Chapter 10
ââŚWhat?â
âTh-that kid⌠no⌠sob⌠I donât know who that person isâŚâ
Elkinas frowned and asked again.
His expression looked as if he had been caught off guardâclearly bewildered.
Zephyr, who had been sprawled on the floor behind us, also seemed surprised. He lifted his head and looked toward me.
ââŚYouâre not Arenne?â
âN-no⌠Iâm notâŚâ
âNotâŚâ My way of speaking sounded way too much like some groveling lackey.
But it was far too late to worry about things like my tone. If I had cared about that, I shouldnât have been crying and sniffling like a complete mess in the first place.
Sniff.
I sniffed againâwhether it was snot or tears, I couldnât tellâand fidgeted with my clasped hands.
Doing this somehow made me feel a little calmer.
Elkinas looked back and forth between my face and the hands I was nervously fiddling with, as if he couldnât believe what he was seeing.
Donât believe meâŚ? I said Iâm notâwhy do you keep askingâŚ?
So donât even think about testing me, got itâŚ?
I barely managed to suppress the urge to burst into loud sobs again. Trying to stop crying, I explained as gently as I could.
But my voice trembled uncontrollably with lingering sobs.
âI⌠Iâm absolutely not Arenne⌠I donât even know who that person isâŚâ
ââŚâŚâ
âI donât know who youâre looking for or what kind of conflict you had with them⌠but⌠I sincerely hope things can be resolved peacefully⌠sob⌠but I⌠Iâm really not that personâŚâ
I swallowed down another sob that rose up in my throat.
You already thought I wasnât her, right?
Then letâs just move on, Elkinas⌠Why do you keep askingâŚ?
Elkinas, who had been staring down at me with an unreadable gaze, finally spoke again.
ââŚThen who are you?â
ââŚSniff⌠What?â
âStop crying. Iâm askingâwho are you?â
Elkinas frowned deeply.
He looked somewhat angry, somewhat troubled⌠perhaps even deflated.
But one thing was certain: his tone had softened slightly compared to before. And there was no way I wouldnât notice the difference in Elkinasâs voice.
Instinctively, I realized something.
I had to handle this moment carefully. If I explained this wrong, I might die.
âI⌠I amâŚâ
My lips twisted as I forced the words out.
âIâm⌠his daughterâŚâ
Of all things, this was the one thing I didnât want to say. But tears kept falling as I continued.
There was no other choiceâŚ
âThis is the first time Iâve come out with my father for a recreational outingâŚâ
âYouâre Zephyrâs daughter⌠what?â
Elkinas looked at Zephyr and me alternately, utterly dumbfounded.
âI canât believe it. That bastard found a mate and even had a child? Whoâs the partner?â
âThe partner?â
âI mean your mother.â
âUhâŚâ
What should I say
If I said the World Tree, would Elkinas believe me?
Heâd probably react just like Zephyr earlierâsaying something like, âDidnât I just tell you? You couldnât even come up with a creative excuse?â
My mind was going blank.
I should come up with something⌠anything⌠but what?
âSh-she⌠lives in the forest⌠sheâs a⌠plant⌠plant personâŚâ
âWhat?â
âWhat? Hey!âugh!â
The moment I said it, both Elkinas and Zephyr spoke at the same time.
Zephyr even tried to correct me, desperately waving a hand from behindâbefore groaning in pain again.
Iâm really sorry, ZephyrâŚ
But that was the only thing I could think ofâŚ
Elkinas glanced at Zephyr briefly before turning his head back toward me.
ââŚWhat the hell does that even mean?â
Why do you keep asking
I had reached my limit.
My face crumpled again. I had cried so much already that I didnât even feel particularly sad anymore, yet tears kept flowing out of habit.
âTh-thatâs a little difficult to explain⌠sob⌠Do I really have to say itâŚ?â
Elkinas frowned again, looked at Zephyr, then back at me.
He seemed deeply confused.
ââŚA plant person⌠Even that damn lizard mustâve had some kind of storyâŚâ
ââŚâŚâ
What on earth is he thinking?
Should I correct him?
I hesitated, opening my mouth to say thatâs not itâ
âActuallyââ
âI understand.â
ââŚYes.â
âŚI shut my mouth.
I quietly nodded.
After all, Elkinas had just said he understood.
There didnât seem to be any need to contradict him now.
Sorry, Zephyr. I hope you understand.
When I glanced toward Zephyr after answering Elkinas, he was lying there with an arm draped across his forehead, body completely limp.
He looked like he had lost even the will to speak.
He looked far more wounded than before⌠and I was pretty sure it wasnât just my imagination.
Iâm really sorry, ZephyrâŚ
While I was apologizing desperately in my mindâ
Elkinas, who had been rubbing his forehead unconsciously while organizing his thoughts, looked at me again.
âWhy did you come here for your first outing?â
Because youâre my only childhood friend.
I wanted to see you.
And I was curious about the hatchling youâre raising.
They said it was dangerous. I thought maybe I should check it outâjust in case something happened, I could protect you.
That was what I had originally planned to say.
If I had introduced myself as Arenne and he recognized me, that was what I wanted to tell him confidently.
But⌠I couldnât say that anymore.
The words childhood friend could no longer be used.
After thinking about how to explain the situation indirectly, I finally spoke.
ââŚMy father said we needed to see the hatchling you have here.â
At the word hatchling, Elkinasâs eyes sharpened.
His shoulders stiffened, and his expression completely hardened.
Killing intent slowly began to rise again.
With a threatening look, Elkinas asked slowly:
ââŚWhy? It was expelled from the Dragon Territory. It has nothing to do with you anymore.â
Elkinas stared straight into my eyes as he spoke.
But compared to when he slammed Zephyr into the wall earlier, this was far less terrifying.
He was definitely easier to deal with now.
Just as I had feltâ
I had clearly passed the worst moment of danger.
Still, I couldnât let my guard down until the end.
Without breaking eye contact, I replied:
âButâŚâ
Just as I was about to continue, someone interrupted.
âEven so, it is still a child of Kunterne. We must see every possibility it might manifest as Kunterne. And we must confirm whether it is truly a dragon.â
It was Zephyr.
He was slowly standing up.
As if he had never been injured at all, Zephyr approached calmly and steadily.
While I had been buying time, he must have healed his broken spine.
His expression looked far better now.
Thank goodnessâŚ
âShow us your hatchling, warrior. We will not take your child away. But we may be able to tell you what is wrong. What we see could benefit you as well.â
Zephyr stepped between Elkinas and me, shielding me behind his back.
At that moment, Elkinasâs eyes narrowed slightly.
He looked displeased.
What should we do
Is he going to grab Zephyr by the neck and throw him again?
Ah⌠if I had known this would happen, I shouldâve stopped chatting with the World Tree and made contracts with the Spirit Kings earlier.
Back then I had been so happy just to be able to communicate with the World Tree that I completely forgot.
I never imagined Iâd regret it like this.
I grabbed Zephyrâs arm tightly and stared straight at Elkinas from behind him.
If Elkinas tried to grab Zephyrâs neck again, I was ready to latch onto his arm.
Elkinas stared at the arm I was holding.
Then he let out a quiet breath.
ââŚFine.â
He relaxed his shoulders, and the killing intent that filled the room disappeared instantly.
âConsidering what you did, I feel like tearing your face apart. But⌠fine. Youâre lucky today, you damn snake. The only reason youâre leaving here alive is because youâre not alone.â
ââŚAh.â
Zephyr sighed and nodded.
âI know. When I read the stars, they did say Iâd have good fortune with children. If I werenât here with my daughter, I wouldnât have come anywhere near this place.â
âYou talk too much. âŚFollow me.â
Elkinas turned his back and walked out of the room first.
He led us through the building for quite a while.
Calot walked beside him.
Normally the chief steward should lead the way, but since Elkinas was in front, Calot looked somewhat uncomfortable.
ââŚ.â
The scenery outside the window was changing.
It seemed we were leaving the main building.
When I looked outside with curiosity, Calot turned and quietly said:
âWe are heading to the East Wing.â
So the child wasnât being kept in the main building but somewhere far away?
Was the hatchling in such a dangerous condition that it had to be isolated?
While I was thinking about that, my eyes met Zephyrâs.
It wasnât a coincidence.
He had apparently been looking at me for quite some time.
Right⌠I did have something to apologize for.
I wet my lips with my tongue and spoke.
âZephyâ ah⌠Fa⌠father⌠are you alright?â
Oops. I shouldnât call him by name.
But when the word father slipped out naturally, Zephyr nodded.
âThanks to you, Iâm perfectly fine, my daughter. âŚBut be more careful when speaking about your mother.â
âIâm sorry.â
Even though he nodded, he still didnât seem fully over it.
At Zephyrâs expressionless reply, I apologized obediently.
After all, I had just turned the World Tree into a plant person.
Even with ten mouths, I wouldnât have a defense for that.
âWeâve arrived.â
The room glowed faintly with a blue light.
As Calot announced our arrival, Elkinas stepped forward without hesitation and opened the door.
