~Chapter 16~
As the sun set and darkness fell, the smell of delicious food filled the whole castle.
âOh my, this is something. Itâs like a completely different place now.â
âButler Adolf!â
I ran toward Adolf as he entered the dining room.
âWhat about Uncle? Is he here yet?â
âHeâs on his way down now. But⌠is it really okay for everyone to do this togetherâŚ?â
I pulled the signed paper from my pocket.
âItâs fine. I already got the Dukeâs signature.â
âHeh-heh.â
Adolf looked at the paper and chuckled.
I proudly puffed out my chestâwhen suddenly, tap! A light flick landed on my head.
âSo this is what you were up to.â
âOw.â
âWhat did you do to my castle?â
âUncle.â
âFather!â
Void, who had been in the corner eating cookies, stood up.
âAll the troublemakers are here.â
Uncle folded his arms and looked between me and Void.
I led Uncle to the center, where it was brightly lit.
At the head of the shiny marble tableâthe seat was perfectly set. Uncle tilted his head as he looked at it.
âYouâre the main guest, so why am I sitting here?â
âNo. Youâre the main guest.â
ââŚ?â
âActually, itâs Voidââ
I corrected myself. That still felt strange to say.
âVoid wanted to throw a welcome party for you.â
âVoid?â
Uncleâs gaze moved to the boy wagging his metaphorical tail.
âYouâve worked so hard, soâŚâ
Void spoke with bright eyes, like he had been waiting for this moment. Uncleâs hand stopped mid-motion.
âIâm glad you came back safely. I⌠never got to tell you that when you first returned.â
Void looked a little nervous.
âSo I wanted to tell you this time.â
Uncle placed a hand on Voidâs head. A short chuckle escaped him.
âAlright, thank you.â
ââŚYes!â
Nice. That looked good.
I sat down with a satisfied smile.
Right on cue, a feast began arriving, one dish after another. There was even a cake piled high with pink cream. Wow, so pretty!
âDid you send food to the knights?â
âYes. They should be eating and drinking plenty by now.â
âTell the others to go and enjoy it too.â
Butler Adolf smiled.
âThanks to Lady Rubian and the young master, weâre being spoiled.â
The old butler, back straight, spoke again with a respectful face.
âThough itâs a bit late, once again, congratulations on your return, my lord.â
Others joined in.
âCongratulations on your victory, too!â
âThank you for your hard work!â
âWhy are you all making me feel itchy with these words?â
Uncle frowned deeply.
âItâs not like this is my first time coming back. Go on, go enjoy yourselves.â
He waved his hand with an exasperated face.
The castle staff laughed softly and left.
âFather, did you see my swordsmanship record?â
âI saw. Youâve improved a lot.â
âYes! I worked hard!â
âYouâll be going back to the academy next month. Are you ready?â
âNo problem! Teacher Ullin said next semester, Iâll definitelyâŚâ
Dinner continued peacefully.
Sometimes, Uncleâs aides or close companions came to give greetings and share drinks.
Even though it was a small, hastily prepared party, everyone seemed in good spirits.
Thank goodness.
âŚ
Meanwhile, I rolled a piece of green bell pepper on my plate.
It rolled over and bumped into Voidâs plate.
âSay it. Quickly.â
I gave him a sharp look. Void swallowed hard.
âUh⌠Father.â
Uncle looked up.
âIâm really fine eating with you now.â
Uncle, who had been about to drink his amber-colored liquor, froze.
âSo⌠can we have meals together from now on?â
ââŚ.â
He stayed silent for a moment. I couldnât guess what he was thinking.
But there was no escape now.
The war was over. He couldnât use the excuse of leaving soon anymore.
âSince weâre family now, they should get close quickly.â
I glanced between the two.
Uncle stared at his now-grown son. Void fidgeted but didnât look away.
ââŚI see.â
Not just taller⌠Uncle muttered so quietly it was almost inaudible.
It was the face of someone who had decided something.
âAlright, I understand.â
Voidâs face lit up immediately.
I smiled.
âSorry I didnât notice. It mustâve been hard to say.â
Uncle ruffled Voidâs hair.
Then Void suddenly pointed at me.
âActually, Rubian was the one who came up with this party. Please praise her.â
âRubi?â
Uncle turned to me.
âUh, wellâŚâ
Caught off guard, I blinked.
Uncle leaned back in his chair.
He crossed his arms with a thoughtful âHmm,â which somehow felt ominous.
âNow that I think about it, I signed for your welcome party.â
His sharp gaze poured down on me.
âYou canât give false reports to the Duke.â
He looked exactly like a boss scolding an employee for submitting a terrible report.
âCome here. You need to be punished.â
âGaspâwhat punishment?â
I flinched. Uncle jerked his chin toward my plate.
âFirst, the bell peppers youâve been avoiding.â
ââŚ.â
âEat them all. Right here.â
It was the harshest punishment.
I tried to cover them with my fork.
âIf you donât eat them, youâll only get one piece of the cake you keep glancing at.â
ââŚI donât like bell peppers!â
The texture, the color, the smellânothing! Iâd even told the chef I didnât like them, so why were they here?
I protested strongly, but even Void betrayed me.
âRubi, if youâre picky, you canât become a strong northern knight.â
He crossed his arms with the same strict face.
Like father, like son!
âThatâs right.â
Now that he had an ally, Uncle looked triumphant.
âUgh!â
A moment ago, they were awkward, but now they were teaming up?
Still, the score was 2:1.
Total defeat.
Uncleâs punishment didnât end there.
âLady Rubian, welcome to Jebert Castle!â
The party had completely flipped. I was seated in the main seat, eating all sorts of sweet, delicious things.
âOh my, sheâs just too cute!â
âI canât believe my hands could make something like thisâŚâ
The maids happily placed a strange, cone-shaped hat they had made on my head.
âLook at her face.â
Uncle poked my sulky cheek.
âThis isnât what I had in mindâŚâ
But the castle people bustled around, giving me welcome greetings.
Uncle and Void nodded together in satisfaction.
âIs this⌠a first birthday party?â
It kind of felt like it.
Anyway, the party ended smoothly.
As night fell and it was time to sleep, Void went up to his room first. I also stood up.
âIâm going to bed too!â
My eyelids were getting heavy.
âCome here, Rubi.â
The villain who made me eat five pieces of bell pepper reached out his hand. I ignored him in annoyanceâonly to be caught right away.
Uncle easily lifted me into his arms. I smelled a faint scent of alcohol.
âWhy are you coming along?â
âYou didnât say goodnight. Be polite.â
âOh⌠goodnight?â
My deliberately cheeky tone made Uncle pinch my nose lightly.
âYou only act polite when you want something.â
Step, step.
We left the dining room and walked down the hallway, up the stairs, and around a corner.
I tilted my head.
âAre you inviting me to your room?â
âIâm too drunk to go all the way to my bedroom.â
âYouâre not even staggering⌠whoa!â
While holding me, Uncle suddenly lowered himself quickly and chuckled.
I thought I was going to fall!
Of course, his arms were steady and safe.
âSee? Iâm staggering.â
ââŚAre you teasing me?â
âYouâre very smart.â
The wicked uncle straightened up and walked on. Thanks to his long legs, we reached the room in just a few steps.
