Chapter 08
âCute little daughter of ours. Were you curious about magic?â
âYeah! Yeah!! Are you going to show me?â
âWell, it canât be helpedâŚâ
Mother let out a small sigh. That sigh was practically a sign that she was giving in to me. I, who had been clinging to my fatherâs neck, stretched my arms toward her without caring that my body tilted.
Because of my big head, even just stretching my arms made my body tip easily toward her. Normally, Mother would have hurriedly caught me with her armsâbut this time, she didnât move at all.
Uh-oh. If this keeps up, Iâm going to fall!
A wind rose from below and pushed my body upward. Ah, ah, ahâŚ
âWaaah!â
Iâm floating!
Am I crazy?!
Iâm really floating!
But rather than feeling like my body was floating, it felt more like the wind itself was supporting me.
Either way, who cares. Iâm flying. Iâve achieved humanityâs dream! My spine tingled and my eyes snapped wide open. This is insane. So fun. Roller coasters or pirate ships couldnât even compare.
I flailed my arms and legs like I was swimming in midair. No matter how much I struggled, my body wouldnât move freelyâit only shifted according to Motherâs fingers. Then she pulled me into her arms and sighed.
âYouâre fearless. Look how excited you are.â
âShe takes after you.â
Father said, trying to hold back laughter. Mother glared at him.
âItâs not just because of me. Youâre not exactly normal either.â
âWhat do you mean? Iâm just an ordinary man.â
âAnd how do you explain the fact that you were top of the knight training corps in school?â
âThat was a long time ago.â
âAnd who still visits the knight order occasionally?â
âAre you spying on me?â
âYouâre the one who said it.â
âDonât treat me like a stalkerâŚâ
Father only shrugged, but no matter how cool he tried to act, it didnât work.
Are they really living proper public lives outside?
âSoon we should introduce Shana to the outside world.â
âSheâs only three years old.â
âBut our Shana is smart.â
Father said this as if stating something as obvious as the sun rising in the east.
I felt a little embarrassed listening.
âItâs just because Iâm a reincarnator⌠Iâm not really smart in a genius senseâŚâ
My memory was good, but that probably wasnât the standard my parents were referring to.
My vocabulary and sentence construction were likely beyond what a normal three-year-old could manage.
I tried to act like a child, but I wasnât very thorough about it.
If a reincarnated adult truly acted like a baby, that would be more of a problem.
âWe canât keep Shana locked up forever. You know that. Weâve already received thousands of letters from your family.â
ââŚThatâs true.â
âI understand you suspect your parents because of that incidentâŚâ
âI donât suspect my parents. Itâs just that we donât know what might be hidden there. So I donât want to go to the estate.â
âSo you do suspect them, donât you?â
âItâs different. I believe in their innocence.â
âWhat about your relatives? Your siblings?â
ââŚ.â
I blinked. Motherâs green eyes flashed coldly. Who would believe a claim of innocence after seeing those eyes?
Ah, right. The one who tried to abduct me was my motherâs former nannyâŚ
I heard the culprit disappeared afterward. But that was just what I was toldâno one knows what really happened. Somehow it doesnât feel like they would have just left it aloneâŚ
âWe canât keep Shana locked inside the manor forever.â
âI donât want outsiders approaching her.â
âSo you plan to keep Shana locked away for life?â
ââŚ.â
âShe needs friends her own age.â
ââŚ.â
âBesides, His Highness the Prince keeps saying he wants to meet her.â
Ah, that blond kid. What was his name again? Raven?
âHis Highness is our benefactor.â
âI know. We can allow his visits now. Shana is old enough, and the barriers are strong enough.â
ââŚEven so, you still suspect them. The Prince will be pleased, though.â
Over the past two years, I wondered how Raven had grown. I listened closely with sparkling eyes, holding my breath. Mother noticed and sighed helplessly.
âLook at Shana. Sheâs understanding everything we say and reacting so brightly.â
âWhose daughter is she?â
âMine.â
âSheâs my daughter too.â
âYou two had her together, yet you still argue over thatâŚâ
âShana, letâs go to the garden. Iâll show you lots of interesting things!â
âAnais, letâs go to the training ground.â
âI wonât show her anything dangerous.â
âIf weâre doing it, we should do it properly.â
âAlright then.â
Mother lifted me and kissed my cheek. Father kissed my other cheek. Then the two of them lightly kissed each other above my head.
What a loving coupleâŚ
âWeâll probably have a sibling soon.â
I blinked and smiled.
âShana wants a little sister.â
ââŚ.â
ââŚ.â
I miss Mina.
âShield.â
As Mother extended her hand toward Father, who was holding me, a transparent barrier formed in front of my eyes.
This is insaneâŚ
It looked like movie special effects. Magic is incredible. So cool.
I reached out toward the shimmering barrier, but my short arms couldnât reach it.
As a test, I threw some healing clay through itâand it passed right through without being blocked. So it only blocks harmful things?
Did they really want to protect me this much?
I watched Mother quietly as she cast layers of protective spells in a language I couldnât understand. Even though she was the one showing off magic, she seemed strangely anxious.
âAnais, donât overdo it. Youâll run out of strength before you even show everything.â
âDonât underestimate me. This much is nothing.â
âI know how capable you are.â
âThen just sit there and watch.â
Mother said sharply.
The more I saw her, the more unexpected she feltâŚ
With such a slender body and beautiful face, she was stronger than anyone here. It was so impressive I might fall in love all over again.
âYour Grace, I will join you.â
âLord Lloyd.â
âGood day, Lady Shana. You are as lovely as always.â
A large man with a friendly face approached. I recognized himâat first I thought he was just a manor guard.
Apparently, his main job was protecting the estate, so calling him a âguard uncleâ wasnât exactly wrong.
âGo over there.â
âI would also like to enter the barrier. What if debris flies and I get hurt?â
âYouâre wasting your build. Are you afraid of something like that?â
âEven big bodies feel pain.â
Lloyd said confidently. True enoughâno one is immune to pain just because theyâre big and strong.
âThen move back.â
âNo. I wonât be able to see.â
âYouâre quite the complainer. Why ask if you wonât listen at all?â
âIâm reporting to you since you are my lord.â
âTch. Shana, donât look at people like that. Just look at your mom and dad.â
ââPeople like thatâ⌠thatâs harsh. You know how much I care for Lady ShanaâŚâ
âGo see your own children.â
âTheyâre already grownâŚâ
âIâve heard theyâre only a couple years older?â
âBoys grow fast.â
Lloyd laughed loudly. Father frowned and covered his ears, as if he couldnât stand the noise. On impulse, I copied him and covered my ears too.
Father smirked.
âSee? Even Shana doesnât want to hear your laugh.â
âI donât wanna!â
ââŚLord ShanaâŚâ
The big bear of a man looked like he might cry as he covered his mouth.
âLady Shana, you wound me⌠this loyal subjectâs feelingsâŚâ
âYouâre not her knight.â
âWell, true. But Iâll raise my twins well and make them her knights. Theyâve been waiting to meet her.â
âYou should ask Shana first.â
âTheyâll be useful. I guarantee it.â
âIf Shana doesnât need them, then she doesnât need them.â
I watched their playful argument and quietly smiled. Lloyd grinned.
âOf course, it all depends on Lady Shana. No pressure. If theyâre useless, just discard them.â
âWhat a cruel father.â
âIâm confident in them.â
âYouâre not doing your actual jobâŚâ
âMy job is guarding the manor and Your Grace, so Iâm doing it now.â
âTch, smooth talker.â
Even while clicking his tongue, Father didnât actually chase him away. He just tightened his hold on me.
âIâll invite your twins to Shanaâs birthday this time. Bring them.â
âReally?!â
âWe canât keep Shana hidden forever.â
âThatâs a difficult decision.â
âI donât want to expose our precious Shana to the harsh worldâŚâ
ââŚI understandâŚâ
âIf anyone has eyes, theyâll see how pretty, smart, and adorable she is. Then theyâll surely want herâŚâ
âWe canât allow that.â
Their conversation was starting to head in a strange direction.
Before Father could say anything more absurd to Lloyd, I tapped his arm loudly.
âDaddy! Daddy! Look at Mommy!â
âI am watching, Shana.â
ââŚdonât look at meâŚ.â
âI am watching you.â
âUncle Lloyd too⌠look forwardâŚâ
âI am looking forward, Lady Shana.â
Only donât look at me⌠just look forwardâŚ
