~Chapter 19~
I kept my lips pushed out in a pout, and the Grand Duke clicked his tongue.
Suddenly, his sharp gaze shifted to the butler, Morris, standing behind me.
âMorris! Didnât you say she finished her meal? You should have told me she was having a snack! You donât disturb even a dog while itâs eating!â
âI⌠did not think to account for Lady Rubyâs snack schedule.â
Drip, drip. I could almost hear the sound of Butler Morrisâs sweat hitting the floor.
âWhat are you just standing there for?!â
I slowly reached for my fork, creaking in protest.
I glanced to the side, but Uncle, who was touching his lips, only raised an eyebrow.
âSo heâs not going to help me, huh.â
Iâll get back at him for this.
The more I looked over the snack table, the more my face turned into a frown.
âWhatâs with that expression?â
Up until now, Iâd been talking back to him, but now I kept my lips pressed together, staring at the floor. For the first time, the Grand Duke hesitated.
âIs there something you donât likeâŚ?â
âThe tableâŚâ
âHm?â
âItâs brokenâŚâ
In front of me was the solid wooden tableâsplit right down the middle.
âHuh? When did that happen?â
âHow am I supposed to eat like thisâŚâ
I felt a bit gloomy.
The mug had fallen through the crack, spilling pale pink liquid all over the floor.
Honestly, I liked strawberry milk more than cake. Sweet, cold, with real fruit piecesâŚ
ââŚI like it.â
âUhâŚâ
âI havenât even had a single drop yetâŚâ
My shoulders slumped without me meaning to.
Iâd noticed earlier that it had even more fresh strawberries than yesterday⌠what a wasteâŚ
âAh.â
Was this the Jebert-style mental strength test?
Donât cling to whatâs already lost?
Of course, that wasnât it.
In the end, the Grand Dukeâs booming voice had the castle staff grind up every strawberry in the estate and dump them into milkâŚ
âUnbelievableâŚâ
I stared at the huge container of strawberry milk, feeling conflicted.
âHappy now?â
The Grand Duke growled.
He was just sitting in the middle of the reception room, but his presence filled the place completely.
âYes, thank you.â
I fiddled with my mug as I replied. Honestly, I wasnât even sure if it was going into my mouth or up my nose.
âHmph.â
Only then did his thick, fluffy beard twitch in satisfaction.
I cautiously asked, âSo whereâs Uncle?â
âHe went to the northern outpost! Said there were traces of beasts.â
âGasp.â
So heâd run off and left me with this stubborn old man?
âAre you scared because I mentioned beasts? Yes, something like you, a little rabbit, would be a single bite.â
The Grand Duke seemed convinced I was frozen because of beasts.
âBeasts wouldnât throw me out of this house!â
And they donât punch down doors when they show up!
I set my mug down and shouted proudly,
âYes! Iâm a little scared!â
ââŚ.â
âSo I can stay here, right?â
I tried to sound as desperate and sparkly-eyed as possible.
The Grand Dukeâs shoulders stiffened as he sat with his back to the window.
I couldnât see his full expression, but deep lines formed at the corners of his elegant eyes.
I remembered Uncleâs words:
âJust cling to him. Like you did to me earlier.â
Was this really going to work?
Would he just kick me away for sounding weak?
âIf youâre scared, then you should stay!â
Surprisingly, it worked.
âIâm not such trash that Iâd throw out someone saying theyâre scared!â
I hadnât even cried, but okay.
âSo heâs weak to people acting weak.â
Uncle seemed a bit like that too. Was it a northern thing?
I decided to push further.
I jumped up and squeezed myself into the empty space beside him on the large sofa.
It was a two-seater, but way too cramped.
âYes. So Iâll just stay here. Itâs scary outsideâŚâ
Oh!
The couch shook like in an earthquake.
âYou keep wrigglingâtickles like crazy!â
âOh, if itâs uncomfortable, Iâll moveââ
âNo helping it!â
âAh!â
He grabbed me by the back of my collar and set me on his rock-solid thigh.
I found myself staring straight into his eyes at close range.
His thick eyebrows angled differently on each side, deep wrinkles around his eyes, cold violet irises, and a well-kept beard hiding an old scar.
ââŚEven your face looks ticklish.â
Just like Iâd studied him, the Grand Duke seemed to be studying me closely.
One eyebrow shot even higher.
âAre you really a boy? Youâre nothing like Void or Liam.â
Uh⌠because Iâm different?
Of course, I couldnât say that, so I just gave a vague smile.
âAnd what are you even wearing? A potato sack?â
âItâs clothes.â
âTch.â
He sounded like heâd seen something unpleasant.
He jerked his chin toward Hazel, who was standing nearby.
âYou! Count how many times those sleeves are rolled up!â
Hazel answered calmly, âPlease calm down, Lord Balrog. Lady Iveline will be coming in three days to take her measurements. Sheâs out of the territory right now.â
âThree days? So this little snot has to live in a potato sack for three days?!â
âItâs not that bad. Iâm fine!â
I quickly stepped in so Hazel wouldnât get caught in this, but was ignored.
The clothes were long and loose, but wearable.
Itâs not like I planned to stay in this house forever, so I didnât want to cause more trouble.
The Grand Duke grumbled for a while, muttering about his son and how things would be different if Rose were here.
âI canât stand it! Morris! When will our forge finish that new weapon?â
âItâs been a while since you gave them the plans⌠should be soon.â
âGood. Youâre coming with me tomorrow.â
âHuh? Why?â
The Grand Duke folded my rolled sleeves one more time and barked,
âTo do something about that potato sack of yours!â
âYouâre buying me clothes? For me?â
âIs there another shorty here?â
âYou said you were throwing me out at firstâŚâ
âI am!â
âWhat? You said if Iâm scared I can stay!â
âAh, cancel that! I canât stand the itchiness of looking at you!â
Wow, how can someone change their mind this fast?
I was going to lose my mind with this fiery old man.
Forget acting weakâthrow that plan away!
âWhy buy me clothes if youâre throwing me out?!â
âSo I can dress you up nicely before kicking you out!â
âThat makes no sense!â
âIt does here!â
âStubborn old man, fickle as ever!â
âYouâve already figured that out? Smart and quick-witted too!â
The people around us were watching with interest.
âUgh, like father, like son!â
Either way, arguing made me thirsty. I started to stand to grab my mugâ
And suddenly, my head felt oddly exposed.
I turned to see a big hand pulling away from the back of my head.
ââŚ.â
The stubborn lion pretended nothing happened.
Seriously, what is with himâŚ
Then it happened.
[ âŚ! ]
A burst of static rang in my head.
ââŚWhat is it?â
[ âŚbi! ]
âSnot!â
I must have wobbled, because the Grand Duke shot up like lightning and grabbed my shoulders.
[ Ruby. Ruby. Are you there? ]
âKhalid?â
When I pressed the sigil by my ear, the static vanished.
It was Khalid!
âI-I have a bit of a stomachacheâŚâ
âWhat?â
âI need the bathroom!â
I darted out of the reception room.
I thought I heard him calling, âKid!â from behind me, but that wasnât important right now.
âLady Ruby?â
âI-I need to be alone for a moment!â
Bang.
Leaving the startled Hazel behind, I shut the bedroom door quickly.
Pressing the sigil again, the static cleared instantly.
âKhalid Riork! You cut me off, and now you want toââ
[ I told you not to use my family name⌠No, thatâs not the point. Youâre in Northern Zerlox right now, right? ]
âDonât change the subject! And Iâm not telling you.â
[ I think the Arcane King has realized youâre alive and in the Babylon Empire. ]
âWhat?â
What did he just say?
I froze in the middle of the room.
The Demon King⌠had found out where I was?
