Chapter 7
âLululu. One gold coin per star, gold coin, and more gold coins.â
I was humming a tune while stacking coins I collected today.
âBANG!
âHey, Iâm here!â
As always, Riki barged through the door.
âRiki. Iâve said it before, youâre supposed to knock before entering a ladyâs bedroom.â
âYeah, yeah, got it.â
âWhat if I was changing clothes?â
âWeâre both girls, so what?â
âRight! Between girls, thatâs fine⊠Wait, what? Youâre a girl?â
I jumped up from my seat. Riki stood before me, chin tilted up, looking defiant.
âWhat⊠what do you mean?â
She was about my height, slim, with tanned skin, short hair, fierce-looking eyes, and a mischievous smile that didnât match her eyes⊠She looked like a street urchin!
âEsmeralda, the famous astrologer, didnât know that?â
âW-Well, I guess not.â
I quickly checked Rikiâs profile:
Name: Riki
Race: Human
Age: 13
Gender: Female
Hometown: Peta
Traits: Swiftest child head of the household, miser, loves sweets, blind devotion, informant, awakened one (shadow thief)
âSheâs really a girl?â
Her gender couldnât have changed in a month, so this was clearly my carelessness.
âUgh, just because she wears pants, has short hair, and a rough mouth, I assumed she was a boy. I was trapped by stereotypes! Modern human, complete failure.â
Riki smirked as I slapped my forehead in frustration.
âYouâre right about guessing a lot correctly, but your behavior when weâre alone seems shadyâŠâ
âOh, itâs hard to always act like an elegant and solemn astrologer.â
I wasnât a great enough actress to hide my true self as Esmeralda all day. Pretending was enough while on duty.
âPolite behavior only needs to show when communicating with the stars, right?â
âŠThat was my excuse.
âAnyway, Rikiânot âRiki-kunâ but âRiki-chanââwhy did you suddenly barge into my room? Bored?â
Riki pointed at the gold coins on my desk as if sheâd remembered something.
âI just thought of this⊠Fake coins have been circulating in the Gray Fortress lately. Check to make sure you havenât been affected.â
âNo way. I only get gold coins.â
âTheyâre counterfeiting gold too.â
âWhat? Not silver or copper coins?â
âYeah.â
âWow, forging gold coins with the Emperorâs face is a serious crime.â
âŠThat thought made me instantly suspicious.
This place, the Gray Fortress, was a criminalâs paradise. Nothing here was surprising.
âWith scoundrels everywhere, itâs likely someone doesnât care about counterfeiting or offending the crown.â
My reasoning was flawless.
I immediately grabbed Riki by both shoulders.
âRiki, how do you check for counterfeit gold coins?â
My blood, sweat, and tears went into that money! It must be flawless!
âHmmm, this isâŠâ
Checker, a man with messy gray hair, adjusted his monocle.
According to Riki, he was the most famous fence in the underworld, staying in the Gray Fortress for days at a time to make various deals.
Riki was confident that with Checkerâs keen eyes, any fake gold coins would be detected.
âAll sixty-two gold coins I brought have been checked.â
Checker placed the last coin on the desk and roughly removed his glasses.
âSeventeen out of sixty-two are fake.â
âWhat? What?â
âCanât you hear? Seventeen out of sixty-two are fake.â
âWha⊠what?â
My ears were fine, but my heart wasnât.
âMy money! My precious money!â
Seventeen coins I earned through honest labor were gone. My teeth ground in frustration.
âI worked for free seventeen times?!â
I had wasted precious time and effort. My head was boiling.
Meanwhile, Checker scooped up the seventeen fake coinsâor whatever they wereâand pocketed them.
âIâll return the fake coins to the lord of the fortress.â
I raised my hand before he left.
âQuestion!â
âWhat is it?â
âCan the scammed coins be compensated?â
Checker looked at me indifferently.
âI donât know. Ask Kin.â
Then my task was clear.
âIâm going to the lord now, right? Iâll go with you!â
Not just a single copper coin, but seventeen gold coins lost?
No matter how rich I became, I could never accept such a loss.
Never, never.
âI wonât tolerate it!â
So, lord or Kin, Iâll go to anyone!
âAnother batch of fake coins appeared.â
âI thought we collected them all.â
âYour money hasnât been checked yet.â
Checker pointed at me.
I awkwardly waved my hand, realizing it was the moment to greet him.
âAh, hello⊠itâs been a while, hasnât it?â
It was my first time facing Lord Kin of the Gray Fortress since the curse incident.
He had completely ignored me, even though my feet were trapped in the fortress.
âI heard youâre making some profit here.â
âŠNever mind what I said earlier. He seemed to be closely observing my every move. I suspect Riki was reporting.
I hesitated before speaking.
âWell, as you know, Iâm making some profit⊠but I just heard that seventeen of the coins are fake.â
âSo?â
âCan I get compensated?â
âCompensated?â
Kinâs eyebrows twitched, and the left corner of his mouth tilted.
I noticed a faint scar on his cheek.
âIt mustâve been a serious wound to leave such a mark. Even with scars, handsome men just look more menacing.â
I was lost in such foolish thoughts and only realized later that Kin had been smirking at me.
âYou got scammed, yet you want someone else to take responsibility? Ridiculous.â
âUgh.â
Kinâs words reminded me of something I had forgotten.
âThis is the Gray Fortress! Normal laws donât apply here!â
Here, if scammed, itâs the victimâs fault; if beaten, itâs the weakâs fault; if pickpocketed, itâs the ownerâs fault.
No way Iâd get compensation for fake coins here!
âSo, the stars you serve never told you youâd receive seventeen fake coins?â
Kin even reversed the interrogation onto me.
âThatâs because I donât always use my power. Even though Iâm an astrologer, Iâm also an Awakened One. How could I always keep my abilities active?â
Cold sweat ran down my back, my mouth dry. Checker, quietly observing, suddenly interrupted.
âStars? What are you talking about?â
âSheâs a famous astrologer in San Pedro who couldnât even predict being scammed.â
âAn astrologer from San Pedro? Iâve heard of her.â
Checker fiddled with his chin, snapped his thumb and forefinger together, and exclaimed:
âThis is the âMystical Esmeraldaâ? Heard she has an incredible charm⊠but she looks ordinary.â
âIsnât that a bit rude for a first meeting?â
I pouted, but neither Kin nor Checker cared.
âHasnât the counterfeit coin incident been a while?â
âSomewhat.â
âInspecting coins every visit is tedious. Is that all your ability can do?â
âI have only one body, and more important tasks exist.â
âAnd your subordinates?â
âTheyâre useless.â
Kin clicked his tongue in dissatisfaction. Checker glanced at me and spoke:
âThen why not try a new tool? The astrologer from San Pedro.â
