Chapter 5
He stood in the center of the banquet hall and suddenly began to cry out loud.
People, shocked by his behavior, froze and stared at himāthen screamed and stepped back.
I pushed through the crowd and stood in front of him.
Water had pooled at Leonās feet. Drops were falling from the ends of his pants.
āDid you pee yourself?ā
I blurted out in shock and quickly covered my mouth.
Then I grabbed him and looked around, trying to find someone to help.
The faces around us changed from shock to mockery. I could hear people trying to hold back their laughter.
āYour Highness.ā
The Marchioness handed me a robe that looked like the Marquisās.
I wrapped Leon in it and quickly left the banquet hall. She followed behind.
āIāll go on ahead.ā
The Marchioness gave a nod.
We got into the Marquisās carriage.
Inside, Leon looked nervous, biting his lip and clenching his fists tightly.
āLeon. Itās okay.ā
But he didnāt say a word.
When we arrived at the Marquisās estate, Leon didnāt go into the mansion. He walked straight toward the garden.
I followed him, but he shouted,
āDonāt come!!ā
His voice was so firm that I stopped right where I was.
Whatās going on with him?
A while later, Leon returnedāand his hands were a mess.
āLeon!! What happened to your hands?ā
I cried out in shock.
āThey hurtā¦ā
He stumbled and collapsed into my arms.
Thankfully, the servants, who had come out when they heard we had arrived, helped move him to a guest bedroom.
What happened?
Why did Leon suddenly act like that?
While the servants washed and changed his clothes, I sat and thought deeply.
Everything had been fine at first⦠When did it start going wrong?
We greeted the nobles, sat down⦠and then both of us felt hot. Both of us?
Even now, I still felt feverish, like I was tipsy from alcohol.
What was itā¦? Somethingās trying to come back to meā¦
Then I rememberedāthe chocolate the Marchioness had given us.
That damn chocolate.
We ate it together before the banquet.
Leon had eaten a lot. I only had a little.
What if there was something like a stimulant in it?
I remembered how anxious and out of control Leon had seemed.
Everything we had worked for almost came crashing down.
But thankfully, he managed to come to his senses for a momentājust long enough to make a scene and get us out of the banquet hall.
And now, I felt a deep rage at the Marchionessāsomeone Iād thought might actually be on our side.
āThe wounds arenāt serious. Iāve applied ointment and wrapped them up,ā said the Marquisās family doctor before leaving.
I sat beside Leon, who was lying quietly on the bed.
I gently brushed back the hair that had fallen over his face.
āStill⦠you really peed in public? How were you going to deal with that later?ā
I looked at him for a moment, then stepped out into the sitting room next to the bedroom.
I wanted to check the chocolates on the tableābut they were gone.
āWhere are the chocolates and candies that were here? Leon might ask for them when he wakes up.ā
āOh⦠I threw them out earlier. Iāll go get more.ā
āNo, itās fine.ā
In the end, Iād never know what the Marchioness had put in those chocolates.
Still⦠I guess it couldāve been worse. A hollow laugh slipped out.
I sat on the sofa in the room, watching Leonāthen ended up falling asleep there.
I felt warmth, softness, something firm but cozyā¦
Suddenly, something felt off, and I opened my eyes wide.
Why the heck was I sleeping in Leonās arms?!
I shot up and looked at him in shock.
Leon was staring at me with bright, wide eyes. The bedroom was glowing with soft morning sunlight.
āWhy am I lying here like this?ā
I jumped up, laughing awkwardly.
I mustāve fallen asleep on the sofa and, without realizing it, crawled into a more comfortable spot.
āBella is bad, a wolf. You said all women are wolves, and now youāre the wolf!ā
Leon pulled the blanket up over his head and shouted.
Is he insane? Seriously?
I felt wronged and angryābut then I looked at Leonās bandaged hands, tightly holding onto the blanket, and my anger quickly turned into pity.
āLeon, is your hand okay?ā
āDonāt change the subject. Youāre a wolf.ā
Seriously?
āBella, yesterday⦠I got really, really angry. I wanted to destroy everything. I even wanted to destroy that pigās house. But Iām okay now. Hehe.ā
Leon grinned brightly, lowered the blanket, and sat up.
āYou held it in well. Letās write that down as a record.ā
I walked over and patted his head.
āBut do you remember calling me Bella yesterday? I think thatās the first time you said my name properly.ā
āI did? Me? Do you like Bella more than Bell-bell? Then Iāll just call you that from now on!!ā
His flustered face almost made me laugh out loud.
āNo, I like Bell-bell more.ā
I quickly wiped the smile from my face.
āCall the servants and wash your face. Iāll go visit my parents real quick. I didnāt even get to greet them properly after last night.ā
āOkay, come back soon.ā
* * *
Leon let out a deep sigh as he stared at the door Bella had just left through.
He looked down at the bandages wrapped around his hands. Then, when one of the older servants, John, entered the room with others to assist him, Leon signaled him with his eyes.
āThe waterās cold now. Bring me warm tea and some fresh washing water.ā
John checked the temperature and gave instructions to the others.
āYes, sir.ā
Once the other servants left, John came closer. Leon said to him:
āWe need to look into what happened yesterday. It felt like a stimulant.ā
āIāve already called for Stevan.ā
Stevan had stayed behind in the capital, cleaning up his identity, and was working as an informant while Leonās people moved to Aster. Leon had been getting updates through him.
āYesterday, all I did was drink tea and eat chocolate with the Marquis and Marchioness⦠thatās it. Chocolate, yeah.ā
āIf the lady was involved⦠will you be okay with that?ā
Suddenly, Bellaās worried eyes flashed in Leonās mind, along with the memory of what he did in the middle of the banquet hall. That scene was the strongest move he couldāve made to escape⦠but still, it had crushed his pride.
His face turned red with embarrassment.
What would Bella think if she ever found out he wasnāt some fool?
His mind went blank at the thought. He squeezed his eyes shut, trying to calm himself.
āBella was never part of my plans for the future⦠So why do I care so much?ā
He shook his head firmly.
āIf sheās involved, then sheās involved. Thatās it.ā
āYou seem to be getting along with the two nobles recently.ā
āDonāt talk nonsense. Hey, throw that water on me.ā
Leon pointed at the washbasin. Without hesitation, John dumped the water over him.
John always obeyed Leonās orders instantly. Though he now acted like a friendly old servant, he had once been the captain of the emperorās secret guard.
āJohn! Gently! I didnāt tell you to soak me that hard!ā
Leon clicked his tongue and shook off the water from his hair, then bolted out of the bedroom.
John shook his head as he watched Leon run off ridiculously.
āHeās secretly enjoying all this, isnāt he?ā
Leon ran down the hallway with loud, clumsy steps.
āYour Highness, the Archduchess went to the Marchionessās room,ā a maid said as she stepped aside for him and bowed.
Leon ran even faster and arrived at the Marchionessās room. Before the maids outside could stop him, he flung the door open. He never cared about appearances.
āNo, Iām telling youā!ā
The Marchioness, who rarely raised her voice, shouted and looked stunned when Leon barged in.
Bella was already there, standing and staring at the Marchioness.
When she saw Leon come in, her angry expression softened, and she approached him.
āLeon, whatās wrong?ā
āI spilled the wash water. Because Bella didnāt help me wash, I got mad and dumped it all. Iām angry.ā
āThen letās get you changed right away. Youāll catch a cold.ā
John and the other servants came running after him.
āIām sorry, my lady. Sir. Letās go back to your room now.ā
āLeon, Iāll come soon, so go change first. If you catch a cold, Iāll feel bad.ā
āā¦Okay.ā
Leon held tightly onto the robe John had wrapped around him and kept glancing back at Bella as he left the room.
From that little scene, he figured out a few things:
Bella didnāt seem involved in what happened, and it looked like she had been questioning the Marchioness.
Strangely⦠Leon really liked that.
