
At that, the Grand Duke frozeâexcept for his constantly moving lips.
â⊠âŠ.â
âAnd donât mumble so much I canât understand you.â
âŠThis old man was a little extreme and strange.
âAnyway, sheâs not acceptable!â
His stern gaze fell back on me. I felt a wave of danger.
âAm I about to get kicked out?â
The fear Iâd imagined earlier was becoming reality.
Honestly, Iâd been too relaxed since his role wasnât big in the original story⊠but now, an unexpected problem had shown up.
âI thought, since both the first and second sons accepted me easily, he would too!â
That was way too optimistic!
âEven if you look at me like that, no! You look like youâd crumble if you bumped into anything!â
Uncle, shielding me, spoke in a cold voice.
âRubyâs place here is not for you to decide, Father. Same goes for anything involving the knights.â
âYou insolentââ
âAnd capable knight or soldier? I wonât forgive you for speaking of her like that, even if you are my father.â
âWhen did I ever call her a soldier? I told you to recruit someone useful!â
âThe war just ended. Unless theyâre mad about fighting, who would volunteer to come to the North?â
âAnd so you brought a doll-like girl instead?â
âThatâs why Rubyââ
âRuby? Even her name sounds like yours!â
ââŠAre you saying you like her or dislike her?â
Half-panicked, I could barely follow their conversation, too distracted by how tense it was becoming.
âDonât fight!â
I forced myself to step between them, looking up at the Grand Duke.
âPlease donât throw me out⊠I have nowhere to go.â
Well, technically I do, but I donât want to! I donât want to die either!
âYouâŠâ
âIf being small is the problem, Iâll eat a lot and grow taller. I wonât break if I bump into something. Iâm not actually that weakâif you saw me in action, youâd be surprisedâŠâ
Then suddenly, my view lifted.
âTsk. Why are you scaring her for no reason? Annoying.â
Uncle had picked me up completely, blocking my view of the Grand Duke. He clicked his tongue in displeasure and patted my back.
âWatch your tone with your father.â
The Grand Duke tried to kick Uncleâs shin, but of course the hero didnât get hit so easily.
âYouâve been ill for days, but it seems your strength isnât what it used to be.â
âWhat? Who spread the rumor Iâm sick?!â
âMorris, I think the Grand Duke should rest longer in the northern annex. Please escort him.â
âYou brat, are you ignoring your father?!â
I turned my head slightly.
The one trying to stop this ridiculous father-son fight was the skinny butler.
âHa-ha⊠Please, both of you, calm down. Youâll bring the castle down.â
Morris, the Grand Dukeâs butler, wiped his sweat-soaked forehead with a handkerchief.
Honestly, he looked like the one who needed rest.
âNo, this isnât the time to think that!â
I quickly decided.
Right now, the head of this ducal house was Uncle Leviathan. So if I was going to cling to anyone, it had to be him.
âYouâre going to send her back right awayââ
âNo!â
I hugged Uncleâs neck tightly. His solid body stiffened in surprise.
âNo matter what the Grand Duke says, Iâm staying here!â
I shut my eyes and shouted.
This was do-or-die!
âIâm going to live here! I donât want to be apart from Uncle!â
ââŠ.â
Silence.
I felt a low vibration from the body I was holding.
When I peeked one eye open, Uncleâs lips were twitching like crazy.
âHm.â
The Grand Duke, on the other hand, tilted his head with a strangely refreshed look.
ââŠSon.â
âYes.â
âYouâve got snot on you.â
A large hand pressed down on the back of my head.
âI know.â
âWhat an audacious little snot.â
âIâm not a snotâŠâ
I flared up out of stubbornness, but was easily ignored.
âWow. What is this?â
My eyes darted around awkwardly.
Thanks to the uninvited guest barging into what had been a cozy snack time.
âYou.â
The Grand Duke, now seated heavily on one sofa, gestured to me.
âYes.â
I sat opposite him, keeping my back straight.
âYou want to stay here that badly?â
âYesâŠâ
âThen show me your ability.â
âMy ability?â
âThatâs right. Whether itâs stamina, strength, whatever! To be a strong man of the North, you must prove your power.â
Like a predator lounging after a feast, the Grand Duke leaned back.
âTell me your ability!â
Ability? ObviouslyâŠ
âMagic power!â
âwas what I wanted to say, but I barely held it back.
âMy mental strength!â
Somewhere nearby, I thought I heard a muffled laugh.
âHm. Mental strength.â
The Grand Duke stroked his thick, bearded chin seriously.
âThatâs necessary too. Fine. Then right now!â
Gulp. I suddenly felt tense.
âFinish your snack.â
ââŠWhat?â
âDo you think Iâm a heartless old man?â
It seemed heâd just noticed the snack table.
He pounded his veined fist on the table.
âEat it!â Bang!
âWhen you finish!â Bang!
âThen Iâll test you and kick you out!â Bang!
So in the end, youâre still kicking me out?!
