Chapter 34
āIf itās too hard for you, I could adjust that rule a little.ā
āIām fine. Iām not overdoing it.ā
āNo need to pretend. I saw you leaving the party out of jealousy.ā
āOh⦠maybe it looked like that,ā Damia said, nodding slowly.
āWhy are you paying so much attention to me today?ā she asked.
āIām not. Everythingās normal,ā Cassian replied.
āDid you like someone at the party?ā
āWhat?ā
āDonāt feel guilty. Iām on your side. I can even give dating advice.ā
Cassian laughed.
āDating advice? Are you serious?ā
āYes!ā Damia said confidently. āThe rule doesnāt need changing. Itās fine as it is.ā
Cassian had considered adjusting the rule to make things easier for her, but she refused firmly. She didnāt seem interested in his personal matters at all. Cassian felt a twist of frustration.
āā¦Since this engagement was your idea, donāt interfere until I die.ā
He blurted it out in a flash of anger, then worried immediately. But he thought this would make Damia honest.
āEnough! I understand. I can do it,ā Damia said firmly.
āJust donāt die too soon, Marquis,ā she added, half-teasing.
āā¦Youā¦ā
āReally, why are you like this today?ā she muttered, noticing his serious expression.
āā¦Just checking. Does it bother you that I wonāt interfere?ā she asked hesitantly.
āDonāt say silly things,ā Cassian replied, though his red eyes flickered, feeling struck by her words.
āIām really hurting inside, but I hold back so I donāt make things uncomfortable,ā Damia explained.
Cassian felt a rush of relief, hearing her honesty.
āā¦Really?ā he asked.
āYes, do you need confirmation?ā Damiaās voice trembled slightly.
Cassian quickly turned away, hiding the smile threatening to break through his lips.
They returned to the tea party in the garden.
āMarquis!ā Cassian was surrounded by other young nobles but glanced subtly at Damia.
āHe said not to interfere, yet he still worries about me,ā Damia thought, gripping her juice glass.
Cassian calmly answered questions about her health, impressing the other young nobles. The conversation shifted to the engagement, and one girl whispered that it seemed decided without Cassianās consent.
Cassianās voice cut sharply through the whisper.
āWho says it was without my consent?ā
He tilted a faint, teasing smile but spoke firmly. Damia shook her head slightly, unsure what to think.
Meanwhile, at the Marquess of Soroās house, Drury knelt on the cold marble floor, shivering in humiliation.
āI swear! I truly didnāt know!ā he pleaded.
The Marquess beside him shouted desperately.
A young man with vertical slit pupils and blood-red eyes sat at the head of the room. Even the Soro family, strong in dragon blood, felt crushed by his presence.
The man was the strongest, most cunning dragon aliveāthe ruler of all dragons.
āYou tried to kidnap a human girl and failed,ā he said.
āForgive me, Master! I didnāt know she had that much power,ā Drury stammered.
The man had tried to abduct Damia Ponti alone, but she fought back so fiercely that even he got scarred.
āHaha, youāre not even ashamed to admit your incompetence?ā
āItās my fault. I should have investigated her betterā¦ā
āAnd your treatment was sloppy,ā the man snapped, running a hand over his scarred face.
Drury couldnāt believe itāDamia, a fragile human, had left marks on the strongest dragon.
āI should have brought her to my nest already!ā the man roared, slamming the desk. The entire room shook.
The snakes around them hissed in fear. Drury shrank further.
He was notorious for his dragon bloodāpowerful and short-tempered.
āIf I had known, sheād already be under my control!ā he shouted.
āMaster⦠we couldnāt catch her safely. The Dukeās estate is heavily guarded.ā
āHaha. Let her feel fear,ā he said, stroking a snake on his arm.
āAnd if her last parent interferes, so be it,ā he added, smiling darkly in the shadows.
