Chapter – 04
ââŠYour Highness, the Crown Prince.â
Roxisâs hand, which had been resting near my neck, slowly clenched into a fist and then fell back down.
Yet the hand that had been on my shoulder remained in place.
âNo matter that you are my concubineâs brother.â
Yulion approached, his face filled with displeasure. He glanced down at my shoulder, where Roxisâs hand had been resting.
âI am a jealous person.â
It was a tone I had never heard from him before.
Yulion gripped Roxisâs wrist tightly and applied force.
âSo I would prefer that the two of you refrain from physical contact in front of me.â
Slowly, Roxisâs hand slipped away from me. I inhaled deeply, freed from the pressure. The tingling that started in my shoulder ran down my spine.
âDo not misunderstand. We were only talking.â
âOh? You converse with your body, do you?â
Yulionâs golden eyes flicked to my shoulder, which had just been held. I couldnât see clearly, but there must have been a deep bluish bruise. Yulionâs expression grew even colder.
âThatâs just how siblings talk, Your Highness.â
Roxis, as if it were nothing, removed his hand from Yulionâs grip and smiled pleasantly.
âIâm relieved to see that my sister is receiving much love.â
âYou should watch your words carefully, Sir Roxis Kasyan.â
Yet Yulionâs intensity sharpened even more. He took my hand and pulled it toward himself.
âNow, you are not just my friendâs sisterâyou are the Crown Princess of the Empire.â
Roxis looked slowly between Yulion and me, then smiled faintly, placing a hand over his chest.
âIt seems Iâve made a mistake. I beg your forgiveness, Your Highness.â
He bowed, but Yulionâs gaze remained icy.
âA mistake?â
Yulionâs eyes, tinged with ridicule, landed on my shoulder.
âTitles may be mistaken, but this⊠this is not something that can be excused as a mere mistake.â
ââŠYour Highness.â
âThis matter will be formally addressed to Duke Kasyan.â
âYour Highness, thereâs been a misunderstandingââ
âYouâve raised a child poorly, Duke Kasyan. Only Roxis would dare continue to argue with the words of the Crown Prince.â
Only then did a deep look of despair cross Roxisâs face. His father, known for his extreme dislike of public embarrassment, would surely punish him harshly. Realizing the gravity of the situation, Roxis tried to speak again to smooth things over.
But Yulion would not allow it.
âOr perhapsâŠâ
His voice turned chilling. Even without weapons, it felt as if a blade was pointed at Roxis.
âDo you wish to receive immediate judgment here and now?â
It was a warning: continue and I will use force. Roxisâs fingertips trembled, but he forced a smile and bowed.
ââŠI apologize. I will withdraw.â
Only after Roxisâs navy-blue back disappeared from view did Yulion look toward me.
âAre you alright?â
âYes, I am.â
I reflexively covered my shoulder at his gaze.
âOf all things, I had to wear an off-shoulder dress.â
Since my shoulders were exposed, covering them with my palm did little. Yulionâs brows furrowed as he saw the red and purple bruises.
âYou should have called someone instead of dealing with this yourself. Why act foolishly?â
He paused mid-sentence, raking his hand through his hair in exasperation. His white forehead and furrowed brows gave off an annoyed tilt.
ââŠIâm sorry. Iâm not angry at you.â
âI was about to yell anyway. You just arrived a little too late.â
Yulion narrowed his eyes suspiciously. Fearing an awkward story might slip out, I quickly changed the subject.
âWeâll be late. Letâs go in first. Iâll fix my hair quickly.â
The perceptive Genid came close to me.
âThere is a powder room right next door, Your Highness.â
âGood. Letâs go quickly.â
I passed Yulion and headed toward the powder room with Genid. He seemed eager to say something but didnât hold me back.
âYour Highness, Iâm sorry.â
Genid looked distressed as soon as we arrived at the powder room.
âI should have acted more quickly.â
âItâs not your fault. But is there something to cover my shoulder?â
At the banquet, it would be obvious that something had happened. Headlines like âViolent Crown Princess in Scandalâ or âThe Crown Princeâs Secret Hobbyâ could sweep across the continent.
âHow about this?â
Genid brought a dark navy shawl. It seemed to match my light sky-blue dress well.
âLooks good. I donât need to redo my hair, right?â
âNo, just a little hereâŠâ
With practiced hands, Genid fixed the minor details and draped the shawl over me, his face once again wet with emotion.
âI really am fine. It doesnât hurt at all.â
âDonât lie. With bruises like these, it has to hurt.â
âHmmâŠthen just a little. Really.â
And it was trueâI hardly felt the pain. But Genid didnât know about my condition. I had hesitated to tell him and then missed the timing.
âBesides, it will heal anyway.â
Speaking would only cause unnecessary worry. I deliberately spoke cheerfully and stood up energetically.
âAll set? Letâs go. The main character canât be late.â
âYesâŠâ
Genidâs timid voice still carried guilt. I left the powder room without another word. But after only a few steps, I stopped again.
âYulion?â
He was leaning against the wall where the earlier confrontation had occurred. Seeing me, he straightened up.
âWhy arenât you going in?â
âI canât guarantee there wonât be another Roxis.â
For a moment, I was speechless. He must have waited for me in case of another potential danger.
Yulion cleared his throat and held out his hand.
âAnd it is a wedding banquet, after all. We should go together.â
Seeing his outstretched hand, I couldnât help but smile. Now I understood why people called Yulion the upright Crown Prince who cares for the weak.
âYour Highnesses, congratulations on your marriage.â
âThank you.â
At the banquet, my role was mostly ceremonial: sit in the designated seat, greet the nobles who came, and receive congratulations. Other nobles were busy chatting among themselves, mostly about meâor more precisely, about the Hemion incident earlier that morning.
âWas it Hemion Martin? I heard he was addicted to poisonâŠâ
âDid Your Highness have medical knowledge?â
âWell, I heard the rumors about making poison.â
âOh, so you could make an antidote too?â
Ridiculous stories circulated. They were all things I had secretly spread in the past, under the guise of studying medicine, because my father would have opposed wasting time otherwise. Claiming it was poison earned his reluctant support. Over time, support dwindled as my studies yielded little, but it had served its purpose.
âBut wasnât it kind of impressive?â
âWhat do you mean? You mean, Your Highness?â
âYes! My maid saw it up close and gave me a detailed accountâŠâ
One young lady started talking nearby. I wished they were farther away, out of earshot, but they were only a few steps away. Embarrassed, I averted my eyes, only to meet Yulionâs gaze.
âI was surprised too.â
Oh no. Yulion was ready to comment on the same topic. I tried to redirect my eyes as another noble approached.
âSorry Iâm late. Congratulations on your marriage.â
âNot late at all. Thank you, Count Retin.â
Count Retin seemed relieved that I didnât scold him as he expected. More nobles arrived in succession, allowing me to avoid Yulionâs piercing gaze.
âFather isnât here.â
My sisters and other Kasyan princesses had refused to participate as they didnât want to be bridesmaids. Duke Kasyan would normally attend both the ceremony and the banquet, but even as the event neared its end, he hadnât appeared. Roxis was likely running around trying to manage the Hemion situation.
âAt least the most important leverage is in my hands.â
Todayâs events had yielded an unexpected advantageâsomething useful for the future.
After the banquet, I sank into a preheated bath. Warm water enveloped me, making me feel dazed.
âYour Highness, Iâll sprinkle rose petals.â
âNo need.â
âBut itâs the first night!â
Genid excitedly scattered the petals into the tub. Whatever he imagined wouldnât happen, but I decided to enjoy the sweet atmosphere. After the fragrant bath and a massage, I finished.
My body now relaxed, I stepped out to see the Crown Princeâs attendants waiting.
âI will assist you, Your Highness.â
They draped a thin nightgown over me, light and fluttering, covering only the essentials, with the rest semi-transparent.
âIsnât there another outfit?â
It seemed this alone would be quite chilly. The attendant fixing my hair hesitated and asked,
âDo you have a preference?â
âNo, itâs just a little cold.â
The attendant tilted her head, confused, when suddenly:
âYour Highness, the Crown Prince is here.â
With the voice of the servants outside, the door opened. Yulion knocked lightly on the doorframe before entering.
âMay I come in?â
