Chapter 13
It was more of a puppy than a dog.
A small, black dog lay there very openly, as if it was deliberately trying to be seen.
âWait, donât go near it!â
âHuh? Why?â
âWhat do you mean why? Doesnât it look suspicious?!â
âWhat do you mean?â
Raven grabbed my arm as I was about to run forward, his expression filled with frustration as if he had a lot to say.
What, what?
âDo you⊠not realize how protected your environment is?â
âOverprotect⊠ionâŠ?â
âItâs not just overprotection level. Do you even know how long it took me just to meet you?!â
Oh, really?
âThe one who saved youâmeâsent requests for two years, and the Duke and Duchess Wentworth ignored them completely.â
I rolled my eyes as if thinking about it.
âStop pretending to think and looking away. I wonât let go of your arm. Youâll get hurt if you pull.â
âYouâre meanâŠâ
âWhatâs mean? If I let go, youâre going to run straight to that thing, arenât you?!â
âI would!â
âYou didnât hear what I said?â
âOh, I did. Iâm overprotected, and thereâs no way a puppy should be here.â
âHonestly⊠youâre strangely articulate for your age. Your pronunciation is a mess, though.â
âI donât want to hear that from you. You asked what a baby was while looking at one. You donât seem very childlike yourself.â
Raven blinked his golden eyes, as if he hadnât expected that topic to come up.
ââŠWhen a wolf is holding you, anyone would wonder if youâre really human.â
âAnyway, you knew I was a person and still asked what I was.â
ââŠâ
âLet me go. Raybun is curious too!â
âYou think Iâll let you go just because you called my name?â
ââŠNo?â
âIf I were the Duke Wentworth, that mightâve worked.â
Tch. So he wasnât as easy as my father.
Ravenâs confident smile looked like something out of a magazine photoshoot. The problem was that it looked like a childrenâs magazineâno real intimidation at all.
âBut it looks like it hurtsâŠâ
ââŠFine, Iâll let go of your arm.â
He relented after I pouted. Truthfully, it didnât hurt at all.
âWhatever that is, itâs definitely not just a normal puppy. Donât get close until someone checks it. The Wentworth Duchess has layered this garden with all kinds of protective magic, so nothing should normally get in⊠unless itâs something that wasnât affected because itâs an animal. Someone must have brought that thing here. Whatever it isâShana!â
He even knows my name, huh!
While Raven was lecturing, I dashed straight toward the puppy.
Donât underestimate someone whoâs been escaping since they were a baby.
It really is a puppy!
A black puppy, about the size of my handâwell, my hand is small, but stillâit lay on the grass.
Its ears were drooping, and more importantlyâŠ
âWhineâŠâ
âDonât touch it, Shana!â
âItâs⊠hurtâŠâ
Without thinking twice, I gathered healing clay and applied it to the puppyâs body. Oh, itâs soaking in.
The light being absorbed into its tiny body was fascinating, and I was watching it with sparkling eyes when Raven suddenly pinched my cheek from behind.
âOw ow ow!â
âDid you not hear a single word I said?â
âBut⊠it looked like it hurtâŠâ
Raven sighed and let go of my cheek.
âFearless little thing.â
âItâs just a puppy.â
âOn the surface.â
The puppy whimpered and moved, so I reached out to check its wounds.
The small black dog struggled and slowly opened its eyes. In its damp gaze were me, looking worried, and Raven, frowning in annoyance.
How did something this small get so badly hurt?
âItâs okay, donât worryâŠâ
At that moment, there was a crunch.
Huh. I got bitten.
âShana!â
âAhâŠâ
Raven reached out toward the puppy. I let out a scream without thinking.
âNo, Raybun!â
âUgh!â
âDonât touch the puppy, no!â
âTake your hand out of its mouth and talk properly!â
âIt doesnât hurt!â
Protecting the puppy, I pulled my bitten hand in and covered it with my body. I lay forward with only my upper body on the ground and turned my head back to glare at Raven.
âYou were just about to hit the puppy!â
âI was trying to pull it off. Stop being stubborn and move.â
âNo! No! Raybun, bad guy!â
ââŠYou do realize that thing is biting you, right?â
âI know! I said it doesnât hurt! It just got startled! Bad guy!â
âWho are you calling a bad guy?â
As I shouted while hugging the puppy, Raven sighed with a tired expression that didnât suit a child.
âFine. Fine, just step back for now.â
ââŠâ
âDonât be stubborn, Shana. If your father sees you like this, that dog wonât survive.â
ââŠâ
âGive me your hand, Shana.â
Who did he think I was?
But frustratingly, Raven was right. Father would definitely hate this, and clinging to it wouldnât solve anything.
The puppy whimpered, startled by how tightly I had held it.
âAh, sorry⊠Iâm sorryâŠâ
It wriggled its tiny body and escaped from my arms. I know that kind of toy. There are toys that look exactly like that.
Like those toy puppies that get pushed backward when they barkâŠ
If I could just pet that soft-looking fur once⊠The black nose was just too cute. Its glossy black fur made only its shining eyes and nose visible. Ugh, adorable.
When looking at a puppy, youâre supposed to calm yourself from the bottom up⊠wait, what was it again?
There was something about that from my past lifeâs dog knowledge, something Mr. Kang had said⊠but I couldnât remember clearly.
My friend Mina loved dogs, and we often watched animal programs together while eating. She used to send me cute videos too.
Though I rarely had time to watch them.
I loved animals too, and I had always wanted to raise a dog with Mina, but I couldnât because of my family situation. And now that I was seeing one up closeâŠ
âItâs ë돎 cuteâŠâ (Itâs so cuteâŠ)
âThat âcute thingâ just bit your finger, and youâre bleeding.â
Raven grabbed my hand and frowned.
âSmall. Very small!â
âYour hands are small too.â
âHmm, I guessâŠâ
âI can already see your father going into a rageâŠâ
âIf Raybun keeps it a secret, itâll be fine!â
âYour maids are hardly going to pretend not to notice.â
ââŠâŠâ
âYoung A-rank mercenaries hired as sittersâthatâs your family. Thereâs no way theyâll just let this slide.â
âOhâŠ?â
âIf you didnât know, forget I said it.â
What did I just hear?
âStay behind me, Shana.â
Raven gently pulled me back.
The puppy looked back and forth between me and Raven with anxious eyes. But its trembling body couldnât hide its fear.
Judging from how wary it was of people, maybe those injuries were caused by a human?
âThe puppy itself is fine. Stop worrying about your hand and heal it.â
âNo.â
ââŠWhat?â
âI said no.â
âStop pretending you donât understand. You healed that dog too.â
âIt wonât let me.â
âSo you can heal others but not yourself?â
Midway, even my head canât be cut off like that, you know? But saying that wouldnât make sense to him. I just smiled while Raven held my hand.
âYou healed it instantly, but you still gave me your hand?â
âUhâŠ?â
âAnd you touched something potentially dangerous while unable to heal yourself?!â
âItâs not dangerous, itâs a puppyâŠâ
It was so cute I could almost get a nosebleed. No need to treat it like it was about to explode.
âItâs injured.â
Raven tilted his chin as he spoke.
âAnd you still say itâs not dangerous?â
His golden eyes flashed dangerously.
âYouâre going to throw that thing away right now.â
âRaybun⊠you have no heartâŠâ
ââŠâ
âHow can you say that about such a tiny puppyâŠâ
âItâs because you got hurt.â
Ravenâs golden eyes were sharp and cold.
âYou belong to me.â
ââŠHuh?â
âI picked you up. So youâre basically mine.â
âThatâs not true.â
I have rights, Your Highness. Surprisingly, I do.
âAnyway, if you canât protect yourself, donât touch dangerous things. Understand?â
âWhatâs dangerous? Itâs just a little bite from a puppyâŠâ
He had been scolding me for being overprotected by my parents, yet he was acting the same way.
But it felt hard to be harsh with a kid like him.
Still, he was my savior.
The first person I saw after opening my eyes in this world.
âEven if it looks like a puppy, it might not be one.â
âHuh?â
âIt could be the offspring of a ferocious monsterâŠâ
Raven looked past my shoulder.
ââŠOr a beastkin.â
Following Ravenâs gaze, there was a small girl standing there.
