~Chapter 17~
The bedroom had already been tidied up by Hazel. I washed up on my own and changed into pajamas.
âAh, this feels nice!â
The sleeves were long, so I carefully folded them. Then I dove straight into bed.
Uncle was sitting sideways on the sofa in my room, reading documents. Someone must have brought them while I was washing up.
âYouâre not planning to just leave after watching me fall asleep, right?â
âIâm going to finish reading these papers. Donât flatter yourself.â
He glanced at me as I wriggled under the blanket.
âThen why not just go to your office?â
âBecause someone kept me from finishing earlier. The territory is on the verge of ruin.â
âGasp, that canât happen. Youâd better read hard before you goâŚâ
Ruined territory? Absolutely not.
I nodded without really listening. Sleep was already taking over my mind.
I had been busy running around all day and my energy was gone.
âRuby.â
At his voice, I forced my heavy eyes open.
âMm?â
âYou know where my bedroom is, right?â
âUpstairsâŚâ
âIf you suddenly wake up in the middle of the night, come to me.â
ââŚOnce Iâm asleep, I donât wake up easily.â
I heard him get up.
Then the bed dipped slightly. A large, warm hand stroked my forehead.
âIf it suddenly feels too dark, or if scary thoughts come to you, tell me.â
ââŚ? Okay.â
Half-asleep, I nodded. His calloused hand gently covered my eyes.
The world turned dark.
âRead with the light on⌠Youâll hurt your eyesâŚâ
An irresistible wave of sleep swept over me. This was the limit.
âGoodnight, Ruby.â
ââŚâ
âTodayâŚâ
The world faded into muffled silence.
What did he say next?
Thank you? Iâm glad?
Whatever it was, Iâm sure it was something warmâŚ
Ch.3
A few days later.
Uncle was a man who kept his word.
He was still busy, so eating every meal together wasnât possible, but at least once a day, he tried to be with us. That alone made Void look very satisfied.
âMm, things are going smoothly.â
After a full lunch, I was lazing around.
I must have really adapted to this place.
âMaybe I should start movingâŚâ
The thought made me sit up suddenly.
A chill ran down my neck. Wait.
âAm I forgetting something?!â
It felt like Iâd forgotten another person living in this houseâŚ
Just thenâknock, knock. The door opened.
âHazel?â
âLady Ruby, itâs snack time!â
Ah, sugar first.
âOkay!â
Hazel smiled softly. Over the past few days, weâd grown close enough that I spoke to her casually.
Heading to the tea room near my bedroom, I found someone already there.
âWhy are you wandering around working instead of in your office, Uncle?â
While signing papers, he glanced up at me with that handsome face.
âBecause I feel like it. Itâs my castle.â
Well⌠fair enough.
âYouâre late.â
When I hopped onto the soft sofa, Uncle nagged lightly.
Lately, heâd been obsessed with making the chef create all kinds of desserts. The chef might have suggested it first, but⌠who knows?
Of course, tasting new snacks was fun. But I worried the chef might be overworked.
âWhat a bad employerâŚâ
Even in the capital, Iâd noticed Uncle liked eating.
He didnât even avoid very sweet desserts.
Well, with a body that big, maybe he had to eat wellâŚ
âStill, making the chef work every day!â
âWhat did I do wrong this time?â
Uncle dangled his hand in front of me, showing fresh bite marks.
âYouâre not a kittenâŚâ
âItâs just! I did it in the chefâs place!â
ââŚWhat does that even mean?â
He mumbled while settling me deeper into the sofa.
âItâs been a while since youâve eaten. I canât let you go hungry.â
His tone was oddly dissatisfied.
âIâm not really hungry, I ate a lotâŚâ
âI am.â
ââŚ.â
Well, if he says so, I guess thereâs nothing to say.
Clink, clink. Snack time was pleasant.
âHow is it?â Uncle asked.
âItâs good.â
âYou didnât even eat it yet.â
I quickly poked the strawberry cream cake in front of me and took a bite.
âItâs good.â
âYou really canât be trusted.â
Sweetness spread, making the top of my head tingle.
âWhen youâre done, letâs go to the annex.â
âThe annex?â
âThe old manâs been too quiet. Better to act before he causes trouble.â
Uncle spoke lazily.
The old manâŚ
âThe Grand Duke of Jebert?â
Come to think of it, I had just been thinking about him earlier.
âHe wasnât that important in the original storyâŚâ
Maybe thatâs why heâd been so quiet?
I blinked.
Uncle, lounging on the opposite sofa, finished his cake in just three bites.
âSo⌠is the Grand Duke in the annex?â
âYeah. He almost never comes here.â
Uncle crossed his legs and sipped his tea. At moments like this, he looked every bit the great noble.
âHave you heard anything about your father?â
âI overheard a little.â
I brushed it off.
âI heard heâs sick.â
âThatâs true. But⌠heâd probably hate getting attention for it.â
His next words were so quiet they were hard to catch.
âOh noâŚâ
My neck stiffened again.
âNot visiting a sick elder in the family⌠isnât that really rude?â
And I was the outsider who could easily be targeted.
âWhat if he dislikes me?â
If the Grand Duke ordered me back to the capitalâŚ
Sensing my strange silence, Uncle spoke again.
âDonât worry. I told you, if anyone bothers you, Iâll deal with them.â
âWhat kind of person is the Grand Duke?â
âHmmâŚâ
He glanced up at the ceiling for a moment.
âAn angry lion?â
ââŚ?â
At the vague answer, I stared at him. His deep violet eyes met mine.
âYeah. Someone like you, a little bean, might get eaten right away.â
I snorted.
âLions are carnivores. They donât like beans.â
âShould I call that adult-like, or childishâŚâ
He chuckled and tapped my nose.
His calloused finger had pink cream on it.
When did that get there? Embarrassing.
âWould you like more, sir?â
âOf course.â
The way he confidently held out his plate made me sigh.
âDo you eat cake like itâs your birthday every day?â
âItâs good.â
Looking at him, youâd think heâd say, âA strong espresso or brandy is enough for me,â but no.
Preferences are strange things.
âEat more first. If you donât, Iâm not taking you anywhere.â
ââŚAlrightâŚâ
I picked up my fork again.
Maybe because of the sweetness filling my head, my worry about the Grand Duke faded a bit.
âMm, strawberry cream is tastier than the chestnut cream from yesterday!â
Iâll have to tell the chef later.
âAh, Iâm full.â
I patted my stomach, but Uncle tapped the table.
âItâs not time to put your fork down.â
âIâm full. I ate a lot.â
âYou barely nibbled.â
âNo, I didnât!â
âLeaving food like this will make our chef sad. Right?â
âOf course. Itâll break his heart,â the attendant said, placing strawberry milk in front of me.
Ugh. You should always keep the cook happyâŚ
I hesitated, then picked the single strawberry half-buried in cream and ate it.
I took a small bite of the sponge cake, and Uncle grinned.
âNow heâll be happy.â
Are strawberries bigger in the North?
My cheeks puffed like a hamsterâs. Soft cream and tangy juice filled my mouth.
âMmph mmph mmph.â
âMumbling insults wonât work.â
Ah, caughtâŚ
KWAANG!
Suddenly, a loud explosion shook the whole castle.
âAh!â
The tiered tray on the table wobbled, and faint vibrations followed.
Bang. Bang!
âW-what⌠hiccup!â
I was so startled I swallowed the cake without chewing, then hiccupped.
Uncle frowned deeply and reached for me.
âYou didnât bite your tongue? Let me see.â
âIs that important right now?!â
âDrink milk first.â
More bursts sounded, big and small.
Forget the milkâmy head was turning left and right.
âSigh⌠He really couldnât hold back.â
âIs it an attack?â
âYes, but no.â
What kind of answer was that?
The strange thing was⌠I was the only one panicking.
Everyone else calmly secured decorations and straightened frames.
âMy lord, what should we do?â
âIf we lock it, heâll just break the wall, wonât he?â
âDefinitely.â
Listening to Uncle and the attendant, I grew even more confused.
Thump, thump, thump.
Something heavy was getting closerâlike the charge of a bull, or the stomping of an angry giantâŚ
âFirst, drink the milk, Ruby. Stop hiccupping.â
Uncle gestured toward the strawberry milk. I reached for the mug without thinking.
KWAANG!
The thick door suddenly flew open.
âWhere is the new kid?!â
