~Chapter 104~
He scratched his eyebrow and bowed politely.
âSorry, Rubian.â
âHuh?â
âI made a silly mistake. Didnât it make things hard for you yesterday?â
Ah, yesterday.
I quietly shook my head. Actually, it wasnât really Lichtâs fault.
âNo, itâs fine. Thatâs why you wanted to keep talking to me, right?â
âYeah. I just had too many thoughts by myself. If I made things awkward⌠Iâm really sorry.â
Everyone knows even a stone rolling on the ground that Duke Zebert hates magicians.
So Licht seemed even more troubled about what happened.
âItâs alright. I was really shocked, butâŚâ
I turned my eyes and answered.
âIt was just your misunderstanding. Donât apologize anymore.â
Licht finally smiled brightly.
âOkay, thank you.â
We chatted lightly about yesterday as we slowly walked across the garden. Licht laughed out loud at even my small words, like he was having fun.
âHe looks happy.â
Maybe because the thing bothering him is finally gone.
âButâŚâ
I glanced at Licht, then noticed a burning stare from the side and turned my head.
âWhy didnât he leave?â
Usually, the boy with zero social skills, Khalid, would have run away by now. But today, he just quietly stayed beside me.
âRubian! Over here!â
Sortie waved at us from in front of the tea table.
The tea table was on a little terrace, about five steps up, with white pillars and an arched roof.
I wanted to hurry up, so I started walking faster without thinking.
âCareful.â
Licht reached out his hand to me.
Just then, a hand came out from the other side and slapped the princeâs hand away.
âThereâs a stone.â
Khalid lightly grabbed my shoulder and pulled me towards himself.
âWhere?â
âI already moved it.â
Oh, really?
I almost trippedâŚ
I was about to say thank you, but suddenly the side of Lichtâs head started to look red.
When I looked, Licht was rubbing his hand and smiling.
ââŚYouâre reallyâŚâ
His voice sounded icy.
âRude.â
My eyelids fluttered.
What is this feeling⌠this mood?
âWhy do you always look so annoyed? Thatâs why your nameâŚâ
His nice-looking lips curved into a short smile.
âWhat was it againâŚâ
Khalid snorted.
âYouâre still as annoying as ever.â
My head turned back and forth.
Just then, Titiâs voice came from above.
âRubian! What are you doing down there?â
âOh, Iâm coming!â
Like I was under a spell, I started walking again.
Both boys followed me up the steps, but their burning stares didnât stop.
âŚWhat is with this mood?
But all those thoughts disappeared when I saw the beautiful tea food on the table.
âWow! Did you bring this from Count Carmelanâs house?â
âYes. I asked the chef a lot because I was coming hereâŚâ
Titi said shyly.
I was excited and reached out to sit downâ
âWhat are you doing? Take your hand off.â
âYou too.â
âbut then stopped.
Both boys were gripping the back of my white chair tightly.
âMove. I grabbed it first.â
âSo what? Does order really matter?â
âYes. Itâs everything.â
âIs that all youâve got?â
Licht smiled dangerously, while Khalid stared right back, his face calm.
Zap. Zap zap.
Sparks were flying on both sidesâI was about to burst!
âRubian⌠whatâs with those two?â
Sortie whispered to me. I shrugged and pulled out the chair next to Titi.
âI donât know. I guess they both want that chair.â
âOh my, boys.â
Khalid and Licht finally looked away from the chair, glancing over at us.
âBut why is Khalid talking so casually to the prince?â
And why is the prince letting him?
Are they friends or not? I have no idea.
I shook my head and reached for a tasty-looking mini tart.
As I looked around for a small plate, two shiny plates suddenly appeared in front of me.
ââŚâ
I looked up to see both boys, holding plates, staring at each other like they were ready to fight.
âMaybe you should stop jumping in all the time. It doesnât suit that cape.â
Licht spoke calmly. Khalid just snorted and pushed his plate closer.
âDonât make me have to jump in, then.â
âArenât you embarrassed to push with force like that?â
âI just pushed a little, what forceâŚâ
Khalid mocked slowly.
âWell, for the weak prince who got dragged off in Ipsenâs alley, maybe it feels different.â
âI donât know. I heard you were in a similar position back then.â
âAt least I never missed anyone right in front of me.â
âWhatâs the difference?â
âS-stoâstop it!â
I couldnât take it anymore and jumped up, spreading my arms between them.
âWhat is going on with you two? Why are you fighting like this?â
ââŚâ
ââŚâ
Zap zap zap.
âUh? Uh uh?â
âStop looking at each other like that!â
Turn your heads! Now!
I hurriedly turned their heads myself.
âWeâre not fighting, Rubian. Just talking.â
âLiar!â
Licht smiled and calmly sat down.
âI really was fighting.â
âWow. Are you proud of that?â
Khalid turned his head with an annoyed face.
How did it come to this?
âWhatâs up with Khalidâs friendships?!â
His social skills just hit minus points!
As an odd silence settled inâ
Crunch.
We all heard a tasty sound from somewhere.
âTitiâŚ? What are you doing?â
âOh my.â
Sortie put down the caramel cookie sheâd been eating. The maids around her were watching with shining eyes.
âWe just couldnât stop watching⌠Itâs more fun than the fairy tales the maids read to usâŚâ
âHuh?â
What kind of fairy tales are they reading?
Sortie just wiggled her small fingers and mumbled to herself.
âHmm. So thatâs how it goes⌠and then this wayâŚâ
âWhat arrows are you drawing! And stop stacking tarts on my plate!â
It was a complete mess of a tea time!
Stop fighting! I wish you two could go back to being strangers! Please!
Rubian shouted loudly.
âWhy are they both so noisy all the time?â
Leviathan smiled as he watched the back of his childâs head through the window. She ran out to the training grounds early in the morning, full of energy.
âYou look happy.â
A sudden voice made Leviathan jump.
âWhat? When did you get here?â
ââŚI was here from the start.â
Oh, right.
Ahem. Leviathan closed the curtain and went back to the drawing room table.
Count Carmelan stroked his beard and looked very pleased.
âSee, Your Grace? Just like I guessed, Rubian is your daughterââ
âAdolf, bring some sandwiches or soup. She skipped breakfast.â
âYes, Your Grace.â
The butler bowed politely and left.
Count Carmelan sat down, still smiling.
âTo be honest, Iâm weak for daughters too, but youâre even worse than me. I told you she looked like a girl back thenââ
âCount, drink your tea.â
Leviathan pushed the teacup toward him. The count smiled and picked up the cup.
âMy guess was rightâshe was your daughterââ
âThe taste is a bit strong. Donât drink it.â
âCanât you just admit it?â
The count finally exploded.
Heâs doing this on purpose.
Heâs acting this way just to cover up being embarrassed!
Leviathan just raised his eyebrows calmly.
âI donât know why youâre so worked up.â
âFine!â
âDo you need more work to do? You seem full of energy latelyâshould I give you more jobs?â
âThe tea is so good, Your Grace. I forgot what itâs like to enjoy tea, with all my work, haha.â
Count Carmelan complimented the tea without even tasting it.
Leviathan watched him and finally let out a small laugh. He picked up his cup and muttered,
âWell⌠sometimes, youâre actually right.â
âSee?â
The count looked up happily.
But then his jaw dropped, as if he realized something.
âSo⌠you mean Iâm wrong all the other timesâŚ?â
âThatâs your imagination. Anyway, how did it go?â
Leviathan put down his cup.
The count scratched his chin and finally spoke.
âAhem, yes. Like you said, I searched the magicianâs bedroom.â
Leviathanâs eyes instantly grew serious.
