Chapter 24
The next morning.
Wooyeon woke with a start as a savory, nutty smell brushed his nose.
â?!â
He nearly jumped out of his skin when he opened his eyes and found two bright ones staring right at him.
âUncle, youâre awake?â
âGah!!!â
âHuh?â
With a look that clearly said why are you so startled?, Yewon stared at Wooyeon. Clutching his pounding heart, Wooyeon took a deep breath in and out.
âHeyâwhat is wrong with you first thing in the morning! You almost gave your uncle a heart attack!â
âHurry up and get up so we can eat together.â
âEat?â
At Yewonâs words, Wooyeon finally noticed a handsome face looking down at him like he was pathetic.
âItâs already broad daylight and youâre only waking up now.â
âOh please, youâre so chatty for someone who doesnât even sleep when the moonâs at its peak, jerk.â
Wooyeon snapped back reflexively at the sudden jab.
âGet up and eat. Yewonâs been waiting because of you.â
âShe was waiting for me?â
Wooyeon looked back and forth between Yewon and Doha in disbelief.
âIâve seriously been in a group with you for seven years. Have youâor any of the other membersâever waited for me because you wanted to eat together?!â
ââŚHave we?â
âHave we, my assâ!â
Just as Wooyeonâs long-suppressed resentment was about to explodeâ
âUncle, the soup⌠itâs getting cold.â
Yewon tugged gently at Wooyeonâs clothes.
ââŚIâm letting this go just once because itâs Yewon. You should know youâve got an amazing niece.â
âI already know.â
âIf you werenât good-looking, I swearââ
Even as he grumbled, Wooyeon found himself glancing at Dohaâs back.
âŚBut seriously.
Why does he look so⌠refreshed?
Annoyingly so?
Seeing how much calmer and more stable Doha looked compared to usual, Wooyeon snorted softly.
The three of them then sat down to breakfast: kimchi soybean sprout soup Doha had made, along with side dishes bought from a deli.
âYou know how to make kimchi sprout soup? I thought cooking was Ianâs thing.â
âI learned it on a cooking show I went on.â
âOh right. You were on âSingle-Living Idol Clean-Outâ. Didnât you pretend to be all domestic there and then get beaten up by Ian afterward?â
ââŚShut up. I couldnât exactly just stand around doing nothing on a show like that.â
As Dohaâs face reddened, Wooyeon chuckled.
ââŚSo whatâre you doing today? Iâm going to the department store with Yewon.â
âWhy? You hate shopping. Even when the sales staff push you hard, you always leave your casual outfits to the stylists.â
At Wooyeonâs offhand remark, Yewonâs shoulders drooped slightly.
Seeing that reaction, Wooyeon panicked internally.
Oh noâthis wasnât Dohaâs shopping, it was Yewonâs!
ââŚBut! It is about time you started buying your own clothes. Youâre already twenty-five and outsourcing even your casual wear is just pathetic! You made a great decision! Fashion means Han Wooyeon, and Han Wooyeon means shopping! If you take me as your shopping buddy, Iâm perfect! Yewon, this guy has no sense at allâyour uncle will pick everything for you. No, Iâll buy it all for you. Yeah. This is when you use the rich-uncle card. When else would you use it?â
ââŚâŚâ
As Wooyeon desperately tried to smooth things over, Doha shot him a look full of disgust before turning to Yewon.
âYour uncle doesnât hate shopping. He just hated shopping with Wooyeon.â
ââŚReally?â
âYeah. He went just fine with Uncle Eon.â
âŚWhat a liar?!
Wooyeon was dumbfounded watching Doha lie without blinking. As if Ian would ever go shopping with Doha.
Still, he didnât show it on his face. He hated it when Yewon felt uncomfortable even more.
Exactly four hours laterâ
ââŚâŚâ
ââŚâŚâ
ââŚIâve never seen sales staff this excited before.â
The three of them stumbled out of a luxury brand store, utterly exhausted, both hands full of shopping bags.
ââŚI can see why theyâd be excited.â
Theyâd just blown through two monthsâ worth of royalties.
Doha looked at Wooyeon with utter disbelief. So this is how this guy livesâwearing clothes this expensive all the time. Heâd always wondered where all his money went.
That was the reason.
Wooyeon, Eon, and Taeyoung often went shopping themselves, but Doha and Yeonho never did. So every salesperson enthusiastically pushed expensive items onto Doha.
Normally, Doha wouldâve refusedâbutâ
âOh my~ this is your niece? Sheâs absolutely adorable! No wonder youâre so good-lookingâit must run in the family. Honestly, sheâs even prettier!â
âWow, are you going to make her a celebrity too? If not, thatâd be a national loss.â
âSheâs not just prettyâsheâs so well-behaved and sweet. Youâre truly blessed as an uncle. Sheâs like a fairy from a storybook!â
Overwhelmed by the praise pouring in about Yewon, Doha ended up becoming a complete yes-man.
ââŚâŚâ
And yet, he didnât regret it at all.
This was the first time heâd openly introduced Yewon as his niece since deciding to raise her himself. He was planning to reveal her through a parenting variety show anyway, and these were salespeople he already knewâthere was no reason to hide it.
Watching Yewon laugh shyly in embarrassment at the compliments, Doha felt something stir in his chest.
Ever since coming to live with him, Yewon had always seemed a little subdued. This was the first time she looked genuinely proud.
For that expression alone, this amount of money didnât matter at all.
âAnd itâs not like I was the only one buying stuff. You werenât exactly holding back either.â
ââŚâŚâ
At Dohaâs remark, Wooyeon quickly turned his head away.
That was true.
âI get that I got carried away, but why were you so into it? Sheâs my niece.â
âS-Shut up! Sheâs my niece too!!â
âSays who.â
Both Doha and Wooyeon had been grinning ear to ear at the praise directed at Yewon, swiping their cards like maniacs.
âYewon was insanely popular today. The whole worldâs going to know how pretty she isâthis is bad.â
â!â
Still holding Dohaâs hand tightly, Yewon looked up in surprise.
âY-youâre more popular, UncleâŚ!â
âNo. I was happy tooâbecause Yewon got so much love.â
âExactly. Lee Doha, youâre going to have a hard time protecting Yewon. Good luck.â
ââŚâŚ!â
Praise for himself didnât move him much, but praise for Yewon made his wallet fly open without restraint.
âŚEven though everything they bought was technically for Doha.
Is this what being a parent feels like?
Though bewildered by these new emotions, Doha found that he liked the feeling quite a lot.
âToo bad this place doesnât have a kidsâ line. We couldnât buy Yewon anything. Letâs go next door.â
âHere, we really need to buy Yewon clothes, Han Wooyeon.â
âDo you think I donât know that?â
âI mean donât interfere.â
ââŚThereâs no one else in the world who crushes enthusiasm before it even starts like you do.â
Clicking his tongue in disbelief, Wooyeon headed straight into the kidsâ clothing store.
âHey!! Yewon!! Try this on!!â
Digging through the racks like heâd struck gold, Wooyeon held up a pink dress triumphantly.
At his shout, everyone in the store turned to look at him.
It wasnât surprisingâhis voice carried clearly, andâ
More than that, his appearance was impossible to ignore.
Well over 180 centimeters tall, with proportions that screamed Iâm a celebrity. Even with masks on, Wooyeon and Doha couldnât hide it.
âŚMaybe I shouldâve told them to wear hats too.
Heâd told them not to cover up too much because it would draw attentionâbut a mask alone clearly wasnât enough.
Feeling awkward, Yewon headed toward Wooyeon.
And thenâ
âOh? Well, look who this is. Isnât this our niece?â
â!â
Someone suddenly grabbed Yewonâs arm.
Before Yewon could even look up in shock, Doha slapped the hand awayâsmackâand lifted Yewon into his arms protectively.
âDonât touch a child without permission.â
Dohaâs voice was icy cold, sharper than frost. It was the maximum anger he could showâhim, who was usually unfailingly polite to others.
Only after being pulled into Dohaâs arms did Yewon see who had grabbed her.
âŚFake uncleâŚ!
And behind him stood Jeyeon.
â!â
