~Chapter 9~
âWhat is this?â
âWhat do you mean?â
ââŚHell?â
âItâs my domain.â
Leviathan pressed his forehead gently against mine.
I gazed blankly over the vast expanse before us.
My short hair fluttered softly in the desolate northern wind.
âNothing but rocks?â
âI told you.â
A gloomy dust cloud rolled along.
The lordâs territory, filled with ash-gray stone walls, resembled, frankly, the ruins of a fallen kingdom.
No offense to those who lived there, of course.
The crimson-hued rocky mountains, glowing in the sunset, formed a fortress all around, from which ominous beastly howls echoed.
The blackened gorge looked like a black holeâonce stepped into, one could never escape.
âIt feels colder here, somehow.â
âThis is warm compared to winter, when snow piles up to your height.â
âUnbelievable.â
âBundle up tight.â
Leviathan chuckled and drew his cloakâs hood over me.
âDid you make ointment again yesterday?â
âOintment? Yes!â
Along the way, I gathered every Abelita herb I saw.
I upgraded each knightâs ointment, and they had been quite pleased!
âHow did you even recognize that weed as Abelita herb?â
He narrowed his eyes suspiciously.
I rummaged through my small handbag, feigning innocence.
âMy mother was a healer in Eosia.â
ââŚâ
He stiffened.
âSo I just learned a few remedies by watching over her shoulder. Read lots of herb books tooâŚâ
âYou put those shoulder-taught skills to use?â
The air grew heavy. I glanced around anxiously.
âDid I do something wrong?â
Eosia was a small nation advanced in medicine and pharmacology.
Being from there, picking up such knowledge early was normal.
âSurprisinglyâŚâ
He folded his arms and raised his chin, a slight twitch at his lips.
âYou might be a prodigy.â
âHuh?â
âThis complicates things.â
His face bore the genuine torment of a parent discovering their child is a genius⌠though why him?
And âsurprisinglyââwhat did he think I was?
âAnyway!â
He added a spiteful remark.
I spun my fists like a windmill and playfully struck his sturdy leg.
âYouâre an expert masseur too, my clever little rascal.â
He lifted me with a proud smile (why, I donât know).
At that moment, a familiar horse neighed nearby.
âYour Grace.â
It was Sir Leon. Fortunately, his injuries seemed healed; his shoulder moved normally.
âSir Leon!â
I reached out eagerly.
He hesitated briefly, then nodded subtly.
âStill a bit stern-faced.â
I knew Leon was just awkward expressing himself!
He no longer threatened to send me away.
âYour Grace, pardon me.â
Leon approached and dropped a white fur scarf into my lap.
âWow, whatâs this? So soft!â
âAlways up to something, Leon.â
Leviathan raised an eyebrow and wrapped the scarf around me, nearly suffocating me.
Control your strength! Please!
I exhaled over the white fur and peeked out.
âThank you, Sir Leon!â
Maybe a bit excessive as thanks for ointment, but refusing felt ruder!
Leonâs face remained unchanged as he glanced down.
Passing by, he muttered,
âNot âsirâ⌠call me âsenpai.ââ
ââŚExcuse me?â
âAh! Sir Leon permits that title.â
The surrounding knights reacted excitedly.
Whatâs the significance of that title?
âYouâve set foot in the land of knights, the North, so joining the Jebert Knights is the natural step.â
ââŚâ
âWe await you in the order. Welcome, youngest knight.â
Iâm a mage!
Regardless, Leon strode away, cloak billowing towards the setting sunâlike a scene from a movie.
I looked at Leviathan with a horrified expression.
âThatâs how it is?â
âPretty much.â
In truth, it was just a way to toughen me up⌠but I didnât grasp it then.
I looked crushed.
I wanted to be the youngest in the family.
Iâm not keen on being the youngest among those dark knights!
We arrived at Zelox, the northern city hosting Jebert Castle.
Passing the gates, sturdy stone houses came into view.
Though bleak from afar, the town was surprisingly lively.
âWooo!â
The people greeted the returning knights with joyful faces.
I hid shyly beneath Leviathanâs cloak, but felt the excited atmosphere.
âMy lord, we shall take our leave now.â
Jebert Castle perched like a fortress atop a hill.
Before reaching the main keep, the knights, including Sir Leon, bowed.
âWell done.â
With their commanderâs blessing, the knights moved in perfect formation.
I peeked out and waved.
âFarewell, senpai. And to all the senpais.â
After weeks together, it felt bittersweet.
âCome visit if youâre bored.â
âEven if youâre not!â
Other knights waved at me warmly.
âUm, do your family know Iâm coming?â
âThey do, right?â
The reply was lukewarm.
Watching the castleâs entrance near, I pondered Leviathan Jebertâs family.
âFirst, the late Duke Jebert.â
Balrog Jebert, previous duke and Leviathanâs father.
âNot much described in the original story.â
A distinguished soldier, he was wounded and retired from active service.
He spent his remaining days quietly in the domain.
âOthers at the castleâŚâ
Maybe Leviathanâs second son, Void Jebert.
The eldest was said to be with the duchess in the south.
âMy lord, welcome.â
Countless servants lined upâstewards, maids, footmen.
Their faces were bright at their masterâs return.
âNortherners are all rugged.â
Notably, towering maids stood outâmost easily over 170 cm.
You need that to survive here!
True to the law of the strong Jebert, rulers of a land forged by slaying beasts.
âThank you for your hard work.â
âYes, you as well.â
âIs thatâŚ?â
All eyes turned sharply to me.
Startled, I buried my face deeper in Leviathanâs cloak.
I felt like prey stumbled into a den of carnivores.
âNo, donât shrink back!â
The document was sealed!
I slowly turned to face forward.
âR-Rubian.â
Leviathan ruffled my hair.
âRubian-samaâŚâ
The maids smiled broadly, whispering.
âSo small⌠So fluffyâŚâ
âSmaller than when Void arrived.â
A red-haired maid at the front approached.
âRubian-sama, greetings.â
âYes.â
âHow old are you? Six?â
With Leviathanâs help, I dismounted the horse, indignant despite floating.
âIâm eight!â
Her eyes widened.
Leviathan chuckled and set me down.
âWatch out or youâll be eaten.â
Eight years old, huh.
What? Eight?
Really?
Whispers spread like waves.
Their reaction was a spitting image of Leviathanâs when hearing my age!
âBy the way, how old are you?â
Before leaving for the North, Leviathan suddenly asked.
âReally? You ask that now?â
âWell, better late than never.â
âIâm⌠eight.â
ââŚâ
âWhy do you look like that?â
âI thought you were six.â
âAre you crazy?!â
In truth, my body was ten.
But with the fugitive mage alert out, it was safer to lie about my age.
Being smaller than peers, no one would question it.
Still, shaving two years felt stingyâsix?
Like Iâd just been born yesterday.
I straightened my back and puffed my chest.
Standing firmly on the ground, the height difference became all the more obvious.
Surrounded by towering rocks, I felt like prey⌠frustrating!
At that moment, a furry ball rolled over from afar.
âFa-ther!â
The ball stretched out like a flying squirrel and landed before us.
âVoid.â
âLong time no see!â
A boy with shiny black hair and bright eyes smiled, his cheeks rosy.
âThat meansâŚâ
The ball was Leviathanâs second son, Void Jebert.
âHow was the capital? The victory ceremony?â
I recalled that he was an adopted child from a collateral branch.
The story said he lost his parents in the war.
His cheerful personality and the love from Leviathan and Rosetta made him a carefree boy.
Though somewhat large for his age.
Yet he seemed like a mere pup compared to towering Leviathan.
âYouâve grown so much. How have you been?â
âI havenât skipped sword training, never left food, and studiedâŚâ
Our eyes met.
His pupils trembled anxiously.
âThat oneâŚ?â
Void eyed me warily.
âGreet her. Youâll be living together for a while.â
ââŚâ
Void adjusted his fur coat and approached.
Then bluntly said,
âIâm eleven.â
ââŚâ
I tilted my head.
âBut?â
âBut⌠what about you?â
âIâm eight.â
Voidâs youthful face revealed subtle triumph.
âI finally have someone younger than me!â
âHuh?â
âWelcome, youngest.â
Didnât he just say âyounger than meâ?
