~Chapter 53~
âDid you not sleep last night?â
I suddenly asked. Khalid, with a strangely sharp face, raised one eyebrow slightly.
âI slept well.â
âNo, you didnât. Thatâs exactly the face of someone who stood guard all night.â
As I narrowed my eyes and stepped closer, Khalid quietly turned his head away.
âShift.â
ââŚâŚâ
âI changed shifts, thatâs all.â
He made an excuse.
Well, no doubt he had been playing with his animal friends.
âIâll just let it slide.â
I glanced at the little squirrel sitting neatly on Khalidâs head. The squirrel was nibbling on an acorn, then tilted its head as it met my gaze.
âHehe, so cute.â
ââŚYeah.â
âHm?â
âHere.â
Khalid quickly handed me a scroll. When I opened it slightly, it was a newly obtained blueprint.
I quickly tucked it inside my clothes so the senior knights at the training ground wouldnât see it.
âBut still⌠Maddix uncle doesnât even react to most blueprints anymore.â
âTsk, how picky.â
That was true. Lately, making magic tools had hit an unexpected obstacle.
âRuby! Itâs terrible. Ever since you gave me those thrilling blueprints, I canât get excited by normal ones anymore! My heart wonât beat! Iâve completely fallen into corruptionâŚ!â
It was Uncle Maddix, fully addicted to dopamine. Iâd managed to distract him somehow for now, but I felt like his limit would come soon.
âWe only need two more. One we can somehow make with this blueprintâŚâ
The problem was the other one.
I crossed my arms and thought.
Khalid tapped his wooden sword on the ground lazily.
âDonât rush too much. The tracking mages are quiet anyway. Oh, by the wayâŚâ
âHm?â
âA Babylon stronghold mage moved.â
Stronghold mage? My mouth opened slightly, and Khalid added while recalling.
âThatâs right, isnât it? The mages who got permission to live in other countries.â
âYeah, you remember. They exist in major strongholds, so theyâre called stronghold mages.â
âThey sure act special, huh.â
Mages usually could only live in their kingdom. But some, with the kingâs permission, could migrate to other lands.
Actually, apart from the issue of child soldiers and the kingdomâs humanitarian problems, powerful mages were respected wherever they went.
And mage troops had played a big role in the war, so even more so.
âItâs Jebert who especially hates mages. Thatâs unusual.â
Though, of course, there were reasons behind that hatred.
Anyway, stronghold mages lived in other countries, providing the magical help needed there, and helping Arcadia obtain what it neededâwhether information, goods, anything.
âSince Arcadia is an isolated islandâŚâ
That was how they kept ties to the continent.
I stroked my chin, thinking.
âBut in Babylon, werenât there only mages in the East and South?â
âHe said Eastern.â
Because Babylon had weak mana density, the number of stronghold mages was also low. And even then, only lower-rank ones handled it.
âIf itâs the East⌠then it must be that guy.â
Maybe that could even help cure Uncle Maddixâs dopamine addiction.
âBut how do you even know about an Eastern mageâs movements? Did your scouting summons return?â
âWellâŚâ
Khalid scratched his cheek and avoided my sharp eyes. My gaze narrowed dangerously.
âYouâre not overusing magic, are you? What if they find out youâre a mage and drag you back to the kingdom?â
As I spoke a little gloomily, his bluish-gray eyes flashed cold for an instant.
âThen Iâll just kill them all.â
âThere you go again, full of bluffâŚâ
Could it be⌠Khalid was going through a chuunibyo phase?
Hopefully not too badly.
âAnyway, okay! Iâll think about what to do.â
I got up, looking at Khalid who was quietly holding my wrist and sharing his mana with me.
âWhere are you going?â
âUnc⌠no, ahâtime for tea with Grandpa.â
If I missed dessert time, heâd sulk and itâd be hard later. No skipping allowed.
Khalid fastened his bracelet and straightened his back.
âHey, Ruby.â
âHm?â
âWhy donât you tell the truth about your gender?â
âWhat?â
I quickly looked around, but Khalid whispered low:
âThereâs no one here.â
âYou said youâd stay here. Forget being a mageâhow are you going to keep hiding that youâre a girl?â
His expression looked strangely uncomfortable.
âYouâll grow, you know.â
Well⌠true.
Since I came here, Iâd been growing so quickly it was surprising. Still small compared to my age (unfair), and compared to Khalid shooting up like bamboo⌠it was nothing.
âMm.â
I looked down at myself quietly. The blue lion crest of Jebert knightsâ uniform. My neat hair cut by Uncle last night.
Even if I grew, I didnât expect drastic changesâŚ
âIf I just donât take off my clothes, wonât it be fine?â
It was an objective analysis, but Khalid frowned, looking unconvinced.
âNot sure.â
His voice sounded frustrated.
âWith someone as cute as you, no matter what you do, people will notice.â
âHuh?â
âI mean, with someone as pretty as you, how could you not get found out.â
ââŚDid you just correct your words?â
ââŚâŚâ
I awkwardly scratched my cheek, embarrassed for no reason.
âLater. After I finish what I need to.â
Someday I would confess everything. But not now. Right now, I had things to do.
âThe runaway mage is known to be a girl anyway, so once I make a barrier and itâs safe, then. And alsoâŚâ
I looked far into the distance at the black Dukeâs castle and added:
âDad still canât even go to the babyâs grave because it hurts too much. He needs more time.â
I also needed time to prepare my own heart.
âHm.â
Khalid opened his mouth slightly, then closed it without saying anything.
I hurried forward, waving my hands.
âAnyway, Iâm going! Khal, train hard today! Donât fight with the senior knights!â
Khalid reflexively waved back.
âWouldnât it be worse if she gets found out suddenlyâŚâ
He muttered under his breath awkwardly, scratching his head. Of course, I didnât hear it.
Snack time!
Today, Grandpa and Void were present as wellâa rare occasion. Normally theyâd be training hard at this hour.
It must be because of the golden-lettered envelope Dad was holding.
âSo this year itâs here, then?â
âYes. At Count Camelanâs territory, Ipsun.â
âClose, huh.â
âExcuse me, Father, but may I ask what it is?â
Void asked, pushing his cake far away with a disgusted face.
Void wasnât a kid who liked desserts. Surprisingly, he ate bell peppers just fine though. Odd taste.
âItâs the Green Festival. This year itâs being held nearby.â
âOh⌠are you attending?â
âWellâŚâ
Dad, sitting at the head of the table, narrowed one eye. He clearly didnât want to.
Grandpa snatched the letter off the table.
âThe Emperor and princes are all coming? Hah! Looks like theyâll storm in if we donât attend.â
His voice was full of annoyance. Sitting back like a thug, arms on the chair, Grandpa turned to Dad.
âSon. Donât tell me you didnât attend the victory banquet in the capital? Thatâs why theyâre acting like this?â
âFather, please. Donât use such words. The children are here.â
Oops. Grandpa quickly covered his mouth. Too lateâthe words had already spread in the air.
âKids, forget what you just heard, alright?â
âTodayâs the first time we heard your voice, Grandpa.â
That Void⌠heâll do well in society someday.
Grandpa coughed loudly and shook the letter again.
âLooks like the nobles are dying to see your face! So, what are you going to do? Will you go?â
âNot sure. Do I have to?â
From what I remembered, the Empireâs Green Festival was a huge event marking the start of the year. Normally, every noble family attended.
âIt was always a stage for family rivalries, power shows, and political dealings.â
But Jebert was always an exception.
They didnât need such things. They were already the Empireâs most powerful house, the greatest sword family.
So Uncle usually didnât attend. And in recent years, there was the war.
Grandpa also skipped, citing health.
âBut not this time!â
I was determined to go.
âMe! I want to go to the festival!â
I raised my hand high. All eyes turned to me, and I shrank a little.
ââŚAh, is it not allowed? If Dad doesnât want to, then maybe I can go with the knightsâŚâ
âLeon, pen.â
âYes, sir.â
Without a momentâs pause, the pen moved.
Attending.
