~Chapter 15~
So, he could hear everything.
I felt a little embarrassed, so I pretended I didnât hear.
âWhereâs Father?â
Void asked as he sat down.
âHe said he has a lot of documents to look over.â
âOh, I see.â
He replied like he didnât expect much.
But by now, it was obvious.
Void asked about Uncle at every mealtime.
Even though he knew Uncle wouldnât appear, he still hopedâjust in case.
âHmmâŚâ
I held my spoon in my mouth and stared at Void.
No matter how I looked, he seemed like someone who wanted to eat with Uncle.
âWait, come to think of it, I havenât had a single meal with Uncle since I came here, either.â
Could it be that Uncle purposely left so we could eat together?
I fiddled with a small hairpin.
âHey, Hazel.â
I whispered, covering my mouth with a big piece of bread.
âYes, Lady Rubian.â
ââŚ?â
Surprisingly, Hazel had the skill to whisper without moving her lips.
Keeping a calm face, I asked.
âIs Uncle avoiding eating with Void on purpose?â
Hazel paused slightly.
Thatâs a yes.
ââŚNo. The Lord is really busy today.â
âToday?â
âWell, to be honest, itâs rare for the two of them to eat together. Over the past few years, the Lord has hardly stayed in the castle, and⌠when Young Master Void was little, he was very afraid of the Lord.â
âOh, I heard about that.â
âHe would get indigestion every time they ate together⌠so it just became a habit.â
Hmm. I took a small bite of the bread crust. It was crispy.
âVoid was that scared of Uncle?â
âWhen the young masters first came to the castle⌠the Lord was in a very bad state. So much that no one could approach him.â
Ah. That must have been when he lost his baby and fell into despair.
I remembered Uncle Leviathanâs past.
âHe wandered for years, I think.â
When grief is too big, sometimes you canât see anything around you.
âMaybe they got off on the wrong foot from the start. Of course, he always regrets it nowâŚâ
Hazel muttered softly, then suddenly seemed to realize what she was saying. âOh my, what am I saying?â She quickly lifted her head.
âSorry, I interrupted your meal, didnât I?â
âNo, itâs fine.â
So this was the situationâ
A father who felt sorry for not treating his son well in the past, now being overly careful.
And a son who didnât want to upset the father he respected.
âBut how long will they keep going like this?â
I poked a piece of meat Void had cut and put it in my mouth.
Chew, chew.
The juice spread in my mouth and meltedâit was the finest meat Iâd ever tasted.
âRubian, you should eat the bell peppers too.â
âMmmâŚâ
Lost in thought, I answered vaguely and pushed the chopped bell peppers off my plate.
ââŚâ
Of course, I didnât notice the young masterâs shocked expression at my unheard-of table manners.
Chew, chew, gulp.
âHey.â
When I looked up, Void was staring at me with a slightly sour face.
âOh no, look at that. He looks a little sadâŚâ
Honestly, I wasnât sure if I should get involved.
It was their family matterâwas it right for me to interfere?
Besides, in the original story, their relationship improved slowly over time anyway. Even without me.
But⌠I fiddled with my hairpin again.
âStill, Iâm grateful to both of themâŚâ
Maybe I could give them a little push.
âHow about I ask Uncle to eat with us from now on?â
ClangâVoid dropped his cutlery.
âHuh?â
âWhy? You donât like that?â
âNo, I do⌠like it.â
âAre you still scared of Uncle?â
âOf course not!â
Right, considering how much he likes the Hero cards.
Void scratched his cheek shyly.
âNow I understand that what happened before was because Father went through something bad⌠Of course, Iâd like to eat with him now.â
âYouâd like to, but?â
âItâs just⌠it feels a bit awkward to bring it up now.â
Ah. I narrowed my eyes.
âSo you need an excuse?â
âWell, itâs not exactly that⌠He might find it bothersomeâŚâ
âHmm.â
I thought about how to help while Void dug himself deeper.
Then I noticed servants walking busily outside the dining room, carrying piles of documents. Probably heading to Uncleâs office.
The corners of my lips lifted.
âHey, Void.â
âYeah?â
âI have a good idea.â
When I smiled with sparkling eyes, Void flinched slightly.
Whatâs with my little sister⌠she looks like a bit of a devil.
I thought I heard him mutter something like thatâ
But whatever.
Knock, knock.
I knocked on the heavy office door.
âCome in.â
A low voice.
When I carefully entered, Uncle was sitting at his desk.
His silhouette, with the sun at his back, looked huge. Beside him, a table full of coffee cups and the remains of quick meals.
Ah, I could feel itâ
The smell of an overworked office worker.
âLeave the documents there and⌠Whatâs all this⌠Wait, what are you doing here?â
He was flipping through something, then looked up at me with surprise.
âExcuse me, sir.â
âWhat?â
I bowed 90 degrees. Uncle frowned like he was looking at some strange creature.
Ignoring that, I walked over.
I placed the paper I was holding on top of the messy stack of documents.
âWhatâs this?â
âPlease review this, Duke!â
ââŚHuh?â
He looked at me with disbelief.
He picked up the paper covered in messy handwriting.
âA report?â
âYes!â
Well⌠to be exact, it was an approval form.
ââŚWe plan to hold a welcome party, so please sign?â
His reluctant voice came out, and I straightened my back, nodding along.
âWhatâs this supposed to mean?â
âIt means exactly what it says.â
I spoke shyly, like a rookie handing their first form to a department head.
âIâm planning a welcome party. Location: central dining room!â
ââŚ?â
âPlease check the item list here and sign.â
Have you ever heard of a self-planned welcome party?
âYou really do all sorts of thingsâŚâ
Uncle snorted in disbelief.
âYouâre not going to approve it?â
âOf course I will.â
Scribbleâhe signed without hesitation. Perfect.
I gripped the returned paper tightly.
When I grinned, Uncleânow leaning on his chinâalso smirked.
âThen Iâll see you at dinner!â
âAh, Iâm busy soââ
âYou have to come, Duke. You signed.â
ââŚHuh?â
He sat up straight.
I pointed to the tiny line at the bottom.
âIf you read here⌠itâs also an invitation. Signing means you agree to attend.â
See? You should always read before you sign, Uncle.
Leaving the Duke blinking in confusion, I waved.
âSee you later, Uncle!â
Clickâthe door closed neatly.
Outside, Void was waiting.
He looked a little nervous.
âDid it work?â
âOf course.â
We leaned together and giggled.
It started small, but somehow the whole castle got excited.
âMove aside, everyone!â
âHey, that decoration fell off!â
âWell, of course, weâve never hung things like this before!â
âGlue! Bring more glue!â
The tall maids, the servants, the attendantsâeveryone was running around.
âWhere are the gardeners? I told them to bring more flowers, and theyâre still not here!â
âIâm going to kick their butts myself!â
I sat in the dining room, watching blankly.
The once-barren room was now full of colorful flowers and decorations.
âI could do it quickly with magicâŚâ
But of course, I couldnât use magic.
Besides, Hazel told me my job was to just sit here. So I was sitting.
âEveryoneâs so motivated.â
I had just wanted to prepare some food and eat together⌠but it felt like things had gotten bigger.
âLady Rubian.â
A gentle voice spoke.
When I turned, I saw a smiling middle-aged womanâthe castleâs chef.
âI came to ask what kind of cake you like.â
âCake?â
âYes. I need to choose the cream.â
I tilted my head.
âBut⌠isnât this party for Uncleâs return?â
The answer came from the other side.
âItâs your welcome party too.â
Void was right next to me, stacking cards.
âHuh? Wasnât that just the excuse?â
If I had called it a party for Uncleâs return, he wouldnât have agreed.
But Void looked like heâd overheard something he shouldnât have.
âSo you want me left out?â
âWell, not exactlyâŚâ
I blinked, unable to think of what to say. The chef spoke again.
âNow, could you tell me what kind of cream you like?â
What kind? As if I had a preference.
âI⌠donât really know much about cake! Anything is fine.â
In both my previous and current life, I hadnât eaten much cake. You need experience to have preferences.
âOh.â
For a second, the chefâs eyes widened at my answer, but she quickly smiled warmly again.
âThat happens. Then⌠how about my special cream? Iâm sure youâll like it.â
âYes, that sounds good!â
âSpecial,â huh? I was kind of looking forward to it.
The chef also asked about foods I couldnât eat and textures I liked, then left.
After that, many people came and went.
The wide dining room quickly became dazzling. Like a real party hall!
