Chapter 10
The snake looked deeply moved, its eyes growing moist, then it slipped snugly beneath Irixâs jacket collar and hid there. Soon, a shout loud enough to make ears ring echoed out.
âIrix Verkardt! Come out right now, Irix Verkardt!â
I asked quietly,
âThey looking for you?â
ââŠI heard it too.â
When the snake cautiously poked its head out from under the collar, Irix pressed it back down with his fingers.
âYou stay right there.â
From beneath the collar, the snakeâs tongue flicked in and out.
With loud banging on doors, more shouting followed.
âNo, itâs not here!â
Bang!
As a door opened, people screamed.
âEek!â
âWho are you?!â
Bang again!
âPlease spare me!â
âAaaargh!â
Another bang.
âHeâs not here!â
âWhere the hell is he?!â
âCome out, Irix Verkardt!â
âŠWouldnât it have been better to figure out which cabin Irix was actually in first? This was way too noisy.
âHeâs not here! Are you sure this is the right place?â
âDamn it, yes! I checked myself! He definitely boarded here!â
âThen why isnât he here?!â
Maybe because there were still lots of cabins they hadnât checked yet?
âWhy are those people making such a fuss trying to find you?â
ââŠIf they come in, ask them.â
At last, the door to our cabin was flung open.
BANGâ
The ceiling and floor both shook. Damn it.
I stepped toward the door.
âSenior, what are youââ
âShh. Quiet.â
The men who barged in with a crash flinched when they saw me.
âWhat the hell is this?â
Just as the noise had foretold, they looked rough and vicious. Their clothes werenât decent either. From their expressions to their outfits, everything about them screamed that theyâd trample and take whatever they pleased. Swords and guns were stuck in their belts. Things that were ugly to begin with looked even uglier in the hands of ugly men.
They didnât seem to belong to the Order. No one doing Godâs work would dress like this.
One of the men stepped in front of me. He was the biggest of them all, and his face looked the least polite.
He snickered as he asked,
âWell now, is it just you here, miss?â
âAnd what would you do with that information?â
âSenior, what are you saying right nowââ
Before Irix could finish, the snake darted out from inside the collar, coiled swiftly around Irixâs chin, and sealed his mouth shut. Irix froze on the spot.
People of this world, take note: the natural enemy of the one who will someday destroy your world is a snake. Size doesnât matter. Even a baby snake fresh out of its egg is more than enough of a threat to the mastermind.
The man leading the band of outlaws let out a whistle.
âSo there was someone else with you. Looks like quite the young master tooâyour outfitâs impressive.â
He really is an impressive young master. The exact one youâre looking for, actually.
As the man approached Irix, the snake lifted its head and flicked its tongue.
âMy goodness, whatâs that?â
The man chuckled.
âLooks pretty cute. Could fetch a good price if sold. Guess rich young masters keep expensive pets, huh?â
Offended by the appraisal, the snake spread its wings wide and lowered its head.
That was an attack stance.
The man exclaimed admiringly,
âLook at that. A snake with wings! Thatâs a seriously pricey pet!â
Angrier still, the snake shook its tiny head fiercely, hissing. The man laughed as if he were watching a trick.
âSo, is it poisonous, miss?â
âYeah. If it bites you, you die instantly.â
Irixâs eyes wavered resentfully.
ââŠâŠâ
Once again, I couldnât believe someone like that was supposed to destroy the world. Or maybe this world was just that bad.
âSo donât touch it.â
The man burst out laughing.
âOh my, how scary! Guess Iâd better be careful!â
âYeah, good thinking. Now get away from my junior.â
Everyone laughed uproariously.
âOh my, protecting your junior, are you?â
âHow brave!â
âRight, a fragile young master needs a lady to protect him!â
Irixâs eyes flickered with resentment again. What exactly are you unhappy about?
âBefore that, let me ask you something, miss.â
I didnât answer, but the man spoke anyway.
âWeâre looking for Irix Verkardt, the chancellorâs son. You happen to know him?â
I do. Heâs right there.
âYou didnât come just to have tea together, so why are you looking for him?â
âTo take him with us.â
âYou donât exactly look like the sort the chancellorâs son would trust and follow.â
I twirled my finger in the air.
The man laughed loudly.
âYeah, youâre right. Weâre not close. Donât know each other at all.â
That much I could tell too.
âSo he wonât come willingly. That means you plan to kidnap him. That wonât be easy.â
At that moment, one of his companions urged him on.
âWe need to find him before those guys arrive. Donât waste time here!â
âGot it! But first, weâll take this.â
He pointed at the snake.
âI know a guy who auctions stuff like this. Jewel-like body, wings and all! Itâll sell for a fortune.â
The man grabbed the snake by the neck. The frightened snakeâs tail stiffened. Irix clenched his fist.
âYou said it was poisonous!â
âDonât be ridiculous, miss. A pet snake kept by a lady wouldnât be venomous. Just expensive.â
Do ladies here really keep a lot of snakes? What a strange trend.
The snake flailed and shook its head. Irix pulled his fist back. Incredibly, he looked like he was about to protect the snake.
And thenâ
Crunch.
A sharp sound rang out.
The snake had its eyes tightly shut as it bit down on the manâs finger.
Seeing the snake desperately sink its fangs into that thick finger, resisting with all it had, made it look pitiful.
Snake, let go and back off. Iâll hit him for you instead.
âOw! That hurts!â
The man laughed loudly, and thenâ
Thud.
He collapsed.
ââŠâŠâ
ââŠâŠâ
I glanced at Irix. His eyes were wide.
I looked at the fallen man.
He wasnât movingâŠ
Reluctantly, I approached him and checked his neck.
âHeâs dead.â
Irixâs eyes widened even more as he looked at the snake still wrapped around his chin.
The snake blinked its innocent black eyes and looked at Irix.
Irix then looked at me. Seeing his trembling gray-green eyes, I clasped my hands and bowed my head.
Sorry. You were right.
That thing really is a venomous snake.
Irix clenched his jaw and said quickly,
âIt really was poisonous.â
âSo you didnât know when you said that.â
âIs that important right now?! Get rid of it, now!â
I raised my hands.
âCalm down. I only just found out it was venomous too.â
âSenior, are you an idiot? You picked it up without knowing it was venomous? What, fifteen percent? This is one of that fifteen percent!â
âIf Iâd found out that way, wouldnât I be in no state to tell anyone?â
Because Iâd have to get bitten to know.
âIf you know now, then throw it away!â
âThat would require the assumption that Iâm the one raising it, but I already said Iâm not. It just follows me around, so I have to wait until it leaves on its own.â
âYou could just throw it out the window.â
If it were that easy, why donât you throw it? Your handâs closer.
âCalm down. Iâll admit itâs venomous. Sorry.â
âYou think a âsorryâ covers this? Are you going to say that while standing by my corpse after I die from a bite?â
Ah, that actually sounds nice. The world wouldnât be destroyed, and Iâd die without regrets.
âWhatâs with that tempted look?â
Because it really did sound tempting.
Just then, one of the gang said,
âHey, wait.â
He rummaged through his pocket and pulled out a photograph.
âThatâs him!â
âWhat?â
âThat guy! We found him!â
Everyone gathered around the photo. I stepped closer too and looked over their shoulders.
It was indeed a photo of Irix.
Noâmore precisely, it was a photo of a photo of Irix.
It was blurry, but he still looked good. The original must have been even better. I pointed at the photo.
âYeah, thatâs you.â
ââŠWhat happens if I admit it?â
You really shouldnât say that when you stand out so much wherever you go.
One of the gang shouted,
âGrab him now! We donât have time! If the Order shows up, itâs over!â
The snake on Irixâs shoulder lifted its head. Knowing now just how venomous it was, the gang froze, unable to move.
âSenior.â
As if heâd finally made up his mind, Irix let out a long sigh.
âYeah.â
âWeâve got something urgent to deal with first, so letâs talk about the venomous snake after we handle that.â
âWhat are you going to do?â
Irixâs neck flushed red.
âAbout the venomous snake⊠Iâm about to do something, so⊠donât bite me.â
Before the snake could respondâbefore I could even answer for itâthe snake was suddenly flung into the air.
