Chapter : 12
In my memory, Seo Jaegyeom was late as often as he ate meals.
School, meeting friendsâwhatever it was, he was always on his own schedule.
âHey, why isnât Seo Jaegyeom here? Didnât he say he was coming?â
âCall him.â
âHeâs not answering⊠Oh, there he is.â
âJaegyeom, why are you so late?â
âJust âcause.â
Even when the school gate was about to close right in front of his nose in the morning, I never saw Jaegyeom run.
Friends never got angry at him for being an hour late. Neither did the teachers.
Maybe only his girlfriends, who changed every two months or so, got mad at him. But even then, that never made him change.
His constant girlfriend turnover probably had something to do with that too.
And yet, today of all days, Seo Jaegyeom was standing at the school gate on time.
âŠWith Jisoo.
âWhoa, Jaegyeom! Is the sun setting in the east today? Iâm seeing Seo Jaegyeom show up on time?â
The P.E. teacher, standing at the gate supervising kids coming in, threw an arm around Jaegyeomâs shoulder as if they were close.
Jaegyeom brushed his arm off with a blatantly annoyed expression.
Even at the rudeness, the P.E. teacher just laughed heartily and slapped him on the back.
Jaegyeom grimaced and readjusted Jisooâs bag, which had slipped down from the impact.
âSo heavy.â
âItâs full of workbooks.â
âAh.â
âAre you coming to the academy today, Jaegyeom?â
âNo.â
âHow many times are you gonna skip in a monthâŠ.â
âThe math teacherâs belly sticks out too much. I canât focus.â
As usual, even with cute nagging from Jisoo, his short replies and dead expression were probably just because he was sleepy.
After all, he woke up early just to go to school with Jisoo.
âDonât look at the belly; look at the board.â
âHow can I not? Itâs blocking the view.â
Talking naturally back and forth, Jisoo and Jaegyeom passed through the gate.
I slowly lowered the arm Iâd raised to call Jisoo.
âBetter not butt in.â
If I stuck myself between them now, it would only get awkward. I stopped walking on purpose. I messed with my hair and tightened my bag strap to kill time.
âGood morningâŠ.â
That should be long enough.
I lowered even my voice as I shuffled past the P.E. teacher.
âOh! Dahye!â
ââŠGood morning.â
âDahye! Why so low-energy in the morning! Câmon, fighting! Fight!â
ââŠâŠ.â
âDah?â
At the loud booming voice, Jisoo and Jaegyeom ahead of me turned around.
Seeing my flustered face turning red, Jisoo also looked embarrassed.
Our eyes met like that. Then my gaze shifted to Jaegyeom standing beside her.
Jaegyeom clicked his tongue when he saw me.
â? Whatâs his problem.â
Clicking your tongue at someone? Isnât that too much?
âDah!â
Jisoo, who had been walking shoulder to shoulder with Jaegyeom a moment ago, ran over to me.
âWhen did you get here?â
ââŠLike, a few seconds agoâŠ?â
âWhy didnât you call me!â
âAh⊠I didnât see you. I didnât know you were in front of me.â
âJaegyeom and I just met on the way, by chance. We live close.â
Jisoo emphasized several times that they absolutely had not come togetherâthat they just met by accident.
Jaegyeom stayed silent and didnât butt in.
He tilted his head slightly, eyes landing on meâlike I was something bothersome and tiring.
= Isnât that too much, part two.
âYesterday he seemed a little nicer.â
Back to normal overnight.
But honestly, thatâs just how Jaegyeom was.
Moody, does whatever he wants.
And itâs not like I canât understand.
âHe was walking with the girl he likes, and I interrupted.â
How annoying must that be for him.
When I didnât say anything, Jisoo looked worried.
âDah, are you madâŠ?â
âNo! Not at all! Why would I be? You two can totally walk here together.â
âStillâŠâ
âSeriously, no. Iâm in a great mood right now.â
Even waving my hands to show she shouldnât worry, Jisoo still looked guiltyâlike sheâd committed a huge betrayal. Watching her squirm, I suddenly wondered:
Maybe Jisoo likes Jaegyeom too, but hasnât said anything because of me.
If these two liked each other back then, but didnât become a couple only because I was in the wayâŠ
âŠthen Iâm totally the villain, arenât I?
âIâm sorryyy⊠I shouldâve been more considerate.â
âWhat are you talking about, itâs not like that.â
âStill.â
âGang Dahye.â
Jaegyeom cut off Jisooâs repeated apologies.
He swept his eyes over me from head to toe, full of annoyance.
âDo I need your permission to walk to school with Han Jisoo?â
ââŠNo.â
âRight, you donât. Because youâre not my girlfriend. And never will be.â
âThatâs⊠true.â
âGood. Glad you know. Then can you get going first?â
âYeahâŠâ
I really am the villain, huhâŠ
Jisoo mustâve sensed irritated Jaegyeomâs mood tooâshe shut her mouth and just watched.
Feeling awkward and at a loss, I decided to just leave.
That was when something came down on top of my head from behind.
A parasol lowered over me, casting shade. Everywhere else was bright with morning sunlight, but suddenly only my surroundings dimmed.
What the? I turned around dazed.
The guy who had suddenly covered me with an umbrella on such a sunny day lifted it slightly, showing his face.
Wait. Not an umbrella.
A parasol.
Standing there, looking down at me, was Jung Eunsungâholding a tiny, frilly lace parasol ridiculously small for his size.
He tilted it carefully to block the sun and said, expressionless:
âHi.â
ââŠHi.â
Wow, what an entrance. Straight out of Temptation of WolvesâŠ
Is the parasol just a prop for dramatic effect
âThat parasol⊠is yours?â
âYeah.â
Eunsung shut it casually and began folding each rib with no regard for everybody staring.
Because of his sudden appearance holding a parasol, I forgot completely what weâd been talking about.
âWhat theâŠ?â
âHeâs that trainee guyâŠ.â
Everyoneâincluding P.E. and the kids walking inâwas staring at the 18-year-old boy whoâd shown up with a sky-blue lace parasol.
âWhat kind of guy uses a lace parasolâŠâ
âArenât parasols mostly like that?â
âI wouldnât know, Iâve never bought oneâŠâ
Whether people whispered or not, Eunsung slipped the neatly folded parasol into his bag and said:
âUV rays are the number one cause of skin aging.â
âOh⊠right.â
âIf youâre tall with good skin, people think youâre handsome really easily. Even when youâre actually not.â
As he said that, his eyes landed squarely on Jaegyeom.
ââŠâŠâ
ââŠâŠâ
âŠDid he just call Seo Jaegyeom ugly?
âArenât you going? Or do you want to stand here under this blazing UV?â
âOhâyeah, letâs goâŠâ
Still stunned, I followed him.
Behind us, Jaegyeom scoffed in disbelief as we walked away.
I expected Eunsung to stride ahead by himself, but surprisingly, he slowed down to match my pace. As we changed shoes and started up the stairs, he said:
âYou really want to like a jerk like that?â
He stressed the âJaeâ part of âjaesueopda (no manners),â twisting it into a jab.
âHeâs got Jae-rk energy but no decency. Not even handsome, but acting like he is. Guys like that getting called handsomeâthis world is real Jae-ridiculous.â
ââŠ.â
Dude, are you sure youâre not a rapper, not a vocalist?
I mumbled in embarrassment.
âNo⊠Heâs not usually that rude. Heâs just sensitive today.â
âHmph.â
Eunsung clearly wasnât buying it.
I figured defending Jaegyeom any further would just get me roasted too, so I changed the topic.
âWhy do you hate him so much, anyway?â
Heâd only transferred a few days ago, so there shouldnât have been time for drama.
And as far as I remember, those two didnât fight back then either.
Even now, Jaegyeom looked completely uninterested in Eunsung.
It looks like itâs just Eunsung burning with hostility on his ownâŠ
He answered without changing expression.
âI.â
âYeah, you?â
