Chapter 06
âIâm glad we were able to come to an agreement.â
His tone was so solemn that it felt like we should be shaking hands after some dramatic settlement.
âAnd wash up before you get into bed. Itâs not just you using it anymore.â
I usually do wash before lying down anywayâŠ
But there was no way I could say Iâd been startled after reading his diary and jumped onto the bed, so I nodded obediently.
âOkay. Iâll wash up and change my clothes.â
He was a year younger than me, yet bigger in build, and with the way he spoke, he didnât feel like a younger brother at all.
I took out some indoor clothes from the wardrobe. He didnât seem ready to sleep yet; he picked one book from the stack and sat down at the desk. Glancing over his shoulder, it looked like quite difficult material.
âSince I said Iâd get along with himâŠâ
And after unintentionally peeking at his diary, a genuine desire to treat him well began to rise within me.
Honestly, it was hard to sincerely follow the Duke of Icard, a man who could one day kill me.
But Evan was different. Thinking about how he, too, had no choice in this marriage, we were in the same position. If he wasnât a child who was innately cruel or indifferent, then I truly wanted us to get along.
âYou graduated from the academy today, and youâre still studying?â
I asked casually as I stepped closer.
âYouâre really diligent.â
Then I slowly raised my hand and stroked his jet-black hair. It wrapped softly and smoothly around my fingers.
[If thereâs something to praise, pat their head.]
âYouâre younger than me, but youâre impressive.â
When Evan didnât say anything, I wondered if heâd suddenly changed his mind and quickly pulled my hand away.
âAh, did you not like it?â
He didnât even turn around.
âSorryâŠâ
âNo.â
He murmured, gripping the book cover tightly.
âAh, then thatâs a relief.â
I said quickly and hurried into the bathroom. The last thing I saw was the back of his neck, which seemed to be flushed red once again.
âHave some more of this.â
Since Evan and I shared the same room, we ended up having breakfast together as well.
[Sharing favorite foods.]
At first, I thought I should just be nice so I wouldnât get hit, but after seeing the diary, my feelings changed a little.
I realized he wasnât cold by nature, but a lonely child who carefully hid his wishes deep inside.
Having grown up without a family, I understood that feeling well, and I wanted to at least comfort his childhood. Even if he eventually grew into a completely indifferent man. That was why I was now showing genuine enthusiasm about becoming close to him.
âIâm fine.â
Evan handed the tart I offered right back to me.
âI donât like sweet things.â
âReally?â
âIâm not a kid.â
Liar.
âYour eyes were sparkling when the tart came out.â
I thought, glancing sideways at him.
âIf you donât want it, it canât be helped.â
I wasnât the type to insist twice, so I pulled the tart back toward myself.
While I was eating the tart, Evan was reading a newspaper the servant had brought.
I was idly moving my fork when one of the articles he had opened happened to catch my eye.
[The 500th Anniversary Grand Horse Racing Event! Experts predict the largest betting pool in history]
âAh. If itâs the 500thâŠ!â
The 500th anniversary horse race was the event where the male lead of the original novel The Empireâs Great Deal first appeared.
Horse racing, where people bet on races, was one of the many forms of entertainment among noble families. While there were no formal restrictions on status, the minimum betting amount was quite high, making it difficult for commoners to participate.
And I already knew exactly how the male lead made his initial capital here.
ââŠâŠâ
I swallowed a bite of tart.
Iâd been wondering how to earn enough money to live comfortably even after running awayâand here it was.
âRight. First, I need to find a way to participate in that and gather some money. Then I should decide where to go after I escape. Thereâs still time, but I canât miss this chance.â
There were about seven years left until the year I turned twenty-oneâuntil I died according to my villainous father-in-lawâs plan and Evan married the imperial princess.
âInstead of dying, Iâll fake my disappearance. As long as I officially vanish, Evan can marry the princess anyway.â
What happened to the story after I disappeared didnât matter to me.
âIâll just quietly live it up, spending money and enjoying myself like this.â
Living in hiding might be a little boring, but it was better than dying.
âAnd I only need to stay hidden until Princess Elani and Evan get divorced anywayâŠâ
A rough plan formed in my mind.
âDo you want to go?â
While I was deep in thought, Evan suddenly asked.
âHuh?â
âYou keep staring at this article.â
âAh.â
Heâd noticed I was looking at the horse racing article.
âYeah, I want to go. It sounds fun.â
Of course it didâit was my chance to secure a solid starting fund.
No matter that I was the dukeâs daughter-in-law, I didnât have a single coin of my own right now. Every luxury of food, clothing, and shelter was provided, but since I was still a minor, I didnât have an official budget.
âSince Young Master Evan attends the academy, a budget has been allocated under the pretext of allowance⊠but in Young Madamâs case, thereâs no justification to do so under the current circumstances.â
When Iâd subtly asked the butler before, heâd said a budget could be arranged the moment I became an adult. Until then, I was to request whatever I needed each time.
âThere may not be a formal budget, but the Duke has ordered that anything Young Madam desires be purchased. If thereâs something you want, just say the word.â
There was no way I could say what I wanted was âcash that can never be traced.â
Creating slush funds from the dukeâs estate in this situation was nearly impossible. And I couldnât very well ask the man who had even paid off the count familyâs debts to set up a separate budget just for me.
âItâs okay if I go, right?â
âYou want to goâwhoâs going to stop you?â
He answered indifferently.
âItâs in two days.â
Which meant Iâd have cash in two days.
Alright. Time to walk the road of money.
Excited, I rattled off questions.
âWho should I tell? The butler? Iâll need to bring a maid, right? But can I place bets myself? Do I need a legal guardian since Iâm underage?â
It would be my first outing on my own since coming to the ducal estate, so there was a lot I didnât know.
But the more questions I asked, the stranger Evanâs expression became.
âWellâŠâ
He tapped his empty dessert plate and muttered,
âI donât really have anything to do these days either.â
âHuh?â
âGoing to watch an event like that wouldnât be bad.â
ââŠâŠâ
âI donât hate crowded places.â
ââŠâŠâ
âAnd Iâm pretty good at reading horses, too.â
I stared at him for a moment, then sighed inwardly. Maybe it was because heâd grown up without much emotionâwhy did he have to talk in circles like this?
Well, it couldnât be helped. Iâd said I wanted us to get along. And I was a year older.
âUm, Evan, thenâŠâ
I smiled softly and asked,
ââŠDo you want to go together?â
