Chapter: 04
As soon as Rianâs breath hit my ear, my expression naturally soured.
âIs this⊠words or a fart?â
I roughly ruffled my bangs.
âWhat⊠when did I ever say you shouldnât talk?â
âYou did. When the young ladies came out, you grabbed the back of my head and slammed it into this table while saying that.â
Rian furrowed his brows and pointed at the table. Then he tapped his cheek with his index finger.
âDonât you see the mark on my face because of the center director?â
What was truly annoying was that there actually was a mark on his face shaped like the table.
âAh, this is infuriatingâŠâ
I barely held back a sigh.
âWellâŠâ
ââŠâ
âI-Iâm sorry for just slamming you like that. I didnât do it on purpose.â
âNo, it didnât hurt at all. Our center director has a soft fist.â
Rianâs right eye narrowed, as if his habitual wink was about to show. I quickly responded before his wink habit flared up.
âAnyway⊠itâs not that I told you to shut up completely, itâs that I said not to talk nonsense. We need to eavesdrop on Violet Young Lady and her friends.â
Rian blinked slowly. Soon, the corners of his eyes subtly drooped.
âCenter director.â
ââŠâ
âSo all the things I said until now were uselessâŠ?â
Without a second of hesitation, I answered.
âOf course.â
A small sigh escaped Rianâs lips.
âHa⊠itâs shocking, I canât say anything.â
ââŠâ
âHow can you be so cruel to me? Iâm the youngest, and youâre the center director.â
ââŠâ
âDonât you feel sorry for me, coming all the way from afar?â
Rian placed his hand on his forehead and pretended to sob.
âExcuse me, Rian. You said you canât say anything, yet here you are babbling.â
I again held back a groan.
âWhat were we even talking aboutâŠâ
It was always like this whenever I talked to Rian. He talked too much, and everything he said would fluster me and drag me into it.
A little later, I refocused the conversation.
âAnyway⊠did you hear what Violet Young Lady and her friends were saying, or not?â
âCan I tell you now? Iâll say it if the center director allows.â
Rian, who had been sulking, immediately changed his expression and smirked.
âAfter talking so much, now youâre asking for permission to tell me.â
I had never met someone so particular in my life.
âEven worse than Chase Orabun.â
Since I needed the answer, I decided to play along with him.
âYes, Iâll allow it.â
âReally?â
âYes. So, did you hear it or not?â
âI heard it.â
âThey said âYour Highnessâ⊠right?â
âYeah.â
So I wasnât the only one who heard âYour Highness.â
âThen itâs confirmed.â
Violet must have someone she likes. That person is the one called âYour Highness.â
My frustration immediately lifted.
âJohan couldnât even confess and got rejected by Violet.â
Johan Veloster, you got rejected!
Just as I was thinking Iâd have to give my favorite to another girl, that wasnât the case.
âGod must be on my side.â
A plan quickly formed in my mind. If I reject the request and approach Johan pretending itâs a coincidence, I could win his favorâŠ
âCenter director.â
While imagining my wedding with Johan, Rian interrupted.
I jolted and snapped out of my daydream.
âYesâŠ?â
Rian, who had been watching me closely, added,
âWhy do you like him?â
ââŠExcuse me?â
âThe center director is smiling right now.â
ââŠâ
âLike youâve just regained something precious that was taken from you.â
His tone, once lazy like Chase Orabunâs, was now sharp.
âW-whatâŠ?â
The way he eyed me like a spirit, the suddenly deepened voiceâRian felt like a different person in an instant.
âWhy is he acting like that all of a sudden?â
Whatever the reason, I couldnât let him catch me imagining myself in a wedding dress.
âI didnât smile.â
âYou did.â
âI didnât.â
âI said you did.â
âThen I guess itâs just how I look when Iâm smiling.â
âSince joining the center, Iâve only seen the center director smile four times.â
Rian held up four fingers.
âThis guy⊠counting thatâŠâ
I turned my gaze away, ignoring him. Then a thought struck me.
âBut⊠who exactly is the âYour Highnessâ that Violet likes?â
Of course, those called âYour Highnessâ would have a specific status: crown princes, princes, grand dukes, and dukes.
âOnly people of such high status are called Your Highness.â
But the problem was⊠there were too many people with that status in the Carnon Empire.
Because this world is like a game packed with all the popular male leads.
I recalled the numerous âYour Highnesses.â
âGrand Duke Calrain Leversel from <I Got Possessed While Typing>.â
âGrand Duke Euclid Aaron from <I Regret Loving You>.â
âGrand Duke Trosian Politeum Locksherd from <There Must Be Someone You Like>.â
ââŠIf I try to list all the grand dukes here, Iâll stay up all night.â
Suddenly, Rian tapped my shoulder.
âOh? Center director, I guess the young ladies are leaving now?â
Sure enough, Violet and her friends were moving a little farther into the salon.
âI canât miss this.â
I jumped up and gestured.
âFollow me, quickly.â
âOh myâŠâ
Rian shook his head left and right, snickering. When he finally stood, a large shadow fell over me.
âI understand your heart, center director. You say things harshly, but you still need me.â
ââŠâ
âYou want to come with me so badly, babyâŠâ
Rian, who had been mumbling, suddenly stopped talking. He held his breath and stared at me. Like a frozen statue.
âUhâŠ?â
Whatâs with him?
For a moment, his red eyes regained focus.
âAhâŠâ
ââŠâ
ââŠFlapping your hands like a little baby bird.â
ââŠ?â
âIf thatâs the case, why did you refuse to come with me earlier? Is this what they call âpush and pullâ?â
A sly smile appeared on Rianâs face again.
I pressed my lips together in displeasure.
âBaby bird⊠push and pullâŠâ
How does his brain work that he can say things like this without hesitation?
I wanted to smack his mouth, but Violet had moved a little farther, soâŠ
âI need to be patient.â
I grabbed Rian.
âEnough. Just follow me quickly. And please, keep your mouth shut while we move, will you?â
âYes, yes.â
A playful voice drifted from behind. I grabbed his sleeve and started walking.
âThis guy⊠canât we fire him for incompetence?â
I seriously considered a forced resignation while walking.
After parting with her friends, Violet headed somewhere alone. She soon stopped in front of Valenri Dress Shop.
I, hiding in the alley with Rian, watched Violet enter the shop.
âValenri Dress ShopâŠâ
Even I, who disliked getting dresses made, knew this place was famous.
âThe designer has great taste. Once you go, you canât stop coming back, or so they say.â
The fortunate thing was, this place wasnât exclusive to reservation-only clients.
Meaning I could observe Violet up close inside.
âButâŠâ
The problem was, once someone enters the shop, attendants would follow.
I saw several staff waiting beyond the window.
âThen weâll just have to act naturally so it doesnât look weird.â
I poked Rianâs side; he lowered his height to meet my eye level.
âHmm?â
âListen carefully, youngest. From now on, you and I are a newlywed couple.â
I said it without thinking.
âWhat else could work better than pretending to be a couple while sneaking in?â
But Rian seemed slightly surprised. He stared blankly without blinking, and only after 10 seconds did he draw a short breath.
ââŠCenter director.â
For some reason, his eyes narrowed.
âWhat is it?â
âThatâs what this is about?â
âWhat is?â
Rian didnât answer immediately, instead sending me a blatant gaze.
âIs he about to say another brilliant nonsense?â
I narrowed my eyes.
âSay it. Quickly.â
Then, suddenly, Rian pressed his hand against the wall and cornered me.
Startled, I hunched my shoulders.
âWhy⊠why are you doing this?â
âI had no idea. Really, none.â
Rian leaned closer, bringing his face near mine, and in this situation, whispered into my ear.
âI never knew the center director wanted to marry me.â
