Chapter 04
āPost a notice. Weāre hiring a healer.ā
āYes, Your Grace.ā
Conrad was a bit surprised at Cainās sudden order, but quickly responded. After all, it was often hard to read his masterās intentions.
āAlsoā¦ā
Cain paused, as if he were thinking. Then he continued:
āIf the pink-haired girl comes to the estate, report to me.ā
āUnderstood, sir. Any other distinguishing features?ā
āHmm⦠her hair is fluffyā¦ā
Fluffy? Conrad blinked. He didnāt expect the word to come from Caināit sounded strangely cute, even from him.
Cain didnāt care what unholy thoughts his steward might have. His mind was oddly restless. Every time he thought of her face, an image tried to form but wouldnāt.
Squirrel? That was close, but no⦠something softer, more velvetyā¦
āA squirrel?ā
āYes?ā
Cainās satisfied murmur revealed it: the soft, slightly curly hair reminded him of a squirrelās tail.
āAnd her faceā¦ā
Her wide eyes, scolding him like a child without knowing who he was. Truly a bizarre woman. He couldnāt help but smirk.
āShe looks like a squirrel.ā
Fearless, bold, and utterly unrestrained.
Conrad tilted his head. āExcuse me⦠a squirrel?ā
He tried imagining a pink-furred squirrel, but only got more confused. Cain, however, didnāt explain further. He simply went on his way, acting as a typical, indifferent Dragon Blood.
The next day.
āOh? It was true, huh?ā
I rubbed my eyes at the notice plastered on the ivy-covered wall:
[Ashlern Ducal Estate is hiring a skilled healer.]
It hadnāt been there yesterday. Overnight, a new notice appeared, exactly as Cain had predicted.
āIf I meet the requirements, thereās no reason not to apply.ā
As I read carefully, Catherine next to me gasped.
āHuh? The dukeās estate is hiring? Iāve lived here for ten years and never seen this before!ā
Catherine was a friend I made in the village. Being around the same age, we often visited her mother in Heyron.
āWow, no recommendation letter needed? They must be in a hurry.ā
āYeah⦠did someone quit suddenly?ā
Even for hiring a maid, noble families were strictābackground checks, introductions, everything.
But hiring a healer like this? It was quite unprecedented.
āI could applyā¦ā
The Empire had a healer qualification exam. It tested basic medical skills and potion-making. After passing, one could become a physician treating people, or a pharmacist studying medicines more deeply, like me.
āMost choose to be physicians, but technically, Iām a healer too.ā
Lost in thought, Catherine clapped excitedly, looking at me expectantly:
āWell, this is perfect! Youāre going to apply, right? You came for a job!ā
āI will, but donāt get your hopes up. Itās a tough position.ā
The estateās personal healer. My limited experience made it nearly impossible.
But I didnāt feel discouraged.
āIt doesnāt matter!ā
My real goal wasnāt the jobāit was meeting Cain. Even if I failed, I had nothing to lose.
Catherine patted my back, misreading my mood.
āWith your skills, of course youād get it! Remember last year? You cured my motherās chronic illness completely.ā
āThat wasnāt serious. Anyone couldāve done it.ā
She shook her head.
āAh⦠geniuses, always too humble.ā
Even Melody, quietly listening, shook her head in agreement.
āMelody, donāt you think Auntieās right? Your momās amazing!ā
āUu!ā
Melody puffed out her chest, beaming.
I laughed, and Catherine pushed my back seriously.
āNot the time to laugh. Iāll look after Melody, so go apply quickly.ā
āHuh? Right now?ā
āGood positions get filled fast. Donāt underestimate the job market.ā
āUu!ā
Even Melody, clueless about the job market, nodded in agreement.
A short while later, I took my documents and headed to the estate.
āThe timing couldnāt be better.ā
The Ashlern Ducal House didnāt really need pharmacists or physicians. Dragon Blood granted them regeneration and healing far beyond ordinary humans.
āThough that doesnāt make them invincible.ā
Some rare conditions still required medical expertise. A personal healer was truly unexpected.
āLucky me.ā
All thanks to Cainās earlier tip. If I met him again, Iād make sure to thank him.
āā¦I wonder who he really is.ā
If he were just an ordinary monster hunter, he wouldnāt know the estateās affairs. Could he be a knight? The Ashlern Silver Dragon Knights were famous for hunting monsters across Winterwald and the Empire. If he belonged to them, everything made sense.
Then I noticed something odd.
āHuh?ā
I couldnāt recall his face clearly. His striking features, which I remembered, seemed foggy, as if hidden behind mist. Even his voice was gone, like magic had erased it.
āMaybe I was nervous.ā
Still, something felt off.
I quickened my pace and arrived at my destination.
āWow.ā
The estate was more like a massive fortress than a mansion.
āNo wonder itās called Ashlern.ā
I heard their library alone could fill volumes beyond an encyclopedia.
The ornate architecture was breathtaking, yet intimidating. The guards at the iron gates made me shrink back slightly.
āBut no turning back now.ā
I clenched my fists and approached the main gate.
āAh, helloā¦! Iām here to apply as a healerā¦!ā
The guardsā piercing gazes made me feel guilty, though I hadnāt done anything.
They whispered among themselves, their faces fierce.
āSeems right?ā
āDefinitely.ā
What? Did I do something wrong? I hadnāt even caused trouble yetā¦
āPlease wait here. Someone will guide you in shortly.ā
āAh, yes! Thank you.ā
Relieved, I nodded. The guard went inside, fetching a well-dressed attendant.
āDeliver this to Conrad quickly. The pink-haired⦠ah, yes, the āsquirrel girlā is here.ā
āExcuse me? Squirrel?ā
āExactly! Hurry! By order of the duke!ā
I took a deep breath as I watched the attendant guide me inside.
Through tall corridors, we finally reached a reception room.
āThe interviewer will be here shortly. Please make yourself comfortable.ā
āThank you.ā
The room was more luxurious than outside, but I barely noticed. Nervousness consumed me.
āI have to do well⦠hope the dukeās aide comes. Then I can request to see him.ā
I rehearsed greetings and polite conversation in my head, fidgeting with my fingers.
The door clicked open. I froze.
Before me stood someone I never imagined:
Silver hair shimmering like moonlight, neatly swept back, a cold forehead beneath it. Eyes red as blood.
His face was beautiful yet inhumanly so, sending chills down my spine.
āNo doubt.ā
Cain Ashlern.
The man who, in the original story, would be Melodyās father.
For some reason, the main character of the original work had appeared in person.
