~Chapter 32~
The clouds moved aside, and the moon appeared. Under its light, gray-blue eyes shimmered with a mysterious glow.
âKhalidâŚâ
He grinned when his name was called.
âYeah.â
âYouâŚâ
As if bewitched, I moved again.
âI didnât expect you to welcome me like this.â
Khalid stood up naturally, opening his arms wide.
âIâŚâ
Da-da-da! Without realizing, my steps turned into a run.
And thenâ
âDidnât I tell you not to block me?!â
Whack!
My light headbutt made his body sway.
Animals scattered in fright.
âWow, headbutt is a new one.â
âItâs because Iâm a water fist! Why!â
I shook my fists, fuming. Khalid just rubbed his stomach and laughed softly.
âSniff.â
To my shame, I was the one with tears in my eyes.
My head hurt more than his body. How could a boyâs body be so solid?!
âNext time, can you at least give me a warning before charging? I used my strength without realizing. Youâre not hurt, are you?â
That stung my pride even more.
âAnd besides, youâre still on about that? It was ages ago when I blocked you.â
âSo you admit you blocked me!â
âI told youâit broke. I just said it was broken.â
âDo you think Iâm stupid?â
I growled again. Khalid, a head taller than me, stared calmly.
âSo, master. What are you doing here?â
His eyes curved gently, lips lifting into a smile.
âYou abandoned me. Pretended to be dead.â
Uh⌠now he looked angry.
I stepped back without realizing it. He suddenly closed the distance and grabbed my shoulders.
âNo. I wonât let you run anymore.â
âWait, hold onââ
âI finally caught you.â
âHuh?â
âI finally found you.â
What did he mean by that? Did I mishear? Tilting my head, I saw him smile awkwardly.
âSo what are you doing here? Of course, youâre hiding that youâre a magician. But those clothes⌠donât tell me.â
His gray-blue eyes swept over my short hair and my outfit.
ââŚNo, right?â
I scratched my cheek awkwardly. I was wearing the boyâs clothes Iâd bought from the boutique a few days agoâwell-fitted, elegant, neat.
Boyâs clothes.
âThe Duke of Jebert wouldnât have given up that badly. Right?â
âUh⌠this is just a result of some misunderstandings piling up.â
ââŚ.â
Khalid closed his mouth tightly, looking so dumbfounded he forgot to speak.
I quickly changed the subject.
âWhat about you? You just show up and cause an explosion without warning. What if you got caught?!â
âSo I shouldâve stood by and watched a monster charge at you?â
âThe knights wouldâve handled itââ
âBut I didnât get caught, so itâs fine.â
His unyielding tone left me speechless. As I glared at him, he muttered softly.
ââŚMy body moved on its own.â
I sighed.
He was always like this. Ever since I freed him from that prison cave, heâd followed me like a puppy.
Though⌠no puppy ever looked this dangerous.
Thatâs why heâd given me the Oath of Vows.
His magic was bound to mine, and I held full control. Unless I cut it, he had no choice but to remain my servant.
âWould he really die if I told him to? Why would he ruin his own fate like this?â
Well, if he ever regretted it even a little, Iâd have no choice but to release himâŚ
ââŚ.â
As I stared at him, I accidentally met the squirrelâs eyesâperched on his head, chewing an acorn.
ââŚYou really have no fear. You lured me with this squirrel from the wall all the way here.â
âWhy call it âluringâ? That sounds embarrassing.â
âWhat are you even sayingâŚâ
âI told you.â
Khalid moved his magic slightly. At that moment, the squirrelâs glowing yellow eyes dimmed, returning to normal.
âIâm the one protecting you.â
The squirrel twitched its nose in the air, then scampered away.
âDonât forget my oath.â
His lips curled into a wider smile.
âFrom the first time I met himâŚâ
No amount of dirt or scruff could hide his looks. His dark navy hair with a bluish tint, those stormy gray-blue eyes, and the two moles under his left eye.
âJust keep growing like this.â
The perfect poster boy.
âFine, I get it. Put your magic away now.â
âYouâre the only one here who can even sense it.â
Khalid tilted his head, almost sulking.
He had the power to bind and command souls temporarilyâonly animals.
He could control monsters too, but he hated the taint of their mana. As for humansâŚ
âItâs forbidden.â
Breaking that rule came with a terrible price.
âAnyway, since you keep dodging, you clearly donât want to tell me why youâre here.â
His words pierced straight into me, and my shoulders flinched.
âHow can I say it?! That this is a novelâs world, and I came here to stop the massacre ending by finding a hero?!â
I bit my lip. He gave a short sigh, then picked up his bag and sword.
âFine. Tell me slowly on the way. For now, letâs get moving.â
I blinked slowly.
âMoving where?â
âTo escape, of course. The Demon King knows youâre in Vamillon now.â
âWhat? No way, Iâm not leaving.â
My protest burst out immediately. I stepped back, and his brows shot up.
âYouâre not leaving? Then what are you even planning to do here?â
âSorry. I canât explain everything yet. But Iâm not leaving for now.â
I met his gaze firmly. His grip on the sword tightened.
âAnd what if I force you to run with me?â
âYouâve never beaten me onceâŚâ
âThatâs only because we were in mana-rich lands, master.â
âUgh, look at that smug face.â
âAll I have is mana. Did you forget?â
He raised his wrist slightly. A golden bracelet jingledâan artifact that suppressed his overflowing mana.
Even with that, he couldnât fully control it.
He was my opposite.
I lacked mana but had knowledge.
He overflowed with mana but had little theory.
âBoo, no mana flexing allowed!â
I booed, jealous.
âThere you go again, dodging with half-answers.â
He shook his head, muttering. I laughed a little and stepped back.
âLater. Iâll tell you later. So donât push me, and no more mana flexing. Just say okay, alright?â
ââŚHa.â
He stayed silent a while, then bit his lip and lowered his head.
âYouâll just dodge me again. And then abandon me againâŚâ
Huh?
I froze. His fists were clenched white, trembling. His shoulders shook faintly.
Huh??
âK-Khalid? Youâre not⌠crying, right?â
âI canât feel your mana. They said the magicians headed to Kanalan Canyon all died. Back then, what was I supposed toââ
âThey didnât die!â
The words burst out of me in panic.
âWhat?â
Khalidâs head shot up. His dry cheeks twitched. I hurried on.
âI freed them!â
His eyes widened slightly.
ââŚWhat do you mean?â
âI destroyed their mana cores. They canât use magic anymore, and their lifespans will be shorter. But they chose that themselves. Anywayâtheyâre alive!â
I waved my arms, desperate to explain.
It was my last mission.
The magicians in Kanalan Canyon had been ambushed by black monsters. It was a disaster, but also a chance.
I had planned to abandon them and run to meet Uncle Leviathan.
But I couldnât stop thinking about those young faces.
So I made it look like they were annihilatedâfaking all their deaths.
âThen those corpsesâwhat were they?â
âClay. Fake bodies.â
âYou made all that alone?â
âI didnât need to make everything. Just a few limbs were enough.â
Khalid bit his lip until it bled, then burst out:
âThen why didnât you make a fake body for yourself too?! Why let yourself be found out?!â
I stayed silent, smiling awkwardly. Of course, if I said why, heâd get madâŚ
But he quickly caught on. His lips curled coldly.
âYou did it on purpose. So they wouldnât be suspected. You made them look at you instead.â
