Chapter : 04
Thud.
As soon as I stepped out of Dukeâs professorâs office, a sigh escaped me.
âWhere did the possession boost goâŠ?â
Iâm not some genius with natural talent!
âHey, Russell.â
âHuh?â
A shadow fell in front of me. Three big guys were blocking my way.
Whatâs this? Are they resentful toward the original Russell Blair? Even if that were the case, it wouldnât be surprising at all.
They strode toward me and stopped right in front of me. Were they about to mug me? MaybeâŠ
âYou okay?â
Suddenly, one of them spoke in a soft voice.
âHuh?â
âYou⊠doing stuff you normally wouldnât. Why were you sitting next to that Plamel guy today?â
âYeah. You usually throw a fit about it.â
âAnd what happened to your arm?â
No tie, pants tighter than normalâa ridiculous sight. Anyone could tell, âIâm a delinquent student.â
These guys⊠seemed like they used to be my friends.
Russell BlairâŠ
I called the name that had become mine silently in my head. What kind of life have I been living?
At least the hair color is flashy, so itâs a small relief it wasnât dyed.
Just trivial thoughts like that kept running through my head.
âRussell, Iâm asking you.â
The one with a nametag reading âTomâ spoke first.
âDo you have any hard feelings toward us?â
ââŠHuh?â
âNo matter how much we think, we canât figure it out. If youâre upset, just say it.â
âHuh?â
âYeah. If we made a mistake, weâll apologize and fix it. Donât protest silently.â
What is this wholesome turn?
The mood suddenly felt like a youthful friendship drama. If this continues, Iâll just look like a sulking brat for no reason.
âNo⊠itâs not like that.â
âThen what is it?â
âWell⊠Iâm just trying to live properly. Study and all that.â
After I finished, a silence hung in the air. Then, suddenly, they all burst out laughing.
âHa! So youâve started joking now?â
âWow, âstudy and allâ? Hearing that from Russell Blair is hilarious.â
âI actually thought you were serious for a second.â
Then they casually threw an arm over my shoulder, changing the subject.
âSo, how did you hurt your arm? Did you actually meet a werewolf?â
âHa! You believe that rumor? Iâve been to Moonlight Forest as a punishment many times, never saw a werewolf.â
Lucky guy.
âOf course that coward Plamel picked a fight with you there, right?â
âWhat?â
Why is the conversation flowing like this? They all started chatting among themselves, leaving me out.
âShouldâve taken care of it beforehand.â
âJust stubborn as ever. Annoying guy.â
âIf we called him to the Lake of Silence at nightâŠâ
Ah. I remember.
Hearing the name Lake of Silence reminded me of the original story.
Right, thatâs it. Those guys who held a grudge over Russellâs death lured Plamel, and in some remote place, theyâŠ
Were killed by Plamel.
Right. In this novel, the protagonist has no mercy! Trucks of characters die.
âRussell, youâre going too, right?â
One of them suddenly asked, eyes fixed on me.
Iâm dead for sure. Absolutely dead!
If I went with them to the Lake of Silence now, the outcome would be obvious.
Swallowing.
Itâs always hard to say NO when everyone else says YES. But when your life is at stake, itâs a different story.
âNo.â
âAlright, so youâll be there at 9 then⊠wait, what?â
âI said Iâm not going.â
Saying it firmly again left them stunned. They hadnât expected it.
âYou guys should just study instead of wasting time because of me.â
Later, Iâll probably think studying was the easiest thing. Back in my dayâŠ
âWhat⊠what are you talking about? Why are you talking like a professorâŠâ
âYou were the one who said you wouldnât waste your youth at some magic tower!â
I donât care. I straightened my face and said it once more.
âAnyway, Iâm not going. Donât do anything foolish because of me.â
Tom, who seemed like the leader, stepped forward and glared down at me.
âYou⊠donât seem like the Russell Blair I know.â
Surprisingly sharp.
âHah. I thought you were talking nonsense earlier. Guess youâre serious. Trying to live properly again? Should we take care of it?â
His tone was disrespectful.
âFine. Letâs see if itâs really like that.â
Spit.
He spat near my shoes and brushed past me. The other two glared at me as they passed.
Phew. I was worried about getting beaten for rebelling. Guess itâs not that bad.
Facing delinquents is harsh for someone like me.
I hurried back to the dorm. As I turned the corner of the hallway, someone spoke.
âWhat are you thinking?â
ââŠLiz Camelot?â
A flash of blonde blocked my view. Liz crossed her arms, glaring at me.
âI thought youâd jump right into that foolish plan.â
ââŠ.â
âYouâre hiding something, arenât you?â
Did she find out?
Did she realize Iâm possessed?
âRussell, youâŠâ
Liz narrowed her eyes, sizing me up, then nodded slightly.
âYouâre using Plamel to avoid failing, right?â
âWhat?â
âPretending to be friendly, doing a group project with Plamel, who has no friends!â
She looked confident, as if there was no flaw in her logic. Seems her mind is full of grades.
âToo bad, but the top of our grade belongs to me, Liz Camelot. Donât even think about it. And you donât even have a contract yet!â
âAh⊠yesâŠâ
Not interested anyway.
âBy the way, whatâs the matter? You came to see me?â
âAh!â
Liz cleared her throat and glanced at me.
âJust came back from Professor Duke. And I heard you and Plamel really⊠met a werewolf.â
The tower hasnât officially announced it yet. But it wasnât a secret, so she probably heard it.
âHow did you manage it?â
Her eyes were serious.
âHow did you both survive after meeting a werewolf?â
I knew why she looked so desperate. Not in the early chapters Iâd read, but Iâd heard it from my younger sibling.
âBro, when Lizâs story comes up later, I swear Iâll tear up. When she was young, she faced a werewolf with her older sister, and her sister sacrificed herself to save Liz. Because of that, LizâŠ
Seeing someoneâs pain I had only read about come alive in front of me was strange. Knowing someone elseâs private story all alone was strange too.
âI distracted it, and Plamel distinguished the Sunshade Herb.â
I said it plainly, without any emotion.
âMy arm got messed up in the process, though.â
ââŠâ
âLucky. The kid was inexperienced at hunting.â
If it had been an adult werewolf, losing an arm wouldnât have been the end.
ââŠWas inexperienced,â Liz muttered. Likely recalling the past.
Sad, but I couldnât show I knew.
âAlright, thatâs enough. Iâm leaving.â
âWait!â
âWhat?â
As I was passing, Liz grabbed my sleeve.
ââŠBe careful.â
Then she turned and disappeared.
What? Ominous.
Feels like some kind of flagâŠ
Back in my dorm, I opened a sheet of parchment. I took my ink pen and roughly summarized the story I knew.
Title: No Country for Alchemists
- Genre: Fantasy
- Sub-genre: School, coming-of-age, overpowered protagonist, hidden-power story
- Plot: Plamel, hiding his contract nature, enters the magic tower and chaos ensues?
I put a question mark next to âslice-of-life.â
It felt cruel for a âslice-of-life.â Those unknown delinquents were supposed to be killed tonight, and I nearly died yesterday.
âAuthor, guarantee the lives of side charactersâŠ!â
Every time the protagonist moved, corpses of side characters piled up. Other students died, the protagonistâs gang survived.
âThe death flags arenât fully cleared yet⊠fixing this is urgent.â
I wrote âDeath Flagsâ as a subtitle and jotted down what I knew.
Death Flags
- Group project, 4 per team, midterm replacement? Monster appearance
- Assassin targeting the 3rd prince, time unknown
- Encounter revolutionaries outside?
- There might have been a stalker-type character for the protagonist
The results were grim.
I only vaguely remembered what my sibling had told me. Knowing the group project at least was a small mercy.
But one thing became clear.
âQuit school.â
Yes. This is a school story. Most events happen at the magic tower.
âAt least the chance of dying will drop!â
I couldnât turn my siblingâs birthday into a memorial day.
And Iâm a noble. I donât know exactly what the Blair Baron family does, but at least I wonât starve.
âAlright. Iâll submit my withdrawal tomorrow.â
Having a plan eased my mind. I was just about to go to bed whenâŠ
Huh? Whatâs this?
A letter had been slipped under my door.
“Come to the Lake of Silence at midnight. You know what will happen if you donât. Iâll be waiting, Russell Blair.”
ââŠ?â
Lake of Silence?
Wait. Wasnât this supposed to happen to Plamel? Why did I get it?
In the original, Tom and his gang, holding a grudge over Russellâs death, lured Plamel.
âDid Tom and his gangâs target⊠change from Plamel to me?â
You reed-like idiots. How can you just change a main event like this?!
Wait, is this an important event?
Yes. At the Lake of Silence, Tom and his gang get killed by Plamel, witnessed by the 3rd prince, who becomes interested in PlamelâŠ
âThis is a super important event!â
From the start, the original story is collapsing. Can I even do this?
Well, since Iâm alive, the original story is already broken. I donât have to follow it strictly.
But to survive here, the events need to flow according to what I know. Avoiding death flags yesterday was possible only because I knew the original.
âNo, itâs not too late. I just need to steer the story back on track!â
The key is that this event is the first connection between Plamel and the 3rd prince. The 3rd prince just needs to be interested in Plamel.
âI need to take Plamel to the Lake of Silence⊠wait, what time is it?!â
I glanced at the clock.
12:03 a.m.
Damn it⊠Iâm already late.
