~Chapter 25~
âGrand Duke?â
At some point, the Grand Duke was standing right behind me, his eyes blazing.
âThat damn LeviathanâŚâ
Huh? Out of nowhere?
âRubian, did His Grace not even give you any pocket money?â
Even Sir Leon bent one knee to ask me.
What on earth were they talking about?
I had no idea that the thought Iâd sighed out had slipped into words, and I just stared blankly at the two men losing their minds.
âWhat do you want?! Huh?â
âPardon?â
âWhat do you want so badly that you look so downcast? Tell me right now!â
The Grand Duke pounded his chest and roared.
S-Something I want?
âHurry and say it, Rubian. Thatâs an order from your senior.â
Why was Sir Leon like this too?
Just then, the shop door creaked open, and a familiar face stepped in.
âKeep your voice down. They can hear you all the way outside. Embarrassing, really.â
âUncle!â
Overjoyed, I ran straight to him.
Uncle Leviathan rested a hand on my head.
Wearing light armor from a trip to the knights, he looked as dashing as ever.
âI heard you were nearby, so I came to check⌠What trouble have you caused this time?â
âI didnât cause any trouble!â
ReallyâI hadnât yet!
When I grinned up at him, his eyes narrowed slightly.
âYour Grace.â
Sir Leon ground his teeth as he greeted him.
It almost sounded like, âY-your GraceeeeâŚâ
ââŚ? Your eyes look a little insolent, Leon.â
âThatâs a misunderstanding.â
Uncle tilted his head.
Then, a fist like a lump of iron came flyingâbut of course, he dodged it easily.
âYou bastard!â
âWhat now?â
âYou havenât even given the kid pocket money? What have you been doing?â
Silence.
ââŚWhat?â
A reply finally came back, like from a broken doll.
âShe has something she wants, but says she canât buy it because she doesnât have money! Sheâs been fretting over it!â
Thump, thumpâthe Grand Duke was the one stomping his feet.
âNo, um, thatâs⌠not exactlyâŚâ
Of course, there was something I wanted.
But how did they even know?!
âAh, my blood pressureâŚâ
The Grand Duke clutched the back of his neck, staggering.
âIs it true?â
Uncle crouched down to look me straight in the eye.
âWas there something you wanted?â
His face looked almost pleased. I suddenly felt shy and hesitated.
âI⌠I do want something, but itâs not like I urgently need it right nowâŚâ
âTell me. What is it?â
âUmâŚâ
âRuby.â
At the urging tone, I had no choice but to raise a finger.
Six eyes inside the shop followed my fingertip in unison.
âThat one⌠over hereâŚâ
I shyly pointed to one side of a shelf.
ââŚall the way to there?â
My fingertip moved long across the display.
If I could have them all, why not
ââŚ.â
Uncle stayed silent for a moment.
Was I being too greedy?
âNo, actually, just this oneââ
âCall the owner.â
Suddenly, Uncle straightened up.
âYes, sir!â Sir Leon moved like lightning. The Grand Duke scratched his chest, muttering about feeling itchy.
Soon, the shop owner, back from an errand, rushed in. Uncle said to his faceâ
âIâm buying this shop. Name your price.â
âY-Your Grace?â
âI have no hobby of buying cheap trinkets. Ask high.â
Wait⌠what?
I went in as a customer and came out as the ownerâŚ
ââŚ.â
Rustle. I stared blankly at the paper in my bag.
The shop deed that had been shoved into my hands.
âAre you sure itâs fine if I just send one crate of the purple magic stones to the castle?â
âOh, yes.â
The shopâs former owner asked me, and I answered absentmindedly.
By sheer happenstance, I now had the right to dispose of the magic stones as I pleasedâsomething even Uncle couldnât interfere with.
âI didnât know you liked decorative stones.â
âHaha⌠theyâre prettyâŚâ
âI only wanted the purple magic stones!â
Of course, I wouldnât have minded having green, red, or even blue stones while I was at it.
âSigh, canât be helped.â
Refusing a gift would be rude, after all.
So I had to sign the papers.
Since I had no intention of touching the other stones, I only asked for some of the purple ones from the storeroom to be sent.
âSuch a small appetite!â
The Grand Duke clicked his tongue beside me.
Uncle, meanwhile, was instructing the former owner on various thingsâ
Only send stones without any harmful energy, package them so the child could open them easily, and so onâŚ
Feeling a bit overwhelmed, I left Uncle and Sir Leon inside and stepped out.
âIs there anywhere else you want to stop by?â
The Grand Duke followed and asked.
âWell, actuallyâŚâ
Thatâs when it happened.
âHa ha! Grandpa, that tickles!â
With a cheerful laugh, a small cart rolled toward us.
On the driverâs seat sat a kind-looking merchant and a boy who seemed to be his grandson.
âHey now, donât play with the reinsââ
At that moment, the boy yanked the reins hard. The cart, which had been going straight, lurched.
âCareful!â
The cart veered out of control.
Startled, the Grand Duke pulled me toward him.
Even in such a sudden moment, I thought heâd have no trouble holding me upâ
Because⌠the Grand Duke was bigger and sturdier than a mountain range.
But unexpectedly, his large body swayed weakly.
âGrand Duke!â
âUgh.â
Thud. In the end, we both rolled onto the ground.
âOh my, are you alright?! Iâm so sorry! Oh no, what do I do?!â
The merchant rushed over in a panic after stopping the cart.
âChild! Are you alright?â
On the dirt ground, the Grand Duke quickly turned to check on me. Iâd landed on my backside, but since heâd shielded me, I wasnât badly hurt.
âI was startled, but Iâm fine.â
I calmly dusted myself off and stood up.
âMore importantly, are youââ
âThis damnedâŚâ
His hand clenched the dirt tightly. A bulging vein stood out on his flushed forehead.
âThis damned bodyâŚâ
His jaw tightened hard.
âWhat happened?â
Uncle came out from the shop.
He took in the scene quicklyâthe Grand Duke on the ground, me standing awkwardly beside him, the sweating merchant apologizing, and the frightened, tearful boy.
âLeon.â
Sir Leon, whoâd been with Uncle, immediately stepped forward to handle the merchant and clear the area.
âFather, letâs get youââ
âJust take care of the kid!â
The Grand Duke stood abruptly. His broad shoulders heaved, and his body trembled faintly.
âIâm going back!â
The massive figure stormed off. I stood there, staring blankly at his retreating back.
âUncle, I think the Grand Dukeâs madâŚâ
A warm hand rested gently on my head.
âHeâs not mad at you, so donât worry. Are you alright?â
âMm-hmm. Just got my clothes a bit dirty.â
âLetâs go. You said you had clothes on order.â
âWell, yes, butâŚâ
My gaze kept drifting toward the spot where the Grand Duke had disappeared.
He hadnât met my eyes.
âThis damned bodyâŚâ
As if he were a sinner.
My chest felt heavy.
