~Chapter 42~
Ch.5
âSee? I knew you overdid it.â
Khalid shook his head, letting out a sound of disapproval.
âHuff, huff⊠Wa⊠waterâŠâ
Seeing Ruby pale and collapsed in front of him made the feeling worse.
âTch. Really. What are you even trying to do.â
Ruby was lying down, using Sir Leonâs cloak as a mat, breathing heavily. Khalid handed him the water bottle nearby. Ruby accepted it like holy water.
âBreathe first, then drink.â
âTh-thanks.â
âWhy push yourself? You canât even finish one lap properly.â
âMy words exactlyâŠâ
Maybe heâd gotten too confident lately.
Ruby muttered and gulped down the water.
Khalid, with his hands on his waist, looked down at him.
Rubyâs short silver hair swayed weakly in the breeze. Whoever had cut it had done it carelessly, chopping it far too short.
âHah.â
Khalid swallowed the curse rising in his throat. His eyes were drawn to Rubyâs clear lashes casting shadows over bright eyes.
Even like this, still so pretty.
âA boy? Northern people must be insane.â
Pathetic.
He thought it was ridiculous.
âThe 7th daughter of the Magic King.â
Khalid looked at Ruby wiping away sweat and remembered her true identity.
âSheâs a princess.â
He let out another hollow laugh.
âThe princess of magicians, living disguised as a boy, training as a knight.â
Of course, he knew Ruby wasnât like an ordinary princess.
Ruby had said it herself:
âThe Magic King⊠takes children with strong magic power and claims them as his own. The palace is full of âchildren of the king.ââ
âSo Iâm not really his child. Iâm more like a weapon he polished carefully. Iâm not the kind of princess youâre imagining.â
Thinking back, Khalid realized Rubyâs atmosphere had changed since the first time they met. Now she was livelier and brighterâsomething good to see.
âThatâs why I hate being treated like a princess.â
But sometimes, when she showed that self-mocking face, she looked far too much like an adult.
It made Khalid unbearably anxious.
âStill⊠to me, you seem like a princess.â
He couldnât stop himself from adding it quickly.
âAt least to me, you are.â
Bright, warm, noble.
Otherwise, how could he explain the way he desperately wanted to protect her?
Maybe this was the loyalty of a knight to his princess. Thatâs why the word âmasterâ had come out so naturally.
âWhat is someone like her doing here?â
His chest burned with emotions he couldnât sort outâanger, frustration.
Ruby seemed to be the only one unaware of how special she was.
It wasnât just her status. She was also an incredibly skilled magician. All that complex knowledge inside her small headâalready enough to make her the strongest.
And yet here she was, crawling around like the weakest.
âSeriously.â
He didnât even know where to start pointing it out.
âHaa⊠I feel a little better nowâŠâ
Ruby groaned and slowly sat up. Khalid quickly stepped behind her.
âYou shouldâve paced yourself.â
âI got excitedâŠâ
Ruby leaned against his shin like a pillar and tilted his head back, smiling faintly. Seeing that smile, Khalid felt strangely dizzy.
âLittle brat! Whereâs my little brat?!â
From far away, Grandpa came charging, raising a cloud of dust.
âI brought you an energy drink! Drink it, quick!â
Khalid chuckled dryly.
Grandpa fussed over Ruby, handing him a bubbling drink.
âWell, sheâs definitely being treated like a princess here.â
To see such a strong elder acting flustered over a kid half his sizeâŠ
âTch. Isnât Borvel here yet?!â
âItâs⊠itâs not bad enough to need a doctorâŠâ
âYou collapsed while running!â
âI didnât collapse, I just⊠gave up because I was exhaustedâŠâ
Khalid had heard about the Jebert elder. Before Leviathan Jebert, that old man was the strongest on the continent.
âDidnât he once blow up shells by throwing them with his bare hands before they could even igniteâŠ?â
His violent temper had always overshadowed his skill.
Void Jebert soon appeared, wiping Rubyâs forehead with a white handkerchief.
âRuby, what are you going to do? You canât even finish one lap.â
Though he scolded, his hands moved busily, just like at the dining hall.
Ruby flared up.
âI can do two laps on the mini training ground!â
âThatâs not even a fraction of this size!â
âDonât rub it in when Iâm already hurting!â
âPlease, whatâs there to rub in? You donât evenââ
The two argued back and forth.
Khalid looked down at Rubyâs small round head from the side.
Ruby never fought with anyone. She always acted like she didnât care.
He hated that. She looked like someone always ready to leave.
And in the end, she had left him once. So maybe he wasnât wrong.
âCome to think of it.â
The only time she reacted strongly was when something involved Leviathan Jebert.
Did Ruby always want to come here?
âHis Excellency is here!â
Finally, the man himself appeared.
All this fuss just because Ruby got tired runningâŠ
âHonestly, theyâre making too much of it.â
âRuby.â
Leviathan Jebert appeared, smelling of ink. His presence alone was overwhelming, making the knights stiffen.
Like the leader of beasts strolling casually.
He didnât look like a noble, but like a mercenary leader. Khalid knew men like him were the most dangerous.
âThat glare⊠deadly.â
His violet eyes scanned the area instantly. Khalid clicked his tongue, unsettled.
âUncle!â
Ruby didnât hesitate, holding out her hand. The Duke softened immediately, lifting her naturally into his arms.
âYou hate tiring things, so why overdo it?â
âExactly.â
âLook at you. Pale as a ghost. Not cute at all.â
âI know!â
âWhat do you mean you know.â
Tap. He poked Rubyâs nose affectionately.
Khalid watched silently.
âShe really is a treasure.â
Of course. His beloved, precious child.
Maybe that was why Ruby was here.
Forget the Magic Kingâmaybe she just wanted to be here.
Khalid thought dimly:Â Iâd actually prefer that.
âBut⊠I feel jealous.â
Seeing Ruby have another pillar to lean on.
Khalid tapped his foot against the ground, frustrated.
âStill⊠itâs been a while since Iâve seen her smile.â
A knight of a princess had to know his place.
The boy stepped back quietly, a little bitter.
That night.
After finishing training, Khalid was heading to the Orderâs dorms but changed his mind, turning toward the main castle.
He was still bothered by the conversation he had with Ruby earlier.
âThe number of tracking mages has increased.â
Khalid had reported the situation of the Kingdom.
âDonât worry. Theyâre still searching the South. The Empireâs land is hugeâitâll take time.â
âBut what if they suddenly come NorthâŠ?â
âStrangely, even the Babylon Imperial family isnât cooperating with them. The diversions are still working, so itâs fine.â
âDiversions? You mean your animal friends?â
ââŠSomething like that.â
He had been manipulating traces to mislead the tracking mages. It was only temporary, but enough to buy time.
âEven so, she looked uneasy when I said that.â
Creak. Khalid gently pushed Rubyâs bedroom doorâthen froze.
ââŠWhy are you here at this hour?â
There was already a guest in Rubyâs room.
