~Chapter 7~
Wait, hold on.
Whatâs going on here?
âStop it already.â
I sat at the edge of the road, holding my aching stomach and opened my eyes wide.
Did the man finally get tired of me?
âNo, that wasnât it.
The one who cut me off with a cold presence wasâŚ
Sir Leon, the blue-haired knight standing next to him â the uncleâs aide.
âHis Grace hasnât slept for days.â
He looked at me with strict eyes.
We were on the road heading north from the capital in a carriage.
I was getting really carsick â this was already the third time Iâd run out.
âUncle⌠can I ride a horse instead?â
I had asked if I could ride a horse with him instead of being in the carriage.
âWait⌠the uncle hasnât been sleeping?â
Now that I looked, he had dark circles and rough skin.
Ah, itâs my fault, isnât it?
While I was sick, my sleep schedule was all over the place.
But he was always there by my side.
Even when he left, it was only for a moment.
âItâs because I refused help from othersâŚâ
A duke himself took care of me, putting me before himself.
âThis is already the third stop, and if this continues, we wonât make it on timeâŚâ
âLeon.â
Uncle growled lowly.
âDid no one teach you when to speak and when to shut up?â
âI apologize, Your Grace. Butââ
âEnough. Move aside.â
âAh! Wait a second!â
Unable to handle the rising tension, I quickly raised my hand.
âWhat?â
âThe blue-haired uncle is right! You need to rest a bit!â
I wiggled in his arms to get out.
Huh? Why canât I move? Usually, I could jump down with a little effort.
âI donât need to rest.â
âYes, you do. Youâre tired!â
âTired?â
He snorted.
Okay, I get it.
I know. The continentâs greatest swordmaster doesnât get tired easily.
But good sleep and proper meals are basics for any human!
âDonât be stubborn. Go sleep in the carriage. Iâll⌠Sir Leon!â
ââŚMe?â
âYeah! I want to go with you. Give me a ride!â
ââŚHuh?â
For the first time, Leon looked visibly flustered.
âRuby, I can justââ
Uncle tightened his hold on me, but I shook my head.
âOkay, the tired person should rest inside, and the one who feels stuffy can ride outside!â
Perfect win-win conclusion.
âAh, I feel alive again.â
I took a deep breath of fresh air while riding the horse.
But the happiness didnât last long.
âUgh⌠itâs stiff⌠and uncomfortable.â
I tried to move a bit, but couldnât find a comfortable position.
âIt was more comfortable when I rode with uncleâŚâ
That was even cozy enough to sleep.
But it looked like I wasnât the only uncomfortable one.
Sir Leon kept shifting too.
ââŚIs this really okay?â
He sighed quietly above me.
âAnything uncomfortable?â
Everything! From head to toe!
But I just smiled and shook my head.
I wasnât bold enough to complain.
AlsoâŚ
I wanted to look good to Sir Leon.
âUncle Leviathanâs loyal right-hand man.â
I knew from the original story how truly loyal he was.
A comrade through life and death. A knight who would jump into hell for his lord.
So even if he was cold to me, I didnât mind.
In a way, we were both guarding the same person.
âWhy did you decide to come with His Grace?â
âUh⌠heâs the one who picked me up.â
âIf youâre hoping to live an easy life as the Dukeâs adopted child, better wake up.â
Excuse me? Thatâs kind of harsh to say to a kid.
Though, technically, I wasnât really a kidâŚ
âJebert isnât the paradise you think it is.â
Sir Leon was the perfect model knight â strict, cold, and by the book.
Even his perfectly ironed uniform said so.
âHeâs the opposite of uncle.â
The hero snoring in the back probably didnât even know where half his medals went.
âIs the North really that dangerous?â
âJebert was built by subjugating the land of beasts. Monsters try to take back their territory constantly.â
ââŚâ
âIt means weâre at war all year round.â
I knew that. The original setting fit the title âSword Planted on Ruinsâ perfectly.
For reference, black monsters are made by dark mages, and wild beasts are naturally formed monsters.
âBlack monsters, wild beastsâŚâ
Just imagining what uncle had endured over ten years made my heart ache.
âUm, Sir Leon.â
I shook off the thoughts and focused again.
I could feel his gaze looking down at me.
âDo you want me to go back?â
âBecause itâs a hard place for someone small and weak like you.â
Was it too much to see kindness in that?
âYou know⌠the loud guy earlier said the same thing.â
âYou were rude to His GraceâŚâ
âI wonât be a burden. Donât worry.â
I said, facing forward.
The long cliff stretched endlessly.
But I knew it would end eventually â everything does.
Even humans â with their limited lives, death is inevitable.
But if I could at least have a proper ending⌠is that too greedy?
âIâve survived this farâŚâ
Me, uncle Leviathan, and Sir Leon too.
âI wonât let your master get harmed either.â
âYouâŚâ
The veins popped out on Leonâs hand gripping the reins.
Then suddenlyâ
âUgh.â
Sir Leon suddenly grabbed his shoulder and groaned.
âHuh? Whatâs wrong?â
âItâs⌠nothing.â
But his arm was visibly shaking.
Donât tell meâŚ
âI need to get off! Excuse me! Iâm getting off now!â
âStop doing unnecessary things and stay stillâŚâ
Leon tried to stop me, sweating coldly.
Seriously, what has he been doing to end up like this?
âWhatâs going on?â
Uncle jumped out of the carriage at the brief commotion.
âUncle, Sir Leon is hurt!â
âWhat?â
âHis right shoulder!â
Uncle naturally lifted me and looked at Leon with a frown.
âLeon, is your injury not healed?â
âNo, Iâm fine.â
A short silence followed his calm voice.
Uncle sighed and stopped the whole group.
âSet up camp. Weâre resting.â
âYour Grace! Iâm really fine! We canât delay any moreâ!â
Leon was panicking like it was a huge crisis.
He looked so anxious that I blurted out,
âSir Leon⌠you knowâŚâ
ââŚâ
âThe war is over now.â
We made eye contact.
I quickly tried to explain myself.
âI just meant⌠you donât have to rush while in pain. Weâre not going to a fight, umâŚâ
ââŚâ
âWeâre going home.â
Well, not my home, but stillâŚ
Suddenly, all the strength left Leonâs body like a lie.
âYou heard her.â
Uncle patted my head and added,
âAlso, Leon. Hiding an injury from your superior is a violation of military law.â
âT-ThatâsâŚâ
Leon bit his lip and bowed his head.
ââŚIâm sorry. I wasnât thinking clearly.â
He got off the horse obediently.
âRest up.â
Uncle patted his broad back.
While Leon reflected, our knights quickly built a camp.
I was sitting comfortably on Uncle Leviathanâs thigh, watching the setup.
âHuh?â
Then something caught my eye.
âRuby, where are you running off toââ
âOh!â
I crouched in a corner of the camp.
Swaying in the wind was a rare sight â a familiar plant.
âItâs an Abelita Herb!â
A shy pink flower peeked out between jagged leaves, surrounded by a faint blue glow â the plantâs own magic.
âIt helps with bruises and pain relief.â
I reached for the herb, already knowing how to pick itâŚ
And then suddenly â smack! â my hand was swatted away.
