Chapter 21
My mother always resented my biological father, who vanished one day without a word.
But wasnât that too naĂŻve of her?
âMore likely than that, itâs the Emperor who schemed to take her for himself.â
Like⊠maybe he killed Cardinal Heather and hid the body so no one could find it.
The Emperor is the kind of man whoâd do anything to get what he wants.
ââŠBut thatâs not the most important thing right now.â
More than the identity of the father Iâve never even seen, itâs far more important to understand the origin of my power.
The more I listen to Hist, the more the puzzle pieces fall into place.
âA child of God killed by the Emperorâs hand.â
That probably never happened in the original story.
In the original version, Mother never even ran away from the capital to escape the Emperor.
Her diary says my biological father helped her escapeâbut again, thatâs different from the original.
âHave the gods been keeping an eye on me all this timeâbecause Iâm the product of events that never existed in the original story?â
It wouldnât be strange if that were the reason they gave me such immense power.
Ever since I began seeing spirits, Iâve always wondered where my strength came from.
I just didnât have any way to find outâor the environment to even try. So I ignored it.
âEven this encounter with Hist today⊠is it the will of the gods?â
For a brief second, I had a rare moment of fatalismâbut I quickly dismissed it.
Whatever the case, I have a goal to accomplish. Thatâs more important than anything else.
âHow are you feeling, Princess Neroli?â
Histâs voice pulled me from my deep thoughts.
Still smiling with interest, he rested his chin in his hand and watched me.
âGot your thoughts sorted out?â
âMore or less.â
âArenât you curious why Iâm telling you all of this?â
âNot really.â
At my flat answer, Hist blinked in surprise.
âHuh? Really?â
âItâs obvious. Youâre going to ask me to come with you to the Pope.â
Judging by how gently he spoke when he mentioned the Pope, it seemed they were still in contact.
Besides, the current Pope had no successor.
âHeâs probably trying to lure me to the Vatican one way or another.â
Since the Emperor hates the Dahlia Church, the Pope canât enter the Empire.
When I said this, Hist stared at me dumbfoundedâthen burst into laughter.
âHahaha! Wow, Princess! Why donât you leave the palace and open a detective agency with me? It would be so fun!â
âDonât be ridiculous.â
I replied coolly, tilting my head.
âWas that why you were interested in me from the start? Because you knew I was a child of God?â
He grinned slyly at my question.
âHmmm~. It wouldnât be fun if I told you everything at once, would it? Iâll tell you that next time.â
âYou really think weâll get a next time?â
âOf course. I believe it without a doubt!â
Leaning toward me, he made a confident proposal.
âPrincess, how about I make a suggestion to help us grow even closer?â
âWere we ever close to begin with?â
âI only drop honorifics with people I consider close, you know.â
âYou almost spoke informally with the Emperor too.â
âOh? So youâve been paying close attention to me. Thatâs a good sign.â
âYou really donât make any sense.â
With a playful smile, Hist snapped his fingers.
Suddenly, a small orb appeared in front of me.
âWhatâs this?â
I frowned slightly as something flickered inside the orbâand then it started to take human form.
I couldnât help but jump to my feet when I saw who it was.
âMorrenâŠ!â
Reflected inside the orb was a dim room.
My younger sibling Morren was lying helplessly on the bed in a room I knew all too well.
The sight made me clench my fists instinctively.
That helpless figure overlapped too much with my mother.
I tore my gaze away from Morren and glared at Hist.
Meeting my eyes, Hist quickly spoke.
âDonât misunderstandâI donât have a hobby of spying on people.â
âThen how do you explain this? Is that really Morren right now?â
âWell⊠actually, I was assigned a mission by our Vice Tower Master.â
Hist avoided my gaze and gestured to the orb.
âTo check if there was anyone in the Imperial Palace with potential for the Mage Tower~ I used this magical energy detection spell I specially developed!â
âSo youâre trying to recruit talent. Using unauthorized magic the palace hasnât approved.â
âItâs not stealingâitâs more like⊠persuading~. And this magic? Well, letâs just say itâs the palaceâs fault for failing to block me.â
Oh, but donât worry! The Princessâs palace seems impenetrable, probably thanks to the spirits!
Hist laughed as he said that.
âHow is that reassuring?â
I looked at him coldlyâthen suddenly, a thought struck me and my eyes widened.
âMorren has a talent for magic, doesnât he?â
Thatâs the only explanation for why he showed up in that suspicious orb.
When I muttered that, Hist snapped his fingers with a cheerful grin.
âCorrect! Ding ding!â
My motherâs sideâthe Miban familyâwas a traditional line of mages.
But there hadnât been a proper mage in generations, so the lineage had mostly been forgotten.
âBut Morren inherited that bloodline.â
And from Lord Lornodâs side, Morren inherited a body of unmatched strength.
With proper training, Morren could become a powerful mage.
âThere was no mention of this in Motherâs diary, so I never suspected it!â
As my eyes sparkled with excitement, the surrounding spirits cheered along.
[Hmm! A true child of our masterâs bloodline!]
[Magic~ What a fun power~.]
[I donât get it, but Masterâs happy, so Iâm happy too! Yay!]
âSo your proposal isâŠâ
âI want to take your younger sibling as my apprentice. You know being taught by me is an incredible opportunity, right?â
âThe disciple of the Tower MasterâŠ!â
âIf needed, our Mage Tower can even become a cozy refuge.â
âIs that true?â
That was a significant offer.
If Morren ever couldnât stay in the palaceâŠ
It meant the Mage Tower would take him in.
âThat would secure his future.â
With the power of the Mage Tower, even the Empire would struggle to interfere.
In some ways, it was the most ideal proposal for Morren.
âAs long as heâs safe, even if everything else goes wrongâŠâ
I quickly assessed the situation and stared into Histâs violet eyes.
âItâs suspicious how all his proposals benefit me, though.â
Whether he knew what I was thinking or not, Hist puffed out his chest proudly.
âSo? Iâm worth getting closer to, right?â
âNo one is kind without wanting something. If youâre offering to protect Morren, that means you want to make me the Pope, right?â
At that, his expression turned more serious.
âIt wouldnât be bad for you, either. Word is you donât get along well with the Crown Prince.â
ââŠâ
âTo escape the next man in power, thereâs nothing safer than the Popeâs position. Iâm offering a deal that guarantees your safety.â
That made me laugh bitterly.
âMy safety, huhâŠâ
If I could truly run away without guilt, I wouldâve made plans a long time ago.
But I couldnât leave the palace.
âNot until Iâve avenged my mother.â
I could still picture the crown of flowers I never got to give her.
If I ignored her death, Iâd live the rest of my life haunted by guilt.
I never trusted gods much anyway, so being Pope didnât appeal to me.
âMost of all, I protect myself.â
Didnât the prophecy say so?
That I would not be the one to leave the palaceâbut Gobard would.
âIâm not the kind of coward who throws away a winning hand.â
Still, the offer was too valuable to turn down outrightâsince it concerned Morrenâs safety.
So I made a counter-offer to Hist.
âHow do you plan to make a kid who wonât leave his room become your disciple? Get Morren to come out voluntarily. If you can prove your skills, then⊠I might agree to meet the Pope once.â
âThatâs a pretty one-sided deal for you, isnât it?â
To that, I smiled sweetly.
âI only get close to people who are good for me.â
He blinked at me for a momentâthen broke into a broad grin, showing perfect teeth.
âDonât go back on your word, Princess.â
I glanced at Modway.
âModway, can you keep an eye on him?â
[Okay!]
Modway eagerly flew toward Hist.
[Iâll watch this bad man closely! If he does anything mean to Masterâs sibling, Iâll punish him right away!]
As Modway circled above, Hist laughed brightly.
âOh, is this spirit so I wonât feel lonely? Iâm a little touched.â
I was already used to his nonsenseâso I answered with a smile.
âThen make sure you repay me, Hist Netern.â
âŠBecause Iâm starting to expect something from you.
âŠâŠâŠ
âPrincess Neroli, a letter has arrived!â
âAh, thank you!â
I smiled brightly as I received the envelope from Agatha.
Agatha smiled softly too.
These past few days, her expression had brightened again, as if sheâd found peace.
âShe must have full faith in Gobardâs promise.â
Breaking off an engagement⊠a broken engagement, huh.
Leisurely, I opened the envelope and began reading the letter inside.
The more I read⊠the more I couldnât help but smile.
