~Chapter 103~Â
âSo, you donât think sheâs the real culprit, then?â
âShe might be. Or not. Either way⊠someoneâs pulling the strings. Iâll know more once I speak with her directly.â
The investigator nodded and left.
Cedric was convinced that the servantâs wife had acted under pressureâforced into a false confession.
âAnd the one who forced her hand⊠thatâs the real thief. The one who stole my fatherâs brooch.â
He suspected Albert. Of course he did. But suspicion alone wasnât enough. He needed a witness. Proof. Something to corner Albert so tightly that even he couldnât wriggle free.
Just as Cedric was formulating his next move, eyes sharp with calculated coldnessâ
Knock knock knock.
The knock came faster than usual, louder too.
âYou mayââ
He didnât even finish when the door flew open.
Edgar burst in, wild-eyed, out of breath.
âYou will not believe what happened last night!â
ââŠWow.â
Cedric finished his sentence with a flat tone, while Edgar paced the office like a man possessed, gasping in disbelief.
âWow⊠holy hell⊠I mean⊠I canât evenâŠâ
âEdgar, focus.â
âNo, listenâonce you hear what I have to say, youâll be like this too!â
âThen say it.â
Cedric moved away from his desk and silently sank onto the sofa at the large table. He crossed his legs in that irritably elegant way of his while Edgar practically flopped into the seat across from him, eyes wide with something between wonder and madness.
âLong story short? I didnât recover the brooch.â
As the head of Cloud investigationâCedricâs closest friend and his eyes in the shadowsâEdgar had entered the Angelique party. But heâd come back empty-handed.
ââŠSo now Iâm supposed to wander the room like a lunatic in disbelief?â
âActually, you might not need to.â
âAre you in love with mysteries lately? Just say what you mean.â
Cedricâs patience was slipping, but Edgar was trying not to laugh, his nostrils flaring.
âAlbert really did use your fatherâs brooch as the prize in that disgusting little event.â
âAnd you find that funny?â
âNo! Thatâs not it. Itâs just⊠it got snatched in the most breathtaking wayâby a woman.â
âA woman?â
Edgar nodded and launched into the full story.
How the event worked. How the mysterious woman had distracted the crowd. How she moved like lightning, reaching into Madam Rominasâ imposing cleavage and pulling out the brooch before anyone could react. And then? She made her exitâgraceful, confident, and swift.
It was a tale worthy of conspiracyâif Cedric hadnât been the one personally humiliated by it.
But Cedricâs face didnât soften in the slightest.
âEdgar Dawson.â
âHuh?â
âYouâd better not be about to say you donât know who that woman was. Iâm not in a particularly patient mood.â
That cold, cutting tone wiped the grin clean off Edgarâs face. He straightened up.
Cedric rarely lost composureâbut when it came to matters involving his father, he allowed no cracks in his armor.
âI do know who she is,â Edgar admitted, scratching his cheek.
âWho?â
ââŠDonât get too mad.â
Cedricâs expression began to freeze over like stoneâjust before Edgar finally cooperated, with a sheepish smile.
âIt was Miss Harriet Listerwell.â
A long pause.
ââŠWhat?â
âYou heard me. The same Harriet Listerwell you know.â
Cedricâs faceânormally unreadableâtwisted with raw, visible shock.
Even when heâd heard his father had died on the battlefield, he hadnât looked this stunned.
âSheâhow did she even know about that place?!â
âThat part, I havenât figured out yet. Might need to press her personally for an answer.â
Cedric shot up, pacing the room now, just as Edgar had done earlier.
Watching him, Edgar couldnât help but smirk.
âTold you. Now youâre as shaken as I was.â
But Cedric didnât have the luxury of treating this lightly.
After a few turns around the room, he turned sharply to Edgar.
âDid she⊠did she take the Angelique drug?â
âShe didnât behave like she was out of it. But she definitely had the welcome drink. Everyone did. Thereâs no skipping it.â
âThat stuff has drugs in it!â
âTrace amounts. I drank it too. It barely does anything.â
âBut you canât predict the side effects! The dosage doesnât matter!â
ââŠIâd appreciate it if you remembered your friend right here drank it too.â
Cedric ignored him, folding his arms tightly and resuming his pacing.
And Edgar hadnât even told him the worst yet.
âShe almost got raped by some pig of a man on that ship. Thatâs probably the bigger problem.â
âWhat?!â
Cedricâs face darkened beyond even the anger heâd shown over the brooch.
âYou know what goes on there. Some idiot thought she was just another guest and tried to force himself on her. Luckily, she handled it.â
âAnd you just watched this happen?â
âI was ready to intervene, okay? It didnât escalate. Relax.â
âYou call that relaxing?!â
Cedric bit down on his words, fists clenched at his sides.
As he tried to calm down, Edgar began reporting the rest of what he had learned.
Finally, Cedric spoke again, quieter nowâbut no less intense.
âWhat was her goal?â
âYou mean Harriet? I donât know. But sheâll probably return the brooch to you.â
âDoubt it. And even if she does, sheâll want something in exchange.â
âStill better than letting Albert profit from it, isnât it?â
Cedric didnât reply.
His silence stretched on, so Edgar stood and stretched, ready to head out.
âIâm off to get some sleep. Call if you need more info. Just⊠give me three hours, yeah?â
Still no response.
Edgar patted his friendâs shoulder and left.
Cedric didnât move. Didnât even blink.
âSheâs insane.â
He repeated it like a mantra.
âSheâs completely mad. I always suspected she wasnât normalâbut this? She actually enjoys this kind of reckless game? If thatâs how she does business, I need to rethink everything about investing in her.â
He was furious. Noâbeyond furious.
The only thing he was grateful for was that sheâd gotten off the ship safely.
But if she hadnât?
If sheâd failed, what consequences would that have brought him?
âEven Albert, as stupid as he is, wouldnât have trouble kidnapping a woman on his own ship. And then what? Use her life to blackmail me? How would I have said no?â
The logic was tangled. He knew that. He was running hot, thinking emotionally.
But stillâhis head wouldnât cool down.
Edgarâs last update rang in his ears.
âAlbert got suspicious and approached her. But her ‘partner’ escorted her off the ship safely.â
âHer partner?â
âTez Roark. Didnât even bother hiding it. His mask was barely hiding anything.â
The man Harriet had met at the Laurel event. Tez Roark.
Sheâd defended him then tooâthough Cedric couldnât quite remember what sheâd said.
Feeling suffocated, Cedric opened the window and took several deep breaths of the cool morning air.
âHarriet Listerwell⊠what were you thinking? Going there, of all places. With Tez Roark, no less. Did you go to⊠enjoy yourself?â
Noâshe couldnât have known the brooch would show up. That part was probably just dumb luck.
Or maybe⊠she had taken the drug, and her judgment was blurred?
Which meantâŠ
Did she really go home with Tez Roark?
Or had they ended up somewhereâŠÂ together?
âDamn it!â
Cedric clutched his head with both hands, scrubbing through his hair.
His perfectly styled hair fell out of placeâbut he didnât care.
What did his appearance matter right now?
He didnât even know what she was doing.
And thenâanother knock at the door.
âWho is it?â
