Chapter – 04
Cold sweat ran down her back.
Seokjinâs expression looked as if he were toying with someone who had fallen into his test.
So what if an important man wanted to interview a potential bride? Why was he staring at her so viciously just because she mentioned it?
Damn it. If I knew this would happen, I shouldâve worn high heels even if they were uncomfortable.
Gaeun quickly searched her mind for something she could use as a weapon.
Ah. Her phone.
Worried it might get damaged, she had never removed the bumper case since buying itâbut now her hands moved faster than ever as she pulled it off.
âI didnât mean to do thatâŠâ
She raised her phone high, intending to smash it into his head and run away.
But before the corner of the phone could hit Seokjinâs head, he grabbed her wrist.
âWere you just trying to hit me?â
Honest as always, Gaeun nodded.
âWhy?â
ââŠBecause if I didnât, President Joo would probably get rid of me.â
âWhy would I get rid of you, Ms. Oh Gaeun?â
âYou were fishing for information earlier. Talking about bride interviews and all that.â
âWasnât it you who started talking without me saying anything?â
Now that she thought about it, he was right.
He hadnât said anything, and she had just blurted everything out herself.
Gaeun regretted her decision less than ten minutes after sitting in business class. If she had known Joo Seokjin would be here, she never would have taken a business class seat she couldnât normally afford.
First, she needed to convince him she could keep a secret.
âI really didnât tell anyone except you.â
âIâll believe you.â
âIâll take this secret to my grave, so please just leave me alone.â
âWho said anyone was going to touch you?â
âYouâre going to watch me in case I spread rumors and then get rid of me if I do something suspicious, right?â
Seokjin frowned slightly, looking puzzled.
âMs. Oh, you seem to enjoy wild fantasies.â
âFantasies?â
âIâm not that free to entertain your imagination.â
âWell⊠if thatâs true, then thank you.â
Embarrassed, Gaeun scratched her neck and avoided his gaze.
When she looked back later, he was already reading his newspaper again.
The plane had taken off. There was nowhere to run now. She had to sit next to him for a very long time.
It was an afternoon flight, so she wasnât sleepy. More than anything, the excitement of being in business class kept her eyes sparkling.
She tried to ignore him, but boredom kept drawing her gaze back.
He must be going to Bangkok for a business trip.
Then I win since Iâm going on vacation.
She suppressed giggles at her pointless sense of victory.
Seokjin noticed and turned his head.
âAh⊠I just felt like laughing. Looks like youâre going on a business trip.â
âIâm on vacation.â
Ah. A tie.
President Joo was on vacation too.
âMe too.â
Well⊠she had technically been on vacation ever since she met him.
Just as the conversation died into awkward silence, a flight attendant approached.
From the words beef and seafood meal, it seemed they were choosing their in-flight meals.
Gaeun lightly tapped Seokjinâs arm.
âWhat are you choosing?â
âIâll have the seafood.â
âThen could you tell them I want the beef?â
âIâll take two beef meals.â
At his words, Gaeun hurriedly raised her hand.
âExcuse me! Seafood meal please!â
The flight attendant smiled and said yes. Gaeun relaxed.
âI thought you said beef.â
âI only said that because you chose seafood. If you had picked beef, I wouldâve chosen fish.â
âWhy?â
âBecause this is business class!â
âAnd?â
He really didnât get it.
Since she was in business class, she wanted to try everythingâfood and drinks alike.
She especially wanted to photograph the different meals and keep the pictures.
So she could look at them later when she felt depressed.
âYou might not know this, but this is my first time ever flying business class. So I want to see, enjoy, and taste everything they offer.â
âGo ahead.â
âI have limits alone⊠so help me out a bit.â
âWhy should I?â
ââŠ.â
She had no answer.
He had no reason to help her.
Then she remembered what happened at the hotel lounge.
âAs payment for keeping your secret.â
âYou said youâd keep it.â
âI originally asked for 100,000 won, but you and your secretary only had 5,000. So if you help me try different meals and drinks, Iâll forgive the remaining 95,000.â
ââŠIf you want something, just call the flight attendant.â
âHow can I keep asking? Thatâs embarrassing.â
âNo need. Iâll just give you the 95,000.â
Seokjin sighed and reached for his wallet.
ââŠI left it.â
He muttered and reached into his bag instead.
Just to avoid ordering a few different drinks for her, he was trying to pay her off.
âOh?â
As he searched his bag, his face grew troubled.
âPlease give me the 95,000.â
Gaeun held out both hands.
Since he offered, there was no reason to refuse.
Especially since she was unemployed nowâevery bit of money mattered.
ââŠIâll help you.â
âIf youâd said that earlier, we wouldnât have had this awkwardness. Iâll order Chang beer, so you order Tiger beer.â
She nudged his side excitedly.
Surprisingly, Seokjin obediently called the flight attendant and ordered the beers.
Gaeun cracked open her can and took a refreshing sip.
âAhh! Arenât you drinking?â
âI donât really like alcohol.â
âAh, people like you probably drink wine. If I drink all this Iâll get drunk. Is it okay if I just sip a little?â
âDo as you wish.â
His face was cold, as if he didnât want to talk to an unemployed nobody like her.
âIâm just asking since itâs my first time in business class. You must fly like this often. Or do you only fly first class?â
âJust drink as much as you want.â
âAh yes. Thank you for your valuable guidance.â
She nodded awkwardly and picked up the other beer in front of him.
âWait.â
Seokjin suddenly took the can, wrapped the top with his handkerchief, and opened it.
Gaeun looked at him suspiciously.
âGo ahead.â
âWhy are you doing this?â
ââŠJust because I felt like it.â
He placed the opened can on her table.
She stared at it, swallowing nervously.
For some reason, it didnât feel like just beer anymore.
âI donât usually take things from other people.â
She pushed it back toward him.
Seeing his surprised reaction only strengthened her suspicion.
That handkerchief must have had something on it.
âDidnât you just ask for my help?â
âOh no, you donât need to. I realized I was being very rude to a stranger.â
âWeâre not strangers.â
âLetâs just mind our own business. I donât think we belong in the same space.â
âMay I ask why your attitude changed so drastically in under a minute?â
Why?
Because youâre suspicious.
Maybe I watch too many movies, but better safe than sorry.
âIâm just very fickle.â
âThis is troublesome.â
At his words, her imagination spiraled further.
Was he saying it wouldâve been easier if she had passed out from the beer?
âMy mind is too clear. Maybe I should spar at a Muay Thai gym after so long.â
âYou practice Muay Thai?â
âAh⊠just as a hobby.â
Muay Thai, my foot.
She realized survival made lying surprisingly easy.
âIâm actually going for a test to see if I can become a Muay Thai fighter.â
âThatâs strange.â
âWhat is?â
âI was told you donât exercise at all.â
âWhat?! You investigated me? Jushin Retail is really somethingâŠâ
âI needed to be sure youâd keep the secret. It canât get out that I held interviews to find a wife.â
âThen why do something you shouldnât and put me in this situation?â
She really didnât understand.
What could possibly be lacking in a man with his looks and wealth that he needed to interview women for marriage?
UnlessâŠ
Her eyes drifted toward his lap.
âThere are circumstances.â
ââŠMust be something you canât talk about. I understand. If you meet someone you truly love, even that defect can be overcome.â
âDefect?â
âMaybe you should rely on medical scienceâŠâ
âMs. Oh Gaeun.â
His cold voice made her flinch.
She realized she had crossed a line.
Should she apologize quickly?
âThat place you mentioned at the airport earlier⊠wherever it is⊠is very large.â
Very large?
Regardless of money, male pride was truly something else.
Wait⊠that means he overheard her at the airport.
Did he follow her from there?
Was this planned?
Strangely, there were no other business class passengers besides them.
ââŠ.â
âSo, may I ask you for a favor?â
