Chapter : 09
The Incident Finally Breaks
âTa-da! Author Rina has arrived.â
Yoo Rina suddenly announced her own entrance as she stood in front of the elementary school gate.
For some reason, the moment she stepped through, she placed her hands on her hips and struck a proud pose.
âHuh?! Itâs Rina!â
âNo wayâmove! Iâm first today!â
Then suddenlyâ
a crowd of students rushed toward her and formed a line.
I had been walking her to school, but now I just stood there, completely confused.
âAuthor, how many today?â
Out of nowhere, a girl with black-rimmed glasses appeared beside Rina, acting like her assistant.
âTwenty. Make sure the notebooks come back by fifth period.â
Rina replied coolly, then pulled out a notebook from her bag.
ThatâsâŚ
I knew exactly what it was.
Lately, sheâd been using that notebook to practice drawing comics.
âEveryone line up properly! Only twenty people today!â
The âassistantâ counted the students and cut the line off at exactly twenty.
âAaah!! I was just next!â
âI really wanted to see it today!â
âCanât you add just three more?!â
The rejected students groaned in disappointment.
But Rina firmly shook her head.
Her assistant efficiently pushed them away.
ââŚRina? Can you explain whatâs going on?â
I couldnât make sense of it, so I asked directly.
âIâm currently serializing my comics at school. Honestly, business is too goodâthatâs the problem.â
âBusinessâŚ? What do you mean?â
âComic rental business.â
ââŚWhat are they paying you with?â
Clatter, clatterâ
I turned at the sound.
The assistant girl handed Rina a stuffed indoor-shoes bag.
Rina checked inside and nodded with satisfaction.
Whatâs in there?
I peeked.
It was full of PokĂŠmon stickers, trading cards, and toys.
âŚAt least itâs not money.
I had been worried she might be charging cash, but it seemed like a barter system among kids.
Still⌠sheâs really into comics these days.
She had been drawing nonstop lately.
Was she really serious about becoming a webtoon artist?
âDad, Iâm heading in now. Iâve got a deadline to meet this morning.â
âDeadline? Where did you even learn that word?â
ââŚSigh. I canât think of the plot for Dad Ranger Episode 5.â
This ten-year-old âauthorâ sighed like a real creator struggling with writerâs block.
âAnyway, Iâm going. You work hard too, Dad.â
ââŚYeah, okay.â
She waved without turning back and walked off coolly.
I just blinked as I watched her leave.
Why do I suddenly feel distance from my own daughter
It almost felt like she was glowing.
That glowâthe aura of someone overflowing with confidence.
It was so bright, I could barely look at her.
âOh? Rinaâs father?â
I was shielding my eyes from her âauraâ when Teacher Chae-eun approached.
ââŚWhat are you doing?â
She looked startled at my strange pose.
âAhânothing at all.â
I quickly straightened up, awkwardly fixing my clothes.
âIâve been seeing you often lately. You walk Rina to school almost every day, right?â
She smiled warmly.
âMaybe thatâs whyâRina has been much brighter at school. I think sheâs happy spending more time with you.â
âReally? I hadnât noticed.â
âItâs true. Every morning sheâs all smiles, and at the end of the day she rushes us, saying she needs to go home and play with her dad.â
Teacher Chae-eun chuckled softly.
I could easily imagine itâand found myself smiling too.
So it wasnât just my imaginationâŚ
Lately, Rina really had seemed happier.
She no longer complained about going to schoolâin fact, she looked forward to it.
And when I came home, she greeted me with such a bright expression.
I had thought it was just her personalityâ
but knowing it was because of me made me feel deeply happy.
I was proud⌠and grateful.
âOh, rightâhow was the art academy? Rina said itâs been about two weeks.â
She asked curiously.
Come to think of it, she was the one who recommended the academyâ
and I hadnât properly thanked her yet.
I quickly bowed my head.
âThanks to you, sheâs learning from a great teacher. I really appreciate it.â
âOh, I just recommended it! But thatâs wonderful! Her drawings are already improving so muchâitâs noticeable every day!â
She smiled brightly, as if it were her own family.
Seeing her smile, I was reminded of Rina.
They really do look alike when they smileâŚ
Kind, pure-heartedâjust like my daughter.
âI always feel this, but Iâm really grateful to you.â
âHuh? For what?â
âFor helping Rina so much. She always talks about youâwhat you did together, what you taught her. Honestly, she might be this bright because of you.â
Embarrassed, she covered her mouth, cheeks flushed.
âOh, no⌠I havenât done much. But thank you for saying that.â
It mightâve been awkward, but I had wanted to say it for a long time.
âBy the way, howâs work? I heard you joined a new programâmust be busy?â
âŚThat was a difficult question.
âAh⌠yeah, a bitâŚâ
âYou donât look so well. Is something wrong?â
âNo, Iâm fine!â
I forced a smile.
But inside, I flinched.
âŚThat hit too close.
The truth wasâ
it was already mid-October.
The day I had been dreading had finally come.
The incident⌠had happened.
* * *
âDid you hear about Yoon Ra-hee last night?â
âDrunk driving? Her top-star career is over.â
âWhat about her variety show? It hasnât even aired yet.â
âItâs done. Without her, the show had no appeal anyway.â
Whispers filled NBC as I walked through the halls.
Everyone was talking about it.
Yoon Ra-heeâs drunk driving scandalâ
the very thing I had feared.
Damn itâŚ
There was no way to stop it.
I didnât know the exact dateâ
and I couldnât follow her around every day warning her.
I had been living like I was holding a ticking bomb.
And nowâ
it had exploded.
I really donât want to go inâŚ
I stood outside our teamâs meeting room, hesitating.
Even before opening the door, I could feel the gloom.
Creakâ
The moment I stepped inside, it hit me harder.
The room felt like a funeral.
The main writer looked devastated.
Director Bong was practically crying.
The lead staff sat frozen.
Everyone else just watched silently.
ââŚHello.â
No one responded.
They all sat in silence, as if under dark clouds.
I tiptoed to a corner seat.
âEveryone.â
Just as I was about to sitâ
Director Bong spoke.
I froze mid-motion.
âI think weâre screwed. The department head⌠wants us upstairs.â
âŚI quietly stood back up.
Hands folded neatly in frontâ
I lowered my head like I was paying respects.
* * *
That evening, after workâ
I checked the group chat.
As expectedâ
the program was canceled.
âEveryone, thank you for your hard work. Letâs meet again somewhere betterâŚâ
Even from the wording, I could tellâ
Director Bong would be drowning in soju for a while.
But more importantlyâ
my future was uncertain.
I had only been on the team for a monthâ
and now I had to find another job.
I need to find something fast⌠Rinaâs academy feesâŚ
The only person I could think of was Hyung Gyeong-minâ
but he had just become a main writer and was extremely busy.
Why is it that whenever I need someone, theyâre unavailable?
Murphyâs Law really is real.
I stared at my contact list and sighed.
Who should I call?
What should I even say?
âŚStill, I have to. For my genius daughter.
Thinking of Rina, I forced a smile.
Even without money or a jobâ
just having her made me feel strong.
I scrolled again.
Who can I call right nowâ
Bzzzt!
My phone rang.
ââŚ?â
I looked at the screen.
