~Chapter 30~
Ahem, ahem! Sir Oberon, who had been clearing his throat for no reason, clapped his hands with a strict face.
âAlright! Thatâs it for todayâs training!â
A fine deputy who knew how to cover for his superiorâs faults.
I watched Oberonâs retreating back and headed toward the shade of a tree at the edge of the training yard.
âUncle. Why are you sleeping here?â
Snore, snore. A dazzlingly handsome man asleep.
âWake up!â
When I shook him, he half-opened his eyes. Nearby, scattered documents lay unfinished.
âOh, I was working.â
âLiar. You were sleeping.â
No matter what I said, Uncle stretched lazily before sitting upright.
âAll done playing?â
âI wasnât playing!â
The training had been hard.
âWhy are you doing work here instead of in your office?â
âCanât see well there.â
ââŚ?â
âCome on, letâs go get snacks.â
Uncle lifted me up with ease.
Thanks to eating well and training, I was heavier than before. My height had probably gone up too (though Boyd seemed unsure), but Uncle could still carry me without effort.
âGuess the northern air suits me?â
I felt stronger every day.
âOh, Iâm going to see the castle wall tomorrow!â
âThatâs so exciting to you?â
âOf course! Iâve always wanted to go!â
Uncleâs steady steps suddenly stopped. His violet eyes locked on mine.
âIf you wanted to go, why didnât you say so?â
âHuh?â
âWhen did you start wanting to? If youâd told me, I wouldâve taken you.â
I blinked.
âReally?â
âRuby, I told you.â
He sighed, brushing back my messy hair.
âIf thereâs something you want, donât hesitate to tell me.â
âBut I didnât want to bother youâŚâ
And Iâd already thought of a way to do it myself.
âWhy would your request bother meâŚâ
He stopped speaking. His gaze lowered, fixed on me.
âWhy are you looking at me like that?â
âBack in EosiaâŚâ
ââŚ.â
âWere you like that in Eosia too?â
I stayed silent. After a pause, he added:
âWith your⌠parents, I mean.â
âUh, no.â
I looked away awkwardly.
It was half true. I had never once asked the kingâor my parentsâfor anything.
âBut back there, I didnât want to do anything.â
And theyâd never cared what I wanted, even when I was very smallâŚ
âWait.â
I frowned slightly. My body stiffened. When I was very small?
âRuby?â
My memories didnât feel smooth. I could recall moments, but the connections felt off, like someone had stitched them together artificially.
âRuby-an!â
âAh?!â
I looked up to see Uncleâs worried face filling my vision.
âDonât think about it. Iâm sorry.â
He hugged me tightly. I blinked over his shoulder.
âHuh?â
What had I been thinking about just now?
âI made you remember something bad. Itâs my fault. Iâm sorry.â
It wasnât his fault⌠but I didnât have the energy to say more. I just buried my head in his shoulder. His warm, big hand rubbed my back.
It felt oddly familiar⌠and comforting.
The next day, I went to see the castle wall as planned.
âWow! Amazing.â
An endless gray stone wallâso thick that even a beastâs claws couldnât scratch it.
âDonât run around too much, itâs dangerous.â
A gust of wind blew my hood off, and Oberon pulled it back on for me.
âHuh?â
As I looked up at him, a tower came into view. Several towers were built along the wall at even intervals.
âWhatâs that bell at the top of the tower for?â
âThat? In the watchtower? If beasts attack or thereâs trouble, they ring it.â
âOh, like an emergency alarm!â
âAlarm? Well, yeahâonly in emergencies.â
âAre they all along the wall?â
âYes. You never know where something will happen.â
âFound it.â
The perfect place to embed the barrier stoneâand the perfect tool.
If I placed a magic stone in the watchtowerâs bell, the barrier could spread along the wall.
âAnd if someone triggered it, the bell would ring automatically!â
And if linked to my magic, Iâd know first.
Just then, a hand suddenly grabbed behind my knee.
âHa! Youâre interested in all sorts of things!â
I was suddenly lifted into the air by the old dukeâGrandpa. Heâd been following me around all morning, and now heâd joined the tour.
âWah!â
The sky felt closer from up high, and the wind was fresher.
âGrandpa, why did you come?â
âHmph! I came to straighten out the wallâs discipline!â
âOh, okay.â
âTsk. Thought youâd gained some weight, but overnight youâve turned back into a little bean.â
He glanced at me with dissatisfaction.
âUncle said that this morning too.â
Last night, Uncle and Boyd had both stayed in my room.
At this point, I couldnât deny itâ
âI must have sleepwalking.â
Otherwise, why would they guard me all night?
Still, nothing had happened, so they hadnât touched me.
âWaitâwhat if I talk nonsense in my sleep?!â
A shiver ran down my back.
Thenâ
Ding ding ding! The watchtower bell rang wildly.
Its piercing sound made me cover my ears.
âSir Oberon! Itâs an attack! A horde of beasts!â
âTsk. I thought it would be quiet for a while after we wiped them out a few days ago.â
A subordinate came running. Oberonâs expression sharpened.
âHow many?â
âThirtyâno, forty grizzlies!â
âTsk. Balok.â
âI know.â
Grandpaâs eyes flashed dangerously.
The air grew taut, making me shrink a little.
âDonât be afraid. Theyâre just small fry.â
He tightened my cloak.
âIâm not afraid.â I knew Grandpa and the knights were strong.
The beastsâ presence was getting closer. I felt their magic, but kept it hidden.
âSend the defense knights. Has the main castle been informed?â
âA messenger is already on the way.â
âGood.â
Everyone moved quickly and without panicâit seemed routine here.
âThis would be a good time to test the new arrowheads, Your Grace.â
Oberon suggested.
Grandpa, heading for the stairs down the wall, nodded.
âTest them and report back.â
âYes, sir! Now, take Ruby-an somewhere safe.â
âLetâs go.â
âPrepare the archers. Make sure they donât scatterâŚâ
Oberonâs voice faded as Grandpa carried me down the stairs.
Thenâ
KWAANG!
A deafening boom shook the earth.
âNo way!â
I jerked my head up. The beastsâ presence⌠was gone?
âChild! Donât look up!â
Grandpaâs rough hand pushed my head down. I only caught a glimpse of gray smoke rising outside the wall.
Grandpaâs shout thundered.
âWhat happened?! An explosionâdo they not know whoâs here?!â
âYour Grace! Vice-captain!â
Someone ran up in a panic.
âWhat is going on?â
âT-the beasts⌠theyâve all been wiped out!â
âWhat?â
Just as I thought.
âSomeone appeared suddenly and destroyed them allâŚâ
âWho?â
âThat⌠wellâŚâ
Grandpaâs aura turned ice-cold, the killing intent of a swordsman leaking out.
âAn enemy? Was it⌠a mage?â
The hostility in his voice gave me chills.
âI donât know. ButâŚâ The aide added hastily.
âIt looked like⌠a boy!â
This time, I couldnât stop myself from looking up.
