~Chapter 24~
I headed to the forge with the Grand Duke.
His hobby was weapon development.
Drawing blueprints himself, commissioning their creation, and then testing the completed productsâthis was his only real pastime.
âWell, since many of them actually went into mass production, I guess itâs not just a hobby.â
One of House Jebertâs main businesses was the weapons trade. The high-quality minerals mined from the territoryâs surrounding mountains were famous across the continent.
âThe shields that blocked dark magic were especially good.â
And with the continent-wide war in recent years, business must have been booming, whether they meant it to or not.
âWow, itâs huge.â
âItâs probably the biggest in the Empire.â
The forgeâs massive size matched its reputation.
If I exaggerated a little, it looked almost like a small village.
âWelcome.â
We entered the largest building among many. The owner greeted us halfheartedly.
The heat from the furnace hit me in a wave. Clang, clangâthe sound of hammering metal rang irregularly.
âBring it out! My weapon!â
The Grand Dukeâlike a gangsterâshouted suddenly.
The shirtless owner, a pipe in his mouth, glanced up.
With his brown hair tied messily and soot smudged everywhere, the man looked surprisingly young.
ââŚYou have a late-born kid or something?â
Thud. The huge hammer he held hit the floor.
âYouâre still as lacking as ever.â
âOh?â
The owner bent down to look at me, his eyes full of curiosity.
âPut out the fire.â
The Grand Duke spoke with displeasure. The owner pouted.
âTelling me to put out the fire in a forgeâŚâ
Cough, cough.
A sudden gust of wind blew pipe smoke into the air.
The Grand Duke clicked his tongue, grabbed me, and set me down on the other side.
âPut it out, now!â
âOh.â
The owner seemed to only then realize he was still holding the pipe.
âAh⌠sorry about that.â
He waved the smoke away.
âSo what is this kid? Donât tell me heâs your illegiââ
Clang. The Grand Duke lightly kicked the hammer.
âYou really live without hearing a thing from the outside world, donât you? Now that I think about it⌠itâs about time I tore this place apart.â
ââŚThis anvilâs not for that. Neitherâs my furnace. Nothing here is.â
âThen stop talking nonsense and bring me the sword!â
When the Grand Duke barked, the owner shook his head.
âOld man, your temper isâŚâ
âI can hear you.â
âGuess your hearingâs still fine! Is that a good thing?â
âYou littleââ
Hmm, I couldnât tell if they were on good terms or not.
Either way, anyone who could talk to the Grand Duke like that clearly wasnât ordinary.
The owner rummaged noisily through something and then suddenly pulled out a sword.
With another loud crash, he cleared a table and placed the sword on it.
âOhhh!â
The Grand Dukeâs eyes sparkled as he looked at it.
âIâll hammer it a few more times, but the magic stone refinement on this side is a bit tricky, so itâs stillâŚâ
âWouldnât it be better to use Epiron for the handle?â
âHmm, maybe. But Epiron catches the sunlight at an awkward angle.â
The two adults dove into deep weapon talk. Seeing my chance, I cautiously backed away.
âWhere are you going?â
I thought Iâd gotten away unnoticed.
âI just want to look aroundâŚâ
âNo! Do you know how dangerous it is here?â
âThen Iâll wait outside!â
He looked back and forth between the sword and me, clearly torn.
âIâll behave!â
I put on my best model-student face. The owner, who had been watching, rubbed the bridge of his nose and spoke up.
âIf youâre bored, want to try hammering?â
âHuh? Me? Hammering?â
âOr you could watch the quenching⌠Oh, or you could pick out a pretty metal scrap over there to keep.â
âWhy are you giving her jobs?!â
ââŚ? At that age, I thought it was the most fun thing to do.â
The owner looked genuinely puzzled.
âThatâs why you grew up obsessed with weapons!â
âHah, why does that sound like a compliment?â
âItâs not a compliment!â
Yep, definitely not an ordinary guy.
âHehe⌠Iâll just wait outside.â
I slipped out of the forge quietly.
Once outside, a familiar face was waiting.
Ah, so thatâs why the Grand Duke let me go so easilyâbecause he knew my escort knight was here.
âSir Leonâuh, I mean, Senior!â
ââŚBeen a while.â
Sir Leon, with his blue hair, looked down at me. Something flickered in his stern eyes.
âItâs been a while! Why are you looking at me like that?â
âWhy havenât you ever⌠joined the knightsâŚâ
âHuh?â
âMm. Never mind.â
I tilted my head, but started walking again.
Sir Leon followed.
âWhere are you going?â
âI want to visit that place!â
I pointed to a small shop near the forge.
Just like on the mapâit was a magic stone shop!
âA mineral shop?â
âNot allowed?â
âWell, itâs right next door, soâŚâ
âThe Grand Duke will take a while. Right, Senior?â
ââŚFine, no choice.â
Sir Leon gently took my outstretched hand.
After saying something to another knight nearby, we headed for the shop.
âWow, so shiny. Pretty.â
The shop seemed emptyâmaybe the owner had stepped out. I looked around with bright eyes.
Naturally, I stopped in front of the magic stone display.
All shapes, all colors.
A smile spread on my lips.
âAs expected, they have plenty hereâthis land hunts magical beasts all the time.â
Magic stones could be obtained by killing magical beasts, or by mining magic ore.
Of course, quality varied greatly, and the most powerful stones came from beasts.
Like rare items in a game.
Magic stonesâalso called mana stones (though in my view they were different)âcould be processed into magic tools.
âIn short, these stones are the main materials for magic devices.â
Of course, ordinary people couldnât just make magic devices.
âWhen I was in the kingdom, I made magic devices from these stonesâŚâ
Our kingdom imported them.
We did have some, but Zerlox stones were the highest quality.
Probably because this land teemed with terrifying magical beasts.
âThen we sold the magic devices back to the continent.â
âOh.â
My eyes widened as I scanned the display.
âFound itâBarrier Stones.â
Transparent stones with a faint lavender hue filled my vision.
âWhat are you staring at?â
âSenior, Senior.â
I tugged his sleeve.
âThere are so many purple stones here. What are they used for?â
I asked as if I didnât know.
âTheyâre mostly useless. Sometimes used as sword ornaments because of the color, but theyâre heavy and not practical.â
âReally?â
I held one up to the lightâperfectly clear, no impurities. This was premium qualityâŚ
âSince theyâre useless, thereâs little demand for them.â
That was wrong.
It wasnât that there was no demandâpeople just didnât know how to use them.
âOnly I know the method to use Barrier Stones to make magic devices, even in the kingdom.â
I gripped the purple stone tightly.
âThis is it.â
The way to protect myselfâand Uncle.
âIâll use these stones to create a barrier over all of Zerlox. Like in the Magic Kingdomâan unbreakable shield.â
The Magic Kingdom was a thousand-year fortress.
No one could invade, and no attack could harm it.
People thought the mages cast some great protective magic, but in truth, it was because of the barrier magic devices planted throughout the kingdom.
Ancient magical constructs no longer found anywhere in this world.
âI can do it.â
I was born with every magic circle in my headâancient or modern, it didnât matter.
The problem was something more practicalâŚ
âTo do that, Iâll need to buy a huge amount of these stonesâŚâ
Covering all of Zerlox would take an enormous quantity.
I sighed quietly. Sir Leonâs gaze fell on me.
I was so deep in thought, I didnât notice the large shadow falling over me from behind.
âIâll also need a hidden workshop to make the devicesâŚâ
Could I do it?
I sighed again.
âLittle booger, what are you doing here?â
But it wouldnât be easy⌠Never mind the workshopâfor now, I didnât even have the money toâ
âIâm brokeâŚâ
ââŚâ
ââŚâ
Grit.
âHuh?â
At the sound of teeth grinding, I looked up.
