Chapter 20
 (Accurate Meaning Preserved)
Yeonheeâs fingers, which had been tapping on her phone, suddenly stopped. Her mouth fell open as her gaze fixed on Cheonga.
âI think they used that to monitor all the professors in the hospital. Wow⊠this is huge.â
âWait a second, unni! Okay, fineâthe pharmaceutical company spreading bugs around, Iâll buy that. But just because Min Yushin recommended it to you doesnât automatically make him the culprit.â
At Yeonheeâs counterargument, Cheonga shook her head.
âItâs definitely not someone on our side. He kept attacking me even though he knew I was a cop.â
As she listened, Yeonheeâs expression gradually darkened.
âFor now, Yang Dongjun is just a front man. And⊠Min Yushin seems like he belongs to another faction thatâs at odds with Yang Dongjun.â
âSo, a rival organization?â
Tap, tapâCheonga drummed her fingers on the table, sinking into thought.
An organization capable of planting personnel inside a hospital⊠and preparing dozens, even hundreds, of ultra-small listening devices.
No matter how she looked at itâŠ
âDonât tell me⊠itâs really Yongyeonbang?â
Cheongaâs pale face turned stiff as she stared at Yeonhee.
After a moment of consideration, Yeonhee set Cheongaâs phone back down on the table and slid it toward her. The screen was filled with programming language Cheonga couldnât decipher.
âUnni⊠Iâm sorry to add more bad news, but I think Iâll need more time on this end too.â
It was unsettling that even Yeonhee was struggling.
She was known as one of the best hackers in the country. If even she was having trouble tracking them, it meant the opponentâs capabilities were far beyond expectations.
âSo⊠when that bug inside your stomach comes out, could you bring it to me?â
ââŠWhat?â
âIf we check whether the phone-tapping app and that device share the same creatorâs signature, we might find answers faster.â
Cheongaâs gaze slowly dropped to her own stomach.
How to retrieve the bugâŠ
There was only one way.
Go to the bathroom.
Omitted.
Rummage around.
âDo we⊠really need it?â
âIf possible.â
ââŠIâll try.â
Cheongaâs face turned bright red.
âWhyâs she like that?â
As Jeon Hongnam entered the office, his expression soured. Cheonga was slumped over the table in the center, looking utterly miserable.
Oh Seongmin shook his head with a grimace.
âSheâs been like that for days since we pulled out of Boksan University.â
âTsk. Weâre busy as hellâŠâ
Hongnam clicked his tongue and headed to his seat. From behind him, Cheongaâs muttering drifted over.
âC-pop⊠C-bab? C-bang? Ah, Iâm sure it was C-bang. C-va C-bangâŠ?â
âWhat?â
At the string of muttered profanity, Hongnamâs head snapped around sharply.
Oblivious to his rising anger, Cheonga continued talking to herself.
Oh Seongmin and Park Ingyu frantically rolled their eyes at her, signaling for her to shut upâbut Cheonga alone didnât notice.
âC-pa noona⊠C-bang⊠in the C-bang with noona?â
Finally losing patience, Hongnam roared loud enough to shake the office.
âHey!â
Cheonga jumped like a startled frog. Only then did she notice her team leader. Scratching the back of her head awkwardly, she greeted him.
âOh. Team Leader, youâre here.â
âIâve been here half the damn day, you punk!â
âOh. You came early.â
At her half-hearted response, a vein bulged on Hongnamâs forehead.
âYeah, I did. And while Iâve been here half the day, whatâs my subordinate doing? Glued to the table mumbling weird curses? I swear toââ
Cheonga pouted as if about to cry.
âTeam Leader, this is an important clue.â
Hongnam glared fiercelyâunfortunately, only Seongmin and Ingyu caught the murderous look.
âThe day I resigned from the hospital! I saw the druggiesâ names with my own eyes! On the treatment list!â
Jeon Hongnam crossed his thick arms.
âYou saw it?â
âYes!â
âThen give me the list.â
âWellâŠâ
Cheonga bit her lip.
âI searched through the trash to find it, okay? But⊠some lunatic stole it.â
ââŠâŠâ
That part was true.
When she woke up in the duty room, that crazy bastard Min Yushin had already run off with the list of drug users.
Of course, sheâd rushed to interrogate Yang Dongjun tooâbut all she got was shameless denial.
ââA patient treatment list? Donât be ridiculous. Thatâs information we wouldnât hand over even if the police brought a warrant! And some random cleaning lady thinks she can demand to see it? Are you insane?!ââ
Just remembering Yang Dongjunâs brazen words made her blood boil.
Seeing Cheongaâs crestfallen face, Hongnam clicked his tongue.
âWithout evidence, itâs as good as never having seen it. Since when does a cop run her mouth without proof?â
Evidence.
Unfortunately, there was none left.
All Cheonga had were fragments of a conversation between Min Yushin and Yang Dongjun, overheard beyond the tightly shut department door. And even that she hadnât heard clearly.
Sure, she could storm into Boksan University Hospital right now and demand the medical records.
But word that the police were investigating would spread instantlyâand the tail would definitely be cut off.
âThereâs no evidence⊠but.â
What remained in Cheongaâs memory was this:
âTeam Leader. What do you think C-pop C-bang means? I think the answerâs there.â
ââŠâŠâ
âWas it C-pa and I misheard it? Sspa-ssi-bbang? Hehe. Ugh, this is driving me crazy. Itâs important information.â
At the string of innocent yet vulgar-sounding syllables spilling from her mouth, Hongnamâs lips trembled. His forearms bulged as he tightened his crossed arms.
Before things exploded, Oh Seongmin jumped in.
âAh, Team Leader. Didnât you say youâre reporting to headquarters tomorrow?â
Hongnamâs fierce gaze shifted to him.
âJeez, relax your eyes! âŠYouâre gonna give someone a heart attack.â
âWhat report?â
âThat case Violent Crimes Team 1 is eyeing. You know.â
âThose sneaky bastards from Team 1 are after something again?!â
Seongminâs tactic worked.
In an instant, Hongnamâs anger shifted from Cheonga to Team 1.
Taking the opportunity, Seongmin signaled behind his back to Park Ingyu to remove Cheonga from the premises.
Finally catching on, Ingyu jumped up and grabbed Cheongaâs wrist.
âLooks like itâs already time for our Cheongaâs walk. Letâs go. Big brother will take you for a walk.â
âHuh? Iâm going for a walk?â
âField questioning. Weâre checking the scene. Didnât those Russian ladies get into a fight with a customer yesterday? Letâs go confirm.â
Ingyu dragged her toward the office exit.
âNo, hyung, this is importantâC-pop, ack!â
As she tried to say âC-popâ again, Ingyu clamped his hand over her mouth and forced a smile while hauling her out.
âYeah, yeah. Letâs go meet the Sspa-ssiva unnies.â
Dragged by the arm and scruff of her neck, Cheonga was practically shoved into the car. Ingyu let out a dry laugh at her gloomy expression.
âYou lost the evidence. What are you sulking for?â
He fastened her seatbelt and started the engine. The seat rattled with a loud vibration.
âAnd watch your mouth in the office. Youâre usually so sharpâhow do you not notice when Team Leader switches into goblin mode?â
ââŠâŠâ
âAt the very least, if youâre going to say something, you should explain the context. Where did âC-popâ come from? In what situation did you hear it?â
After hesitating, Cheonga fidgeted with her phone and glanced around the car. Then she lifted herself from her seat and leaned toward Ingyuâs ear.
âHyung.â
The sudden closeness made the tips of Ingyuâs ears turn bright red.
âI actually found two suspicious people at the hospital.â
âHuh? Then why didnât you report it?â
With a sigh, Cheonga leaned back into her seat.
âLike the Team Leader said, I need evidence to file a report. One of them ran off, and the treatment list I secured got stolen.â
ââŠâŠâ
Tap, tapâshe tapped her head.
âAll Iâve got left in here is âC-pop C-bang.â How am I supposed to write a report with that?â
Ingyu nodded slowly.
âOn top of that, Iâm being wiretapped.â
His nod froze mid-motion.
ââŠDid you seriously eat something weird?â
