Chapter: 11
I froze on the spot.
Iâd been caught.
âI let my guard down because I thought it was all over!â
I never imagined Iâd run into him here like thisâŚ
âNo. Even if I had stayed alert, I still wouldâve been caught.â
The moment Cain opened the door, he spoke as if he had been waiting.
That meant he already knew I was inside the room.
I swallowed hard.
â…Greetings, Young Master.â
âI asked what youâre doing here.â
âI was just playing hide-and-seek for a momentâŚâ
âYou donât expect me to believe that, do you?â
âŚI wish he would.
I tried to brush it off naturally, but of course, that failed.
âWas he waiting to catch me in the act? I canât let him take the evidence.â
Thinking of the items in my pocket, I decided to tell the truth.
âI was falsely accused of using black magic, so I came to find proof that I didnâtâŚâ
But my voice gradually trailed off, and I couldnât finish the sentence properly.
It couldnât be helped.
How was I supposed to say, âI escaped from prison and broke into Tristanâs office because heâs the most suspicious oneâ?
There were limits to honesty.
âIt sounds way too suspicious! Even I wouldnât believe it!â
It wouldâve been better to come up with a more convincing excuse.
Sweat trickled down my back as my eyes darted around, searching for something to say. But instead of a lie, my mind only grew blanker.
âI see.â
Cain spoke then.
âSo? Did you find it?â
ââŚWhat?â
I blinked.
ââŚDid he just believe me?â
Tilting my head stiffly, I waited, and Cain explained as if answering my confusion.
âI heard from Rain. The one who used black magic wasnât you. A monster suddenly appeared in the corridor.â
â!â
Rain? AhâŚ
âSheâs safeâŚâ
I exhaled in relief, placing a hand over my chest.
I had purified her in a hurry back then, but it hadnât been enough. Iâd been worriedâbut it seemed the ducal household had handled the aftermath properly.
âShe said a few words and collapsed again.â
âŚMaybe not entirely.
Still, according to Cain, she survived. Considering how badly she had been contaminated, that alone was fortunate.
âAnyway, she canât testify to your innocence. Iâm the only one who heard her, and since she woke only briefly and spoke incoherently, this isnât enough to completely clear you.â
âI seeâŚâ
It was an awkward situation.
To hear Rainâs testimony, weâd have to wait until she regained consciousnessâbut there was no telling when that would be.
Would Tristan really leave me alone until then?
âAt least Cain seems to believe me.â
That was something.
But there was no guarantee he would continue to believe me.
âRain collapsed again, but that lying knight is perfectly fine.â
If that knight spun a convincing story later, Cain might change his mind.
âI canât let that happen.â
âYou asked if I found evidence earlier. Yes. I did.â
I took out the fountain pen from my pocket and held it out to Cain.
âPlease investigate this. It will reveal the real culprit.â
I explained about the traces of black magic.
âI need to earn more of Cainâs trust here.â
I had to act while he still believed me.
And conveniently, I needed someone who could commission a mage.
There was just one concern.
ââŚSo youâre saying Tristan might be the culprit?â
Cain looked down at Tristanâs name engraved on the fountain pen and asked a beat later.
I nodded slowly without speaking.
ââŚâŚâ
He fell silent.
This was the part that worried me.
If I explained everything, Tristan would inevitably come up.
âHe must be shocked. He trusted him for so long.â
Whatever the truth, outwardly Tristan had taken care of Cain in place of his parents. Cain believed that too.
He could easily accuse me of doubting Tristan without reason.
âMaybe I shouldâve said the pen belonged to Tristan but couldâve been used by someone elseâŚâ
No.
I steadied my wavering heart.
âEven if Tristan wasnât the one who used black magic, his wrongdoing still exists.â
The ugly rumors about Cain circulating within the ducal estate.
I was planning to leak them to the Duke.
âThen Cain will find out eventually. That Tristan isnât a good person.â
If that was the case, it was better to plant seeds of doubt now, little by little, when I had the chance.
I glanced at Cain.
ââŚRight. Weâll know for sure once the results come out.â
He slowly closed and opened his eyes, as if organizing his thoughts.
Since a third-party mage would confirm it, he couldnât dismiss it outright as a lie.
âYes. Then please.â
Feeling oddly guilty, I quickly changed the subject.
âAnyway, thatâs why I was here today. Iâd appreciate it if youâd pretend you didnât see me. I was only trying to clear my name.â
Yes, I had escaped prison and searched someone elseâs officeâbut still. It was investigative work.
ââŚFine.â
Cain looked at me as if I were ridiculous, then nodded.
âI wasnât trying to arrest you in the first place.â
Whew.
Strength drained from my body. At least the knights werenât about to storm in.
âNow I just need to wait for the pen to be examined and prove Iâm innocent!â
Just as relief settled inâ
âI was waiting to tell you to leave.â
ââŚWhat?â
The shocking words made me doubt my ears.
âDid he just tell me to leave?â
Suddenly?
When I stood there, stunned, Cain repeated himself.
âDisappear from the ducal estate.â
âWh-why?! I didnât use black magic!â
Iâd only just managed to clear things upâwhat was this out of nowhere?!
âAre you saying you wonât leave?â
âOf course I wonât!â
I pressed my back firmly against the wall, making my determination clear.
I still had so much to do here!
âIs it because you wonât be able to meet the Duke?â
Cain muttered as if he had expected that.
I stubbornly leaned even harder against the wall.
But his next words made my strength drain away instantly.
âIâll take responsibility for capturing the villainous organization you mentioned. On behalf of the Duke. So leave.â
âŚWhat?
***
Winielâs violet eyes shook violently.
âSo what was written on that paper was true.â
Her reaction, like someone struck at the core, confirmed Cainâs suspicion.
Several hours earlier, after receiving a report that Winiel had used black magic, Cain went to see Rain, who had collapsed after being attacked by a monster.
âIf she came to threaten the ducal house, wouldnât she have let me die back then?â
There were parts of Tristanâs and the knightâs testimony that didnât add up.
And just as Cain arrived, Rain regained consciousness.
âYoung MasterâŚâ
Cain froze for a moment.
He had come to examine Rain and look for anything strange. Noâsince she was awake, he should ask her something.
But seeing her struggling to breathe, he couldnât bring himself to speak.
Fortunately, Rain spoke first.
âLady Winiel⌠what happened to her? I think sheâs been falsely accused of using black magic⌠The monster appeared suddenly in the corridorâŚâ
Falsely accused?
Cain frowned.
As expected, something was wrong.
âRain wouldnât lie.â
She was the biggest victim, after all.
Then Rain continued.
âYoung Master, in my pocketâŚâ
But before she could finish, she lost consciousness again.
Cain hurriedly summoned the physician. Thankfully, Rain had only faintedâher life was not in danger.
âPocketâŚ?â
After finishing the examination, the physician glanced fearfully at Cain and quickly retreated.
Carefully, Cain searched Rainâs pocket.
ââŚ?â
Inside were nothing but torn scraps of paper.
