Chapter : 10
Happy Dad Ranger
After receiving a call from Ham Joo-young, I stopped by a gukbap restaurant near the broadcasting station.
He had suddenly contacted me, saying he had something to discuss and asked if I wanted to grab a bowl of gukbap. Since I was already passing by, I had no reason to refuse.
âSeong-woon! Over here!â
Joo-young waved from an outdoor table.
He had already set up two bowls of gukbap and a bottle of soju.
âI canât drink today. I promised Rina Iâd have dinner with her, so Iâll just eat and go.â
âReally? Thatâs a shame. I thought weâd finally have a drink together.â
âNext time, letâs plan it properly. So, why did you call me?â
I sat across from him and took a spoonful of gukbap to fill my empty stomach.
âYou got fired, right?â
âCough!!â
I spat out the soup I had just swallowed.
The restaurant lady passing by shot me an annoyed look.
ââŚWhen did you even hear that? Itâs only been 30 minutes.â
âYou know how fast news spreads at a broadcasting station. Three minutes is enough.â
I cleared my throat awkwardly.
âSo whatâdid you call just to mess with me?â
I glared at him.
But Joo-young simply smiled.
âI didnât call to tease you. I called to recruit you.â
ââŚWhat?â
âYou need money. You need work. I figured this was the perfect timing.â
He leaned down, rummaged through his bag, removed the soju bottle from the table, and replaced it with something elseâ
a thick stack of scripts.
âWhatâs this?â
âScripts from rookie writers I met at a workshop. They were hyped as some âlegendary class,â but honestly⌠none of them impressed me.â
He pointed his spoon at me.
âEver since I read your script.â
ââŚWhat are you talking about?â
âAfter reading your work, nothing else stands out. Thatâs why I calledâto bring you over.â
He smiled brightly, clearly trying to persuade me.
This guy really doesnât give upâŚ
Honestly, this wasnât surprising.
Ever since he read my script two weeks ago, heâd been persistently trying to recruit me.
No matter how firmly I refused, he always came back.
Still⌠Iâm grateful.
But I couldnât work with him.
Whether it was films or dramasâonce I got into writing, parenting would collapse.
That would make my life no different from before.
Thatâs why I even turned down Director Hwang in the first place.
At least until Rina reached high schoolâ
I planned to focus only on raising her.
âSorry, Joo-young. Like I said beforeââ
âYouâre going to refuse again? Because of Rina?â
He cut me off mid-sentence.
âI knew youâd say that. Thatâs why Iâm not done yet.â
ââŚ?â
He leaned forward across the table.
âIâll drop the idea of working directly with me. Insteadâhow about working with my company?â
ââŚYour company?â
He pulled out a business card and placed it in front of me.
[Studio Dream]
âŚThat place?
Studio Dreamâ
a major production company that had skyrocketed in less than ten years, producing hit dramas and films.
Even now it was rising fastâ
and three years later, it would become even more dominant.
âYou know them, right?â
âOf course. Anyone in this industry does. But why them?â
âWell⌠the CEO is my cousin.â
ââŚWhat?!â
I was startledâbut quickly understood.
His family had always been influential.
âI work there too. Soâhow about joining us?â
ââŚMe? At Studio Dream?â
âYeah. Writers like youâskilled and experiencedâare rare. Iâve already told them about you.â
He spoke with genuine confidence.
It reminded me of how I was treated after creating a blockbuster in my past life.
It felt⌠strange, yet good.
âThe contract will satisfy you. Weâre investing heavily right now.â
He gestured playfully, signaling money.
âWhat would I be doing?â
Unlike him, I was serious.
The offer was temptingâ
but depending on the workload, I might have to refuse.
For me, Rina came first.
âUsually you start by selecting works to acquire rights for, then gradually move up. Eventually, youâll write projects too.â
âSo Iâd still have to work on productions.â
âOf course. Youâre a writer.â
ââŚ.â
I hesitated.
Studio Dream had a bright future.
Financially, Iâd be secure.
But joining a production company meant heavier workâ
and less time for parenting.
âDonât tell me youâre still hesitating because of childcare?â
He looked at me.
I nodded awkwardly.
âI just think the workload might be too much. Even if the pay is good⌠I need to be home a lot.â
He frowned.
âCan I be honest?â
ââŚGo ahead.â
âTrying to be a full-time writer and a perfect parent⌠isnât that unrealistic?â
My eyelids twitched.
His words hit deep.
âYou can raise a child while writingâbut trying to do both perfectly? Thatâs too much.â
He continued.
âIâm not criticizing you. I know how hard youâve workedâyour writing proves it. I just want you to be rewarded for it.â
He sighed.
âŚI understood his intentions.
But this wasnât an easy decision.
âIâll think about it seriously.â
* * *
After returning home, I took a shower to clear my head.
Cold water helped calm my thoughts.
ââŚSigh.â
I sat at my desk, drying my hair.
My job was gone.
My old dreams resurfaced.
My emotions felt unstable.
That expression⌠Iâve never seen it on him before.
Joo-youngâs face lingered in my mindâ
full of passion and determination.
âDad! Dad! Itâs finally done!â
ââŚ?â
Rina burst into the room, breaking the silence.
âLook! Itâs finally finished!â
âWhat is?â
She handed me her notebook.
âDad Ranger Episode 5.â
Her eyes sparkled.
I couldnât help but smile.
So this is what she was so excited aboutâŚ
âThe writer will now review your work.â
âEhemâIâm confident.â
I patted her head and began reading.
As usual, it was about eight panels long.
âFirst, the length passes.â
âHehe, the story is even better.â
The first panel showed Dad Ranger rushing out on a mission.
Her drawing really is amazingâŚ
The second panelâ
his daughter Nari stopping him.
ââŚ?â
Something stood out.
Nari was wearing a party hat.
âItâs her birthday,â Rina explained.
Thatâs pretty detailedâŚ
Dad Ranger knelt, sweatingâfeeling guilty.
Thenâ
a line hit me.
âDad, are you happy when you save people?â
I froze.
In the next panel, he nodded.
Then Nari smiled.
âThen go. I like it most when youâre happy.â
âŚThat line struck me hard.
She wrote this?
It overlapped with my own situation.
In the final panelsâ
Dad Ranger flew off, crying.
Nari shouted:
âThen bring lots of presents!!â
Rina jumped into my arms, laughing.
I laughed too.
At her.
At this comic.
âHow did you even come up with this? You could really become a webtoon artist.â
âRight?! Iâm amazing!â
She beamed proudly.
I hugged her, praising every panel.
âDad.â
She suddenly looked up.
âDo you feel like this too?â
ââŚWhat?â
âLike Dad Rangerâdo you stay home because of me?â
âŚI froze.
ââŚNo. Not at all.â
I avoided her eyes.
âThatâs good. Because I like it most when youâre happy.â
âŚMy body stiffened.
âYou like it when Iâm happy?â
âOf course! I love you the most. So if you ever canât go out because of me, tell me. Iâll allow you to go.â
I burst out laughing.
âYouâll allow me?â
âYep! But you have to bring lots of presents!â
She spread her arms wide.
ââŚSeriously.â
In just that short momentâ
she turned my entire mood around.
The gloomy evening became a happy one.
I live because of you.
