~Chapter 75~
ââŚ.â
âYou were here this morning too.â
âDid you fall asleep?â
Khalid deflected the question.
âIf youâre that curious, why donât you just go in?â
ââŚItâs fine.â
The boy spoke coldly, crossing his arms. Standing among the knights, he looked like he belonged there.
ââŚI donât deserve to.â
âWhat?â
âNothing. Iâll guard this place.â
Khalid turned his head away from Leviathan as if making a firm vow, his attitude showing a stubbornness that refused further talk.
âReally, all our kids are unbelievably stubborn.â
Leviathan judged that sending him away immediately would be too much, so he signaled one of the knights to take Khalid later when the time was right. The knight gave a small nod.
The couple walked upstairs to the bedroom.
Rosetta couldnât hold back anymore.
âWho is that boy?â
âRubyâs friend.â
âFriend?â
Her eyes narrowed. Leviathan asked, âWhy?â
âRubianâs male friendâŚâ
Rosetta rubbed her chin quietly. To Leviathan, the word âfriendâ was the main point. But for Rosetta⌠her mind kept stopping at the word male.
âRose, the way youâre looking right now⌠itâs scary.â
âYouâre imagining it.â
She gave him a sly smile, moonlight falling on her face.
Leviathan stared, entranced. Come to think of it⌠it had been so long since he had been alone with his wife like this. With all the chaos lately, he hadnât even properly welcomed her back.
âBut whatâs that youâve been holding since earlier?â
Leviathan reached for her hand.
âOh, this?â
When Rosetta opened her palm, a cute strawberry-shaped hairpin appeared.
âI saw it on the nightstand earlier and picked it up without thinkingâŚâ
Leviathanâs expression grew complicated as he watched her play with the pin.
âSorry.â
âSuddenly?â
âThat room.â
ââŚ.â
âI opened it without asking you.â
Rosetta stayed silent. She remembered clearly when and why she had bought that pin. She and Leviathan had chosen everything in that eastern room togetherâeven the thinnest ribbon.
âWhy apologize for something like that?â
ââŚ.â
âYou did well. I wouldâve done the same. It suited Rubian perfectly.â
She didnât know how Rubian ended up wearing the pin, but honestly, she thought it was for the best.
âAnd actually, I was planning to say this when I came back from the south. That room⌠letâs clear it out.â
âRosetta.â
âWe canât live forever tied to bad memories. Ah, I donât mean our baby was a bad memory!â
Leviathan nodded right away.
âI know.â
âI just mean⌠weâve alreadyâŚâ
A spring breeze slipped in through the window, warm like a gentle hand.
âI think weâve grieved long enough.â
Pain flickered in Leviathanâs violet eyes, but it wasnât as heavy as before. Stronger love now carried the weight alongside the sorrow.
âItâs thanks to Rubian. Sheâs eased your suffering.â
Rosetta smiled faintly.
She had thought nothing could ever fill the hollow pit of loss. But there was Liam, Boyd⌠and now Rubian, like a gift.
There is no wound that must remain painful forever.
ââŚItâs already been ten years,â Leviathan murmured.
âMaybe youâre right. Maybe we really have mourned enough.â
Though scars remained, the past no longer bound him. His daily life with Rubian was healing itself.
âWhen we return to Zerox, letâs visit the memorial together.â
He spoke calmly. Rosetta gave him a sidelong glance.
ââŚThey might be angry we havenât come for so long.â
âThen weâll just have to beg forgiveness.â
Rosetta laughed softly and wrapped her arms around his neck.
âLeviathanâŚâ
âMm.â
âRubian is so precious to me. Strange, isnât it? Weâve only known her a short time.â
She remembered Rubian crying in the hut, overwhelmed by her secret. Her chest tightened again at the thought.
âIf Rubian wants it, Iâd like to give her that room.â
Her voice trembled with tears.
âYes.â
âI filled it with the cutest, prettiest things. Honestly, I didnât want to throw them out.â
âI know.â
âLeviâŚâ She buried her head against him again.
âIâm so happy to have a daughter now.â
Her words spilled out like a broken dam. Leviathan nodded heavily. In silence, they leaned on each other, sharing warmth and comfort.
âWhy are you crying so much? You never used to.â
âTell me about it.â
Rosettaâs rabbit-red eyes lifted.
âIn the past, you cried more than me. Remember? When you confessed, you cried. When you proposed, you cried tooâŚâ
âLies.â
Leviathan couldnât take it anymore and swept her into his arms. He kissed her and whispered:
âI never cried. Though⌠whenever I saw you, I always felt like I might.â
âYou always use your body when youâre cornered.â
Leviathan rained light kisses across her face until he suddenly paused.
âSpeaking of whichâhowâs your body now?â
âYouâre the only one who doubts my health. Stop treating me like glass.â
âAlright.â
A sly smile tugged at his lips. Rosetta realized too late.
âUhâI think I suddenly feel a little sick?â
âToo late.â
His long strides carried them swiftly to the bedroom.
Rosetta clutched his neck in a panic.
âWh-why are you like thisâŚ? Your eyes are scary, Duke.â
âYou said yourselfâwhen cornered, use your body.â
âThatâs not what I meantââ
âDonât worry. Iâll take care of everything.â
The bedroom door slammed shut. Before Rosetta could argue again, his lashes brushed against hers.
This time, she had no chance of winning.
