~Chapter 59~
Huff⌠so embarrassing.
âRuby? Thatâs dangerous. Come down here.â
Dad reached out his hand, and I carefully got up and stepped down the stairs.
âItâs been a while.â
Licht deliberately walked to the bottom of the stairs and held out his hand. His other hand was tucked neatly behind his back, like a very polite escort.
âBlondie, why are you hereâŚ?â
I just stared blankly, not even thinking of taking his hand. Licht smoothly withdrew it and smiled, squinting one eye.
âYes, my hair is golden. But I also have another nameâLicht Bamilon.â
ââŚUh-huh.â
Of course I knew thatâŚ
âWe never did a proper introduction before. Iâm Licht Bamilon.â
His soft golden hair caught the sunlight from the window, shining brightly.
He seemed taller, his face even more beautiful than when we met before⌠I pushed away the useless thought and gave a clumsy greeting.
âHello, Iâm Rubianââ
But then I accidentally glanced behind him.
There was Dad, raising his eyebrows and watching me carefully.
ââŚo-of House Jebert.â
At last, smiles of satisfaction spread across Dadâs and the servantsâ faces.
Licht scratched his brow, muttering,
âWhy so formal all of a suddenâŚâ
Just then, a bespectacled face appeared between us.
âHm. So youâre Rubian.â
The eldest son of the house tilted his head and looked me over.
âWhoa, heâs tall. AndâŚâ
So strict-looking!
His sharp eyes scanned me up and down like an inspection. Instinctively, I stood at attention.
âBut no need to be scared!â
I glanced at my reflection in his clear glassesâshirt buttoned to the collar, not a wrinkle out of place, hairpins set symmetrically on both sides.
âHel⌠hello?â
I greeted cautiously. Liam Jebert narrowed his eyes and lifted his chin. Then suddenly, he clapped his hands once.
âPerfect.â
He turned to Dad.
âFather, at last, the dignity of House Jebert that was buried in the mud is being restored.â
âDonât forget youâre also a Jebert, Liam.â
But Liam ignored him. He grabbed my hand firmly.
âI like you. Come with me.â
Then he tugged me straight toward the mountain of books.
âLetâs go study.â
âWahhh!â
The sudden pull made me stumble. Liam quickly released my hand, startled.
âLiam, Rubian is not Void. You canât treat her roughly.â
Dad clicked his tongue and rubbed my wrist gently.
ââŚWhatâŚâ
Liam stared at my slightly reddened skin and his own hand, disbelief written on his face.
âIs the youngest⌠not human?â
That was all he managed to say with a serious expression. Then he leaned his chin on his hand and began circling me in the lobby.
Uh-oh, this routine looked dangerous.
âYes⌠Iâve heard there are races like that. The fairy tribe from the Eosia Forestââ
âUgh! What are you talking about!â
I yanked a book from his cart and threw it at him.
Honestly, with talk like that, who would believe he wasnât Voidâs brother?!
âMonster Encyclopedia, Volume 3? Youâve got good taste.â
âSorry, big brother! Iâm busy!â
I grabbed Lichtâs hand instead. His cold hand flinched in surprise.
No way Iâm getting trapped with a bookworm!
âI already organized the library for you, so go read to your heartâs content!â
It was a good thing I had prepared ahead, knowing Liam might come to Ipsun.
âBy the way, just follow the heart stickers on the floor and youâll reach the library with no problemâeven if you have no sense of direction!â
I proudly pointed at the heart stickers plastered all over the floor. Liam tilted his head with a strange expression.
ââŚWhat is this sudden kindness?â
He mumbled blankly, not even noticing his glasses slipping down.
Behind him, Dad sighed shortly and ruffled Liamâs hair.
âEnough. Go unpack and greet your grandfather.â
ââŚ.â
Liam lowered his chin slightly.
Had Father always been this⌠gentle?
His expression was reluctant, but he didnât push away the large hand. Of course, he still couldnât take his eyes off Dadâs shirt.
âFather⌠are you sure about that undone button?â
ââŚ.â
Oh dear. Spear versus shield again.
âLetâs go, Licht!â
âHuh? Oh, okay.â
I had to escape. Otherwise, Iâd be trapped in the study with that fussy bookworm boss!
I thought it was like with Void, where old grudges made things awkward.
Uncle seemed to think the same.
âBut isnât this just a complete personality clash?â
Thereâs no fixing that. I shook my head.
âSo you ran off in such a hurry, and all you came to was the front garden?â
Licht glanced around the mansionâs garden and asked lightly. It was the place I often visited with Titi.
Catching my breath, I answered,
âOutside is dangerousâŚâ
Who knew what could happen if kids just wandered out together?
âThatâs a good thought.â
Licht smiled softly. He reached into his pocket, pulled out a neatly folded handkerchief, and placed it on the bench.
âSit down.â
ââŚ.â
Are all royals this polite?
âBut isnât this kind of thing usually done for girls?â
I sat down reluctantly.
âIâm glad you seem to be doing well.â
âYou⌠no, I mean, why is His Highness glad about that?â
Licht squinted one eye and smiled.
âWhy so formal all of a sudden?â
âWell, before I didnât know your identity, but now I know youâre a prince.â
At least I understood that much.
But Licht seemed dissatisfied. He closed his eyes slightly and said slowly,
âBut I didnât come here as a prince.â
âSo what?â
âLicht.â
The prince sat beside me, tilting his head and whispering.
âShouldnât you call me that?â
Wow⌠he really knows how to use his face.
I edged away a little and mumbled awkwardly,
âWell⌠if thatâs what you want.â
Maybe because Iâd read the original story, I oddly felt a kind of closeness with him. That actually made things easier for me.
As I answered hesitantly, a wide smile spread across his face.
âBy the way, it looks like you get along well with Duke Jebert.â
âYeah. Well⌠heâs my dad, after all.â
âYour face looks so much healthier. Of course, Iâm not saying it was bad back then.â
âYou donât need to flatter meâŚâ
âBut itâs true.â
I had first met Licht after being sick for a long time in the capital. Obviously, I looked much better now.
He skillfully called over a maid to prepare a tea table in the garden. The servants quickly bustled away.
âDuke Jebert seems busy even here.â
He looked toward the carriages arriving in a line.
âWell, yeah.â
âStill, he makes time for you, huh? Soon itâll be the Spring Subjugation, right?â
I swung my legs and nodded.
âMm. After the Green Festival, heâs heading out right away.â
âThen the knight order must have taken in new recruits too.â
Like my childhood friend and other rookies who had recently joined.
âRight. How did you know?â
Licht smiled.
âI even got to see Grand Duke Jebert again after so long. He seems to be doing much better.â
I turned my head, staring quietly at him. The prince, smiling like a painting, was reading the coats of arms on the carriages entering the estate.
âNo other interesting things happened in Jelrox?â
Looking at the glint of his golden hair, I spoke softly.
âLicht.â
âHm?â
âWhy are you testing me?â
ââŚ.â
A short silence fell.
A tiny crack formed on his smiling face. His calm mint-colored eyes wavered for a moment.
âSeems like youâre more curious about my dad than about me⌠arenât you?â
ââŚRubian.â
âIf youâre so interested in the Dukeâs affairs, wouldnât it be faster to just ask him directly?â
ââŚ.â
âWouldnât it, Your Highness?â
