Chapter 07
Despite making a bold escape, I ended up completely lost.
âWhat kind of castle is this huge?!â
According to my plan, I shouldâve already made it to the main building of the ducal castle and been leisurely shopping by nowâŚ
But instead, I was still wandering around, unable to even leave the annex.
Just thenâ
âElda, did you hear the news?â
Voices drifted over from somewhere. They sounded like young maids.
âHm? This kind of setupâŚ?â
Pressing myself against the wall, I quietly crept toward the source of the sound.
âIn situations like this, eavesdropping is the rule.â
When I reached the voices, a large kitchen came into view.
It was where meals for the annex were prepared, and inside were two maids.
âThe maids working in the main building said the merchant head arrived this morning.â
âAh, the one whoâs been trading with our duchy for years?â
âYeah. They brought a whole yearâs worth of supplies for the North, and apparently the caravan just kept going and going.â
âWell, that makes sense. Itâs a massive deal that only happens once a year, all the way from the capital.â
âUgh, seriously. If we worked in the main building instead of this dumpy annex, we couldâve seen all sorts of rare items.â
At the complaint, the maid called Elda laughed.
âDonât say that. I heard those merchant people are very difficult to serve. The maids last year and the year before had a hard time.â
âOh come on, whatâs a little hardship? If you play along and get some leftovers from it, itâs worth it~!â
âI still prefer the annex. Itâs quiet and peaceful.â
âYouâre weird. Whatâs so good about serving that illegitimate young master in this gloomy place?â
ââŚExcuse me?â
I swung an imaginary fist at the back of her head.
âShould I just go punch her?â
âMarie, you shouldnât talk about the young master like that.â
âWho cares, itâs not like anyoneâs listening. Ugh. The top floor of the main building must be packed with rare goods right now. The skilled servants have probably already swiped a few. Iâm so jealous!â
ââŚWhat did you say?â
My eyes widened.
Packed with rare goods?
And the servants might have already stolen some?
Unacceptable.
âI havenât even stolen anything yetâhow dare they?!â
I shouted without realizing it. The maid, Elda, turned sharply toward my direction.
ââŚHuh? What was that just now?â
Oops.
I quickly ducked my head and pressed myself flat against the wall.
âI am a wall. I am air. I will not be detected.â
ââŚI mustâve imagined it. Sounded like a mosquito.â
âA mosquito? In this freezing cold? You mustâve misheard.â
ââŚI guess so.â
âPhew. That was close.â
Still crouched low, I quietly crawled out of the kitchen.
Whooooshâ
âA-achoo!â
The sharp, icy wind made me sneeze helplessly.
âUgh, itâs so cold! SniffâŚâ
Shivering, I pulled my hood tighter and peeked again through a window into the guest room on the top floor of the main building.
ââŚThis is way worse than I expectedâŚâ
ââŚBut stillâŚâ
ââŚI want to go homeeeâŚ!â
Inside the guest room were three people, easily identifiable at a glance.
A man wearing a luxurious fur robe and colorful gemstone ringsâthe Noel merchant head.
Beside him, a middle-aged woman in a flashy fur coat pacing anxiouslyâhis wife.
And on the floor, a child rolling around like a spinning top throwing a tantrumâtheir daughter.
All three of them looked plump and glossy, completely out of place in the bleak northern atmosphere.
âAlright, letâs seeâŚâ
Pressing my forehead to the window, I carefully scanned the room.
In one corner of the enormous, lavish guest room were rows of expensive-looking clothes and accessories.
They were probably this seasonâs goods, meant to be sold to the Grand Duchess and northern nobles.
âPerfect. Thereâs got to be at least one outfit that suits Sion.â
Clicking my tongue, I began looking for a way inside.
I tried pushing the windowâno luck.
âHm⌠should I just break it?â
But that would definitely draw attention.
âWhat do I doâŚâ
Just thenâ
Knock knock.
A loud knock came from the door.
The merchant couple quickly straightened their clothes.
âAhem, come in.â
The door opened, revealing a subordinate.
âGreetings. I am Jerome, a direct aide to Her Grace the Grand Duchess. A banquet has been prepared this evening in your honor. Her Grace requests your attendance.â
âAh, of course. We will attend.â
They bowed eagerly.
But the moment the door closedâ
âTsk, these northerners are already being pushy.â
âI know, dear. Looks like theyâll try those ridiculous prices again this year!â
âThat wonât do. Weâve been taking losses for years because of that agreement my grandfather was forced into.â
âI heard the imperial court and the North have been on bad terms lately. This is our chance.â
âExactly. This year, we must make a profit.â
âBut⌠what if they notice?â
âNonsense. We prepared thoroughly.â
ââŚStill, Iâm nervous. Iâll go look around the castle with Sonya.â
âGo ahead.â
His wife left with their daughter.
Now alone, the merchant approached a table.
âHm? Whatâs that?â
There was a birdcage.
Inside was a rare-looking bird.
âWake up, Perdiccus.â
The bird lifted its head.
Chirp.
[You called, master?]
ââŚ?!â
I was shocked.
SomehowâI could understand it.
The merchant tied a note to its leg.
âGo deliver this.â
Chirp.
[Understood.]
He carried it to the windowâ
I quickly hid.
Creakâ
Flapâ
The bird flew off into the snowy sky.
The cold wind rushed in.
âCough! Cough!â
âThis is my chance!â
I darted inside.
Soon, he shut the window, sat downâ
âand fell asleep, snoring.
ââŚâŚâ
Perfect.
I flew straight toward the clothes.
âSo manyâŚâ
Luxurious outfits filled the racks.
âLetâs see⌠something simple but elegant, classic yet trendyâŚâ
I scanned quickly.
âSomething that suits his gray hair and blue-gray eyesâŚâ
Just thenâ
The door burst open.
Startled, I dove into the nearest outfitâa frilly, colorful dress.
The merchantâs daughter ran in.
âDaddy! Iâm cold!â
âSnoreâŚâ
âI want my coat!â
âSnoreâŚâ
âUwaaah!â
She looked aroundâ
âand started running toward me.
I gulped.
