Chapter: 2
After coming down from the mountain, I safely arrived at a nearby village.
Quite a bit of time must have passedâthe sun had risen long ago, and the streets were crowded with people.
âSo far, so good. Then nextâŚâ
I need to go where the protagonist is!
I thought hard.
âIn the novel, the protagonist spent their childhood at the ducal residence in the dukeâs territory.â
Thanks to the many stories told by my older brotherâwhom I had thought was just an adventurerâI knew the empireâs geography fairly well, considering I had lived confined in the temple.
âAnd the ducal residence isnât some hidden place. If I ask around, I should be able to get there.â
But there was a problem.
ââŚHow am I supposed to get there?â
With my current condition, walking all the way seemed impossible.
I thought I had recovered, but perhaps because I had walked all night, my forehead felt a little warm. If I wasnât careful, I might come down with a fever again.
âShould I rent a carriage?â
I fumbled with the two gold coins in my pocket. I had brought them with me when I left the room.
âThe money my brother gave me as emergency funds.â
He had secretly slipped it to me the last time we met, and since Iâd never had a chance to use it, Iâd just kept it.
âThis is exactly what itâs for. Donât be stingy!â
Clutching the gold coins tightly, I headed to where the carriages were gathered.
A coachman happened to be calling out to customers.
âOne gold coin to the capital! Two gold coins to Liberamon! Cheap, cheap!â
Liberamon!
That was the name of the region where the ducal residence was.
âAnd the price is exactly two gold coins!â
I immediately approached the coachman.
âUm, could I rent a carriage? To Liberamon.â
âHuh? Just you, kid?â
The coachman looked me up and down. I clasped my hands together and spoke.
âYes. I have something urgent to attend to.â
âWell, sure.â
Thankfully, the coachman agreed without much fuss.
âThe fare is five gold coins.â
ââŚPardon?â
I froze just as I was about to hand over the coins.
âYou just said two gold coins.â
âDid I say that? Hah, thatâs funny. If you want to ride, stop talking nonsense and pay up.â
I didnât have five gold coinsâŚ
When I hesitated, unable to pay, the coachman frowned and waved his hand dismissively.
âWhat, youâre joking around without even having money? This is why you donât entertain kidsâ games. Stop wasting my time and get lost.â
I was chased away just like that.
âThis is bad. I really need to rent a carriage⌠Should I ask the other coachmen?â
But the moment I looked their way, the other coachmen snickered.
âFive gold coins is way too cheap, isnât it?â
âThereâd be nothing left after that. I wouldnât give a ride at that price. Youâre quite generous.â
It seemed the others wouldnât help either.
âWhat should I do? I canât suddenly come up with more moneyâŚâ
I stomped my feet in frustration, then let out a deep sigh.
âWhat am I even doing right now? If I stay this weak, I wonât accomplish anything. I already made up my mind.â
If I was going to save my brother, I had to change myself first.
âI need to be confident! If I get intimidated and canât do anything, itâs all over!â
I took a deep breath and approached the coachman again.
âYouâre back? I told you not to mess around.â
The coachman sneered at me.
I met his gaze without blinking and spoke clearly.
âIt seems like youâre the one playing games here, sir.â
âWhat, what? Hah, what is this kid saying now?â
The coachman let out a hollow laugh in disbelief.
But I didnât back down and replied confidently.
âYou told other people it was two gold coins, but you told me five.â
âI didnât say that. And even if I did, so what? If I say itâs five, itâs five. Who do you think you are?â
âIâm a saintess candidate.â
I showed him the temple insignia I was wearing on my wrist. It was like an ID card given to those affiliated with the temple.
As a saintess candidate, of course I had one.
âI never thought Iâd use it like this.â
I felt a bit strange, but I pretended to stay calm.
âBecause dark magic is spreading throughout the empire, the templeâs authority is incredibly high right now. So treating temple affiliates carelessly is unthinkable.â
Moreover, since there was currently no saintess, saintess candidates were treated even betterâor so Iâd heard.
Iâd never experienced it firsthand, since Iâd never been outside the temple.
âEven if itâs power I never wanted, I have to use whatever I can.â
No matter what, I was going to save my brother.
âA saintess candidateâŚ? Is this real? N-no, is it truly real?!â
The coachman panicked when he saw the insignia and even changed his tone.
Silently, I infused holy power into the insignia.
It shone with a white light, flashing briefly.
âEek!â
The coachman jumped in shock. I decided to press my advantage further.
âYou just tried to cheat a saintess candidate out of money.â
âH-huhâŚâ
âWhat on earth am I supposed to report to the templeâŚâ
When I shook my head and spoke gravely, the coachman went pale and then bent deeply at the waist.
âI-Iâm sorry! Iâll take you there immediately!â
Yes!
I quickly climbed into the carriage.
âThank you. May the blessings of the gods be with you.â
ââŚ?â
Perhaps confused by my change in attitude, the coachman stared at me blankly.
I didnât avert my eyes and spoke firmly.
âWhat are you waiting for? Please depart at once.â
âY-yesâŚ.â
Soon, the carriage rattled as it began moving.
âBeing confident suits me more than I expected.â
I thought to myself as I watched the scenery pass by.
It was already dark by the time the carriage arrived in Liberamon.
âThank you for your hard work! Iâll be going now!â
âAh, umâŚ!â
I was about to pay him for bringing me here, but the moment I stepped off the carriage, the coachman drove away at full speed.
He was probably afraid Iâd report his earlier behavior to the temple.
Watching the carriage disappear in a cloud of dust, I thought:
âIs this really okay?â
Of course, it wasnât right for him to cheat and mock meâbut I was a saintess candidate.
âIâm supposed to be more virtuous and generous than others.â
In the end, it looked like I had punished him and refused to pay.
For a saintess candidate, it was something that should weigh on the conscience, butâŚ
âWhew, saved some money.â
That kind of generosity had nothing to do with me. It wasnât like I wanted to be a saintess candidate in the first place.
In a situation where I had to use everything available to me, saving money wasnât a bad thing.
âBesides, he ran off on his own.â
I promptly forgot about it and walked on lightly.
A short while laterâ
âThis is itâŚ!â
After asking a passing patrol, I arrived at the Argent Ducal Residence.
âWho goes there?â
As I approached the main gate, the guards became alert.
âHello. Iâm a saintess candidate named Winiel. I have something to discuss with the House of Argent. Please allow me to meet Young Master Kain Argent.â
Once again, I invoked my status as a saintess candidate.
âWhat? A saintess candidate? Uh⌠please wait a moment.â
Thankfully, it worked again.
After checking my temple insignia, the guard looked back and forth between me and it in surprise, then ran into the mansion, saying he would inquire inside.
âI canât believe this is helping me so much.â
Back at the temple, Iâd thought it was completely useless.
Leaning against the wall, I waited for the guard to return.
âAhâŚâ
Suddenly, I felt dizzy.
âNow that I think about it, I havenât eaten anything all day.â
Unlike the coachman, who had eaten the provisions he brought along, Iâd had nothing and was completely starving.
âI couldnât eat properly even when I was sick.â
Hilla had given me the same hard bread as always, whether I was ill or not.
Iâd forced myself to eat just to survive, but I hadnât had the strength to chew much of it.
âI think my feverâs worse than before.â
Feeling my forehead, which was hotter than it had been during the day, I grew anxious.
âWhat if I canât even explain properly when I meet him?â
Just as my strength was draining away and it was becoming hard to stand, the guard returned.
I quickly pushed myself off the wall and prepared to go inside.
âOf course theyâll let me in. Iâm a saintess candidate.â
But what I heard was shocking.
âIâm sorry, but it seems it will be difficult for you to meet the young master.â
âWhat? Why?â
âAt such a late hour, appearing without notice and claiming to be a saintess candidateâit seems they find it suspicious.â
âWhat? You saw the temple insignia!â
I pulled out the insignia again and infused it with holy power.
White light sparkled.
But the guard merely shrugged.
âThese days, even fake ones are made quite well.â
âThatâs ridiculous. Who would dare impersonate one?!â
I thrust the insignia into the guardâs hand.
âIf you think itâs a lie, try it yourself. If itâs fake, it should shine no matter who uses it.â
âEh, you probably set it up so it wonât work when I try.â
The guard didnât even try to listen.
âIf you wanted to come to the ducal residence, you couldâve contacted us properly through the temple. Why show up in the middle of the night looking like that? Honestly, it does seem suspicious.â
I pressed my lips tightly together.
He wasnât wrong. A saintess candidate could easily request an official visit, yet here I was appearing suddenly at this hour.
And it was true that I looked a mess.
âAlright, time to go back. Kid, youâre fearless. How dare you impersonate a saintess candidate? Iâll let you off just this once.â
Shoo, shoo.
The guard, now speaking casually, even came out through the gate and shoved me away.
âNoâŚ!â
I tried to brace myself and resist, but I was no match for him and was pushed back.
âIâll get in somehow.â
After being thrown out, I lingered around the ducal residence, looking for an opening.
But perhaps because they were knights of a ducal house, no matter how much I observed, I couldnât find any gap to slip through.
âWhat should I do? Pretend the temple sent me and make a fake letter?â
It was a ridiculous idea. I couldnât even imagine what would happen if I got caught.
âThen maybe Iâll come back tomorrow and try again. It might be different during the day. If they know I waited all night, they might believe me.â
But despite my resolve, my feet wouldnât move.
âTo turn back when the ducal residence is right in front of meâŚâ
I grew restless, wanting to run over and beg right away.
Just as I let out a sigh so deep it felt like the ground would cave inâ
â!â
I sensed a murky energy from somewhere.
âThis is⌠dark magic?â
I quickly turned my head toward the source.
It was the forest right next to the ducal residence.
What was happening?
âWaitâdark magic is used to summon monsters. And if dark magic activates there right nowâŚ!â
A monster would be summoned, and the temple would move to deal with it.
âThen they might find out that I was hereâŚ!â
I have to stop itânow!
My face went pale as I ran into the forest.
Huff, huff.
I quickly ran out of breath.
Fortunately, the source of the energy wasnât far.
âThere!â
Weaving between the trees, I came to a stop in front of a small pond.
And there, standing before a monster that appeared to have been summoned by dark magic, wasâ
ââŚâŚâ
A boy, standing blankly, holding a sheathed sword.
