Chapter 10
Letâs Date
At the sudden mention of same-sex relationships, Zipfel glared at me as if telling me to cut the nonsense.
âHave you lost your mind?â
I turned my head again and looked at my hand.
Like pencil marks smudged across paper, faint traces of blood stained my fingers.
âNo. I just think Iâd be more helpful to the Admiral than Sir Zipfel.â
âWhatâ!â
Mm, that irritated tone. Refreshing.
Since I couldnât scratch his throat the same way, I figured Iâd at least get on his nerves.
âZipfel. Thatâs enough.â
ââŚ.â
With just a glance, the Admiral dismissed Zipfel and rose from the sofa.
I tensed up a little inside, but I didnât show it as I looked at him.
But when he leaned over the table toward me, I couldnât help but flinch.
âW-whyâŚâ
Because of his height and large frame, his shadow completely enveloped me.
âSo, how exactly do you plan to be of help to me, Lady?â
I couldnât answer right away and just blinked.
The Admiral was holding out a handkerchief.
More precisely, he had been about to place it directly against my neck before lowering his arm and handing it to me instead.
ââŚYou have quite a talent for being intimidatingly kind.â
âMy apologies.â
His deep, resonant voice lingered briefly in my ears before fading.
After giving me the handkerchief, he straightened up again. Even without any particular intent, his gaze carried the pressure of a predator.
I couldnât help but reconsider whether the idea I had come up with was truly wise.
But in the end, I swallowed a sigh and spoke.
âMore people will keep approaching you in the future. Mostly women, Iâd say.â
The silk handkerchief was clean and smelled nice. It didnât sting at all when it touched the wound.
âAmong them, some will try to engineer physical contact with youâjust like the examples I mentioned.â
The Admiral frowned slightly, and I also scrunched my face as I continued with a smile.
âBut from what I see, it wonât be easy for you to tell whether those situations are genuine or not. Even if you can, itâll be extremely troublesome.â
He was meticulous about security, sureâbut in that area, he seemed rather naĂŻve.
âEven if you realize their intentions arenât pure, as someone whoâs ingrained with the duty of protecting civilians, itâll be difficult for you to stop someone from throwing themselves down the stairs, wonât it?â
âThey would go that far?â
In a K-romance fantasy setting? Easily.
âYou seem like the kind of person who would never ignore someone in dangerâunless theyâre an enemy.â
He didnât deny it. Looks like my interpretation wasnât wrong.
I smiled confidently at the Admiral, who had his fingers interlaced.
âI can block all of that for you.â
âAnd how exactly would you do that?â
âI have a perfect method. Though it requires a great sacrifice on my partâand your cooperation.â
I could feel Zipfelâs gaze from behind, as if questioning what nonsense I was spouting, but I ignored it.
âThat sounds like it requires some explanation.â
âYes. First, I need to stay near you!â
After all, itâs not like I can become a sniper and eliminate suspicious individuals remotely.
I placed the handkerchief on the table and stood up from the sofa.
Then, stepping onto the finely woven carpet, I continued,
âUntil now, youâve avoided all private approaches from others.â
As expected, Zipfelâs expression didnât look too pleased.
âBut if Iâm going to drive people away from you, then you have to allow my approach.â
Both Zipfel and the Admiral looked displeased.
But would they still think that after hearing this?
I cleared my throat and suddenly raised my voice in a rough tone.
âAhem! Make way! The Admiral is passing! Hey, you thereâmove your face aside!â
ââŚâŚâ
âThatâs not what you want, is it?â
ââŚObviously.â
It was a bit funny how both of them blinked at me, but I held it in.
âFrom my perspective, if I go around openly showing my intentions like that, Iâll be nothing more than your bodyguard. And then I wonât be able to properly block people from approaching you.â
Zipfel shot me a glare. What, embarrassed you got surprised?
I gave him a smug smile before turning back to the Admiral.
âSo, there needs to be a valid reason for you to tolerate my presence.â
âAnd that reason is?â
The Admiral lifted his chin slightly.
I kindly explained.
âWell, itâs not like I can join the navy without attending the academy. So letâs think about this logically.â
ClapâI brought my hands together and asked,
âWhatâs the most plausible reason for me to drive away those who approach youâespecially women?â
The Admiral didnât seem to have an immediate answer.
Then Iâll provide one.
âThe answer is: because I have feelings for you.â
Admiral, even if you frown, youâre still handsomeâbut do you know how that looks from my perspective?
Honestly, Iâm completely fine. Just thinking youâre good-looking.
Smiling brightly, I continued,
âThen! Why would you let me chase away other women without stopping me?â
Again, no one answered.
But it didnât seem like they didnât knowâit felt more like they didnât want to know.
Unfortunately, thereâs only one truth!
âBecause you also have âfeelingsâ for me, Admiral.â
The corner of the Admiralâs eye twitched.
âAdmiral?â
ââŚâŚâ
âNow you see why I said it requires my great sacrifice and your cooperation.â
Zipfel muttered something about it being the opposite, but I ignored him.
Hmm, maybe I should make it look proper.
I took a bouquet of dried red hydrangeas from the silver vase.
Then I walked up to the Admiral and dropped to one knee.
Of course, I only knelt for momentum.
âAdmiral Richard Aquilus!â
Holding out the dripping bouquet, I beamed.
Then, looking at his slightly pale face, I said,
âLetâs date.â
You get dragged into a tigerâs den and canât find a way out?
Then just settle down and live there.
Letâs see who leaves first.
âŚThatâs how boldly I confessed, butâ
The Admiral gave no answer. No expression either. It felt like Iâd walked into a museum.
âAh, cold.â
If it werenât for the water dripping from the bouquet onto my foot, I mightâve wondered if I had gained the ability to stop time.
âMy arm hurts, and my legâs going numb, Admiral.â
Only then did he slowly blink.
And then he reached out to take the flowersâ
âIf you take this, weâre dating.â
âand withdrew his hand.
âIs that a rejection?â
âFirst, stand up.â
âIâm up. So, your answer?â
âSoldiers and merchants arenât that different. Both pursue efficiency and profit.â
Maybe itâs because he controls maritime trade? That was surprisingly flexible thinking.
And hearing it from a face sculpted like a collaboration between Michelangelo and Da Vinciâit almost sounded like a historic quote.
Should I carve it onto the table beside us?
Besides, he wasnât wrong.
âThen you accept!â
At my cheerful response, the Admiral frowned.
Wow, the statue can frown too.
âDating you would be a loss.â
âWell, youâd lose some popularity, so thatâs not entirely wrong.â
âHave you already forgotten everything you just said?â
Like an AI assistant spouting nonsense, the Admiral looked at me with strained patience.
âYou said it yourselfâwhat matters to people is the existence of exceptions.â
âIâm glad we understand each other.â
When I smiled brightly, he returned a hollow smile.
âIs that so? That makes me sad.â
âIf thatâs your preference, Iâll respect it.â
With that face, even if he claimed to be saddened by mutual understanding, Iâd let it slide.
But apparently not. His elegant jaw tightened.
âStop twisting my words, Lady. What I mean is that the moment we become lovers, a private exception is created.â
He explained calmly, like stating that one plus one equals two.
Of course, one plus one equals two.
âThatâs right. I know.â
âThen why make such a proposal?â
He looked at me as if asking whether I didnât realize that private exceptions would create far more problems than public ones.
âWellâŚâ
Sometimes one plus one becomes something cute.
âA single private exception will eliminate all other exceptions.â
âAre you relying on the authority of House Labius? Donât get your hopes up. Your reputation in the South is already at rock bottom.â
Right. Iâve confirmed that twice myself.
âOr is that calm expression because you truly donât understand? If you stay by my side, the number of people approaching me will only increase.â
âThey wonât be able to.â
âThen what exactly are you relying onââ
âMy reputation.â
The Admiralâs gaze paused briefly on my lips.
I stepped back with a bright smile and lifted my chin to meet his eyes.
âMy terrible reputation will protect you from people trying to approach you.â
