Chapter 10
âWhat did you say?â
I jumped up and pushed past Amy, running out of the bedroom.
As I rushed toward the study where Leon was supposedly studying, I thought about our relationship before I left for the temple. We had been doing okay, hadnât we? At least, it looked that way on the outside. So what changed? Why am I running like this?
I realized I was afraid everything I had built with him would fall apart.
âIâm sorry, but we were ordered not to let anyone in.â
âWhat? Iâm Leonâs wife. I outrank all of you.â
Leonâs guards were blocking me in front of the study. I had a good idea why, but I wasnât going to back down. I already suspected what Leon was âstudyingâ inside. The person with him, Sir Brook, didnât seem smartâhe just had muscles.
âIâm sorry,â the guards kept repeating without even thinking of telling Leon I was here. They wouldnât budge, no matter how much I begged or threatened them.
Just as I was about to turn away in frustration, I heard the study door open. Sir Brook peeked his head out to see what the noise was.
âMy lady, good day to you,â he said confidently, though he looked nervous.
âLeonâs inside, right?â
âYes, but⌠the master said he doesnât want to see you. Iâm sorry. Please leave now.â
Just as Brook was about to close the door, I threw myself forwardâand the door swung open as I rolled inside. The guards quickly shut the door behind me.
Really? They closed the door instead of helping me up?
As I got up and looked around, I understood why. This wasnât an ordinary study. It was hugeâlike a training arena. Definitely a suspicious space for any outsider.
Leon was sitting shirtless in a chair, wiping sweat from his body. He froze the moment he saw me. My eyes stopped on his well-built chest. At that, he jumped up and hid behind the chair.
Brook ran to hand him a shirt.
Just as I thoughtâhe was really fitâŚ
âUwaaah! Bell-bell, youâre so mean!â
Leon shouted while struggling to put on his shirt. His flailing arms left me stunned.
Should I pretend nothingâs wrong? Wouldnât that be more suspicious?
âLeon, what were you doing here? And why is this room so big?â
ââŚP-Playing hide and seek?â
That voice⌠even he didnât believe it. But fine, Iâll let it go just once.
âWell, this place is perfect for that. But sweating this much? Thatâs too much. I came back after a whole week, and you didnât even come to welcome me?â
Leon slowly stood up from behind the chair.
âDo you really not know why?â
My heart dropped. Did he find out the truth?
He took a step toward me, and it felt like his red eyes were piercing through me.
My heart pounded harder.
âYou went to the temple without me!! Leonâs mad!! Iâm not playing with Bell-bell anymore!â
ââŚâ
Seriously, this kidâŚ
I felt instantly calm again.
âLeon, youâre still upset about that?â
âBut Bell-bell turned into a cactus!â
I couldnât tell him I lost my appetite from stomping around the temple having tantrums.
âI was so worried about whether you were eating properly that I couldnât even eat well myself. Thatâs why I wanted to have dinner with you as soon as I got back. But fine. Iâll just go back to my room and skip dinner until your anger goes away. Enjoy your hide and seek.â
âNooo! Bell-bell!â
âYour Grace, Iâll leave you two alone,â Brook finally spoke. He looked like heâd been dying to escape. Leon gave him a sharp look, and Brook quickly ran out.
âLetâs eat dinner together. Iâll ask them to make your favorite⌠um, a huge steak!â
âJust because I enjoyed a few pieces doesnât mean you have to go overboard.â
His words were kind of pointed.
âHm?â
âYouâre not still mad at me, right? I became all prickly just to pray for you for a whole weekâŚâ
âUwaaah, sorry, Bell-bell! Leon was bad! Leon is a bad guy!â
âHey! Donât say that. Leon is a good boy. Itâs okay.â
I patted his back. Since I kindly forgave him, we ended up having dinner together.
We gave the order for dinner, then went to the sitting room where I got to enjoy Leonâs drama that had built up over the week.
âOh right, I have a gift for Leon! Heâll be so surprised!â
I told Amy to bring the sword I had kept. Amy looked unhappy. She clearly hated touching the dirty thing again.
She handed it to me with a grimace, and I took it with both hands, smiling brightly as I gave it to Leon. But he just stared at it with a blank face, not accepting it.
âLeon, I met someone at the temple while praying. I was kind to them, and they said they wanted to gift me this sword.â
âA sword?â
Leonâs eyes sharpened at the word.
Niceâheâs interested. Heâll be even more surprised soon. I barely kept from smirking.
âYes. Itâs supposed to be a really good sword. They say it has the goddessâs divine power and works best for the right person.â
ââŚBut itâs dirty.â
Leon frowned, not even knowing what it was. I ignored him and kept going.
âEven I, who knew nothing about swords, could tell it was amazing. But I couldnât just accept it for free as the Duchess, right? So I gave them a promissory note for 10 Solas in my name. Great deal, right?â
Leon rubbed the back of his neck and looked up.
ââŚYou got scammed, didnât you?â
He whispered it, but I heard it clearly.
Go ahead, complain.
I unwrapped the cloth to reveal a plain black scabbard. I drew the sword. The sharp blade gleamed with a holy light.
I looked proudly at Leon.
âŚHuh?
Leon was staring at the sword, shaking all over.
I narrowed my eyes. His reaction was intense. Maybe I underpriced it. With that face, I couldâve asked for 50 Solasâor more. My big mouth ruined it.
Leon looked like he couldnât wait to grab it.
âDonât go swinging it at people, okay?â
âOf course not! Bell-bell, youâre the best! Sword fights sound fun!!â
âOh, wait. I think I made a mistake. I gave them five promissory notes of 10 Solas each.â
Still staring at the sword, Leon nodded.
With a bitter face, I handed him the sword.
Ugh, maybe I shouldâve said it was ten notes of 50 Solas.
* * *
MeanwhileâŚ
âDonât you think this is suspicious?â
âVery suspicious.â
Leon replied automatically, still staring at the sword on his desk in disbelief.
âMy lady isnât a saint. Even if she was nice at the temple, who just gives away a holy sword like that? Especially one that no oneâs seen before?â
âMaybe she met the goddess?â
âDoes the goddess take money?â
âWhat did Amy say?â
âShe said the lady wandered around on her own most of the time, so she couldnât really keep track.â
Leon chuckled in disbelief.
âItâs not like itâs the legendary sword Aisar or anything⌠though I guess strange things can happen.â
